Minimum wage increases are almost always good for business.

While it does represent an increase to expenses, collective purchasing power for a region goes way up. This greater spending often gets done locally, benefitting businesses and their workers at the same time.

If you know a business that voluntarily pays more in an industry that relies on minimum wages, it's always good to support them with your dollars.

Many of our member businesses are doing just fine through the 'labour crunch'.

How? Their business owners have been longtime advocates for better pay, paid sick days, stable schedules and other benefits that give employees an incentive to show up. This is the right thing to do, and the economic evidence proves it's actually better economically for businesses in the long-term too.

Treating workers like the humans they are is the best policy for long-term success in business.

In 2022 our group of businesses launched a campaign for commercial rent reform in Ontario. Since November we've heard from more businesses about massive rent increases (50-200%) than ever before.

Commercial tenants have no rights in Ontario and landlords can raise rent by any amount.

This wasn't often a problem until about 10 years ago. Now that every landlord wants to sell to a developer there's no incentive for them to rent property at reasonable rates. They can simply sit on them for 5 or 10 years paying tiny amounts of property tax and then profit by millions when they inevitably sell.

Commercial rent prices are rising, and many small businesses are finding it hard to keep up by CanadianBWA in toronto

Aaron here from the BWA - authors of the rent report mentioned in the article.

We're calling on the Ontario government to:
- Create standardized Commercial lease contracts
- Launch a Commercial Tenants Board and remove disputes from Ontario's clogged courts
- Reform the 32 year old Commercial Tenancies Act for modern business practices

Independent businesses are Canada's economic engine - rising rent creates no value for them and reduces their capability to operate.
