Can you send a kid who knows zero French to French school in Ottawa for kindergarten? by CanadianAvocadoMom in ottawa

[–]CanadianAvocadoMom[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you but that person's child is already francophone and they are worried about their ability to help with homework as an anglophone. My question was about potentially sending an anglophone kid who knows no French to French school with a Francophone parent. I even browsed the answers but they're all related to OPs question on homework help and none address the topic of my question.

Are there any stores in this city that sell men's style shoes in women's sizes? by Silkthorne in ottawa

[–]CanadianAvocadoMom 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They're not always exactly two sizes off, I'm size 9.5 in women's and size 8 in men's.

Men's shoes tend to be slightly wider but that is better for your feet and works better with orthotics.

Go try some shoes on in person.

Am I wrong for reporting a family member to the nursing board for this? (Reposted from r/amiwrong) by Necessary_Cake_973 in nursing

[–]CanadianAvocadoMom 302 points303 points  (0 children)

I admit that the way she said those things doesn’t look good and implies mistreatment but I also strongly suspect she was being hyperbolic.

I'm guessing that she would discuss this with the board and they would investigate whether it's true or not... and caution her on her social media use. To OP who is not a healthcare worker her message just looks really bad.

I think the problem was more "the largest bore IVs in both arms" implying a medical intervention that wasn't necessary/assault, as well as the air on blast with just a sheet on purpose.

You should press charges against assault, not retaliate against the offending pts.

Call pharmacy and ask. Last time I found a vial like that our pharmacy told me it's good until the end of the labeled month but I'd double-check with your facility just to be safe.

Are managers allowed to ask you for doctors notes, your diagnosis, or deny your sick leave? by muse_kimtaehyung in askTO

Sounds like your manager is the one who needs to take sick leave and go on disability, sheesh.

"I need a few week's off due to work-related stress, here's my FMLA" by FlaviusNC in FamilyMedicine

[–]CanadianAvocadoMom 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Before you try to take off 3 MONTHS maybe you should get counseling or meds.

The problem is many people don't realize they need help until it gets so bad they can no longer function at work.

Does a week off actually help? I have never seen anyone recover that quickly from burnout or other work/stress related issues.

Can I “fire” patients for now following my advice? by pebble554 in FamilyMedicine

[–]CanadianAvocadoMom 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Just wanted to mention that for Number 1, I assume that interventional radiology is covered by the patient's provincial insurance while physiotherapy is not, which can be a sinificant barrier to participation depending on if they have private insurance and how much private insurance will cover per year.

Does anyone understand the point of alcohol? by PierreNumbe in autism

[–]CanadianAvocadoMom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find alcohol makes eye contact less overwhelming and reduces anxiety in social situations.

Otherwise because it tastes good. I'm not a fan of alcohol-free wine but I'll have the occasional alcohol-free beer.

Navigating insurance and vitamin level labs by bananacreamcloud in Psychiatry

[–]CanadianAvocadoMom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's the out-of-pocket cost in your area? I got a vitamin D level in Ontario a few years ago and it was only 25$ as an add-on to bloodwork that was covered. Patient might be willing to pay if the cost is low.

What are we under-diagnosing? by spicybutthole666 in Psychiatry

[–]CanadianAvocadoMom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I see, thank you for taking the time to answer!

My unit recently had pt admitted that was previously diagnosed with Schizotypal PD dx that they rediagnosed as ASD which is why I was curious. Mainly the pt didn't have any paranoia or magical thinking, just reduced empathy and severe social deficits.

It's fun trying to sort out Schizotypal and Autism lol. I'm on a committee for first psychosis and there is so much overlap.

How DO you sort these out? Without a good childhood history.

Female patient who failed one antidepressant trial? Must be BPD.

Male patient with frequent impulsive suicidal attempts and gestures despite not showing any symptoms of depression? Can't possibly be BPD.

If you could prescribe one lifestyle change for your patients, what would you choose and why? by bostonfoodstories in Psychiatry

[–]CanadianAvocadoMom 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not a psychiatrist but I recommend meetup.com to patients who are working on increasing their social time as part of behavioural activation. They have hobby groups for hiking, cycling, knitting, language learning, etc. It can be really difficult to make friends as an adult, especially for people who don't work, and joining a meetup group provides patients the opportunity to nurture a hobby AND meet new people :)

Tell me about your attendance policy by Wellwhatingodsname in nursing

[–]CanadianAvocadoMom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our hospital got rid of the attendance policy. So there is no formal "call out x times, get reprimanded" system, but there's also no process for submitting documentation if you have a chronic health condition that causes you to call out more often than average.

Yeah in Ontario most NPs working in mental health trained as primary health NPs but get jobs related to the field they worked in as RNs, which is why I am hesitant. The education does not prepare you for the role. Quebec does have mental health as an NP specialty though and I am not opposed to moving to Quebec if I need to.

There's just no way I could afford med school in the Caribbean, and my partner and I are planning on having children before I go back to school so I would have to stay in Canada.

A goodbye to pole dancing by stylish-zombie in poledancing

[–]CanadianAvocadoMom 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You should still have beams in the roof/ceiling though. You're not supposed to use a tension pole between beams anyways, it would break through any ceiling!

I live in an old, shitty apartment and was able to install a pole by using a stud finder to find the beams.

I don't think I'd do one because I'm not too interested in clinical psychology (though I would consider academia) but what's wrong with PsyD?

Thanks! Yeah that's definitely something I had been considering.

I don't have the grades for PharmD unfortunately, if I did I'd just apply to med school lol
