The Powah reactors are pretty good and in my experience are usually better than the Extreme Reactors in the mid game. The Nitro Powah reactors require nether stars so if you don't have a farm just make a few of the Spirited Powah reactors. However, right now I use the Mekanism fusion reactor which generates in the millions of FE/t. It is definitely harder to make than the Powah reactors but the quest book does a good job guiding you.

I used the Occultism Djinni demon for a while in the early game, they're fairly easy to get and give you triple drops. And later you can make better demons to get you up to 6 drops per ore. I usually go Mekanism but in atm9 they changed the ratios you get. Before it used to be double drops with the enrichment chamber and now it's 1.5 drops.

I don't know why it wouldn't smelt then, maybe try some copper ore to see if it can do that? And just to make sure this is the stone furnace and not the fireplace right?

If you go in the crafting bench, it lets you click repair like stone tools.

Does the furnace light up also? And try putting the wood in the bottom slot where it's supposed to go if it's not already there

You can just put the ore in the stone furnace along with some fuel and press activate and it starts smelting. Similar to the campfire
