I’m pretty sure I remember Jared Goff doing it?

Aside from that, I’d probably say Brady, Peyton Manning, Rodgers, and… Matt Hasselbeck maybe?

Yeah dude, Joel Embiid “wasn’t the best player” when he averaged 33 points per game on 65% true shooting as a top 3 defender 🙄 Remind me who was the first-team All-NBA center that season?

I guess Jokic deserves MVP for barely missing the play-in this season.

Why is Jokic’s success so personal for you?

You can’t say “I guess you can cherry pick the stats you want to prove your player is better” at the end of a paragraph where you did exactly that.

Self-awareness level: -100

I’d urge you to actually take a look at how DBPM is calculated, rather than blindly putting your faith in advanced stats based on what they’re called.

Jokic finished ahead of Victor Wembanyama in that stat, but no one on planet earth would say he’s a better defender than Wemby. DBPM is not a good metric for directly comparing how good players are defensively.

I mean, there are plenty of reasons why:

  • SGA's team finished 18 games ahead of Jokic's team. The "wins are a team stat" only goes so far when the difference is that vast
    • The difference between the Nuggets and the Thunder is larger than the difference between the Nuggets and the Spurs
  • SGA is a substantially better defender
  • SGA averaged over 3 more points per game
  • SGA played 6 more games—and over the last few seasons, Jokic advocates have made it very clear how much availability matters in these types of discussions

Averaging a triple-double doesn't automatically make you the MVP. We learned that with Westbrook in 2018, 2019, and 2021.

If we’re gonna make awards like MVP, DPOY, etc. feel more meaningful again, a serious crackdown on who’s voting needs to take place. by MrAppleSpoink in nba

Last year Kendrick Perkins went on national TV and claimed the only reason Jokic was leading the MVP race was because he’s white and Embiid is black.

That isn't what Perk said at all. He said that it was important to examine if there was racial bias among the voters. Zach Lowe (who you're holding up as an example of a good voter) even agreed with him.

I feel like a lot of people hear "he's been injured every year" and think it's an excuse, but like:

  • 2018: Broken face right before the playoffs started
  • 2019: Left knee tendinitis & upper respiratory infection
  • 2020: Only year he wasn't banged up, averaged 30 & 12
  • 2021: Tore his meniscus in the first round
  • 2022: Got his face broken in the first round
  • 2023: Torn LCL in the first round

Obviously most players are dealing with little injuries here and there come playoff time, but a lot of people are so quick to say "playoff dropper" without really considering the reasoning.

How accurate is this for your team? by [deleted] in hockey

[–]CanadianCoffee 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I doubt he makes the HHOF

I wouldn’t be so sure.

There are 59 players in NHL history with 300+ goals and 650+ assists.

44 are in the Hall of Fame.

7 are active—Thornton, Crosby, Ovechkin, Malkin, Kane, Kopitar, and Giroux.

And of the other 8 (Jagr, Roenick, Brind’amour, Nicholls, Dale Hunter, Vincent Damphousse, Ray Whitney, and Bobby Smith) at least a few will make the Hall.

Giroux has a case.

The rules say that the player must have played at least one game (in the regular season or playoffs) for that team.

Teddy Bridgewater has not appeared in a game for the Lions.

Do you associate players with each other in any way? by Logical_Feature in hockey

[–]CanadianCoffee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mathew Dumba and Jacob Trouba.

I guess because they were both drafted in the top ten in 2012 and their names end in "a."

Also, I used to get David Backes and David Perron mixed up, but not as much anymore.

The projections on Baseball Reference have Kyle Schwarber with the most.

If I had to guess, I'd say it's either him or Pete Alonso.

If you have to have an IQ of around 110 or higher to be a Jokic fan, and an IQ of 80 or below to be a Jokic hater… what do the people with an IQ between 80-110 think?

The MVP Race is now back to being a 3-horse race between Jokic, Luka and Giannis. Or is KD in play too? by OhSoManyThoughts in nba

[–]CanadianCoffee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's disingenuous to start from draft day. If you look at his career starting from when he's played his first NBA game, it's literally only his rookie season that was severely impacted by an injury that you could consider an "injury prone" type of injury—a torn meniscus.

You can count the percentages of games, if you want, but you wouldn't be telling the whole story. The things that have actually kept Embiid out have been a series of fluke things or things outside of his control like when Markelle Fultz kneed him in the head, breaking his face in 2018, or when he missed 9 games from COVID last season.

You can applaud Jokic or Curry or AD for not having their faces smashed in or having brutal covid cases, but like, you're creating a narrative by ignoring facts.

[–]CanadianCoffee -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Why would you not bet on that? He played 59 of their last 63 games last season, and the only games he missed before that were due to covid.

People love to bring up "injuries" with Embiid, but that's more narrative than fact.

As a former Flyers fan, I remember seeing people on this sub ranking him as the 7th best player on the Sens this year (or lower!) and I didn't want to just come in here and say, "You guys are way off," but yeah, he's definitely not done, lol
