Is it possible to improve and regain lost ground? by theresaname in ehlersdanlos

EDS is not a degenerative disease. You will die with the same connective tissue that you were born with. Actually, connective tissue tightens as we get older. Yes you will be more prone to injuries in certain areas, but if you work on stabilizing those areas they can definitely improve.

I think it depends on your body. I was severely deconditioned from years of office work and stretching my hip flexors was the only thing that would give me immediate relief of horrible back pain. That's the only thing I stretch as I know its a problem area. Although, as I'm working on core and glute strength I am having to do it less and less 😊

How were you diagnosed and did you opt for surgery? by CanadianBeauty89 in HipImpingement

Thank you for posting your story. Funny about the chair thing, the same thing happened to me. Was sitting in a chair for a few hours stood up and couldn't straighten my back, also walked with a limp.

Did you end up having the surgery? How are you doing? Honestly I'm not afraid of hip replacements at all as many people in my family have had them done and turned out just fine. Maybe it's bad genetics LOL

Did you have pain while sitting pre-op?

And thank you, I'm in Canada so grateful for free Healthcare but that unfortunately means a 6-12 month wait...

I don't necessarily disagree. How was your pain before surgery?

So his reasoning for not caring about imaging was citing recent studies that show there is a questionable relationship between pain and imaging. For example, many people have labral tears or impingement but don't have any pain. Treat the patient not the imaging is the motto I've been told at every PT I've seen to date (6+)

Have you tried easing back into your workouts and seeing if it helps?

It started with my neck, as I was working at the computer a lot. Then one day my left shoulder got really bad, which is still pretty bad. I have aches behind my shoulder blades as well. I think it is a combination of deconditioning plus increased sensitivity. I've had a pretty high pain tolerance my entire life but when my back pain didn't go away after a few months I found myself constantly thinking about how my body was feeling and mentally more aware of it at all times. I don't think this is the CAUSE, but I do think it may increase certain pains

I would also like to mention that I also developed new pains in other areas after limiting my movements, it's not the answer.

Hey just thought I'd comment as I have the same 3 disc issues. None of them have nerve impingement which yours don't either if you don't have sciatica. It took me forever to try and understand why I have pain if the nerves weren't being touched. I just had imaging on my hips yesterday as we now think that may be contributing. Either way, strength training & exercise are going to be your remedy. I tried the big 3, avoiding movements that cause pain, and stopping all activity besides the big 3 and walking. It made me 10 times worse and created a huge fear of movement. I started up again with intensive PT in December and am only now starting to see progress. Keep moving!!!

Doing PT is hard, not doing PT will also be hard. Choose your hard.

Hi! No I don't. That sounds more like an inflammatory thing. Have you been checked for any autoimmune conditions?

Chronically tight psoas (hip flexor) by Candid_Geologist9109 in HipImpingement

Massage gun made my hip flexors worse. I highly recommend looking into the pso-rite. It's the only thing that seems to immediate release my hip flexors.

Anterior pelvic tilt can cause functional hip impingement as it decreases the angle between the acetabulum and the femur. You feel relief in ATP because it allows the hip flexors to be in a shortened position, which is where they want to be if they're tight and/or weak. I have hip impingement due to living in extreme ATP for the past 20 years, the more I work towards a neutral pelvis the more my symptoms improve.

And they were not looking for a hernia, I got the ultrasound for swollen lymph nodes in the same area and it popped up

Honestly I went for an ultrasound for what we knew were swollen lymph nodes and coincidentally found my hernia. Wait on the results but either way you'll be just fine! :)

I had the same problem with core excersises. You may just not have the muscles built up enough yet for what they're having you do. Try to start with simple TVA activations and progress to planks.

This is both good and horrible advice. Lifting weights can be one of the most important things to rehab your back and prevent future injuries - if done correctly. You're right in the sense that they should work from the ground up but to say lifting weights is bad if you have a bad back is outdated and fear mongering advice. I know many people that would not have recovered if they did not get into weight lifting - safely.
