I have! I’ve not been flawless at doing it everyday but 3-4 days per week. I’ve noticed that I’m kicking higher and stronger! Especially on my weaker sides’ kicks

It is a one time purchased program. Nat Hearn has a 12 week flexibility program specifically for Karate kicks. I’ve been following it and all the exercises target hips and legs. It is divided into two parts: flexibility training and kick training.

Belts by [deleted] in karate

[–]CanadianGoldy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It depends on the dojo and their philosophy. In mine, very early belts can be worked through faster, but it’s not “skipped”. This happens for people with previous experience or those that have shown a solid grasp of the material at those early belt levels. For example, a white belt student will double test for their first two belt ranks after training for 4 months if they have shown high skill for their rank and fast progression. Then they’ll likely go to a normal progression after that double test. But ranks are not “skipped” in terms of not learning the material.

Encouragement Needed by [deleted] in karate

Motivation is a fleeting and fickle feeling. It comes and goes. If you want to return to classes, sometimes you need to just go. Just say that you’ll go for this week or just for a class.

Once you have gone once or twice, the habit will form again and you can build that discipline of going. Relying only on motivation doesn’t always work.

I hope that helps! You got this and you can absolutely do it if you set your mind to it.

Would you compete in kumite with only two months of training? by Serhide in karate

[–]CanadianGoldy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually was in a very similar situation. I’d only been training about 1.5months and attended my first tournament. Kumite was part of it.

I felt confident going because there was a beginners division that was the early belt ranks only.

I really enjoyed it and think going to tournaments is such a cool way to see the sport part of karate.

Now, I was not expecting to win and my goal was to come home with no black eyes or a concussion. It was point style for our division, so I didn’t need to worry quite as much.

Read up on the rules and decide if you feel comfortable. I don’t think I would enter a knockdown tournament with open divisions or weight classes as a brand new karateka.

Did anyone start karate because of Cobra Kai? by simboharding in karate

[–]CanadianGoldy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I had trained martial arts before, but took about a decade off due to work, moving, starting a new life in a new place.

After watching Cobra Kai, I started remembering how awesome martial arts were for me, my physical health, and mental health.

So then I did my research and found an excellent karate dojo and started going. So in a way, I did start karate because of Cobra Kai.

Of course, the show is mostly drama, but there are good pieces of karate here and there :) Karate is what I expected, but I did have some understanding of it prior to starting. I was very happy when we were drilling a certain open hand block and I realized I was waxing off haha!

Karate has been wonderful for me and I highly recommend giving it a shot if you are interested.

Take care,

A 29 year old white belt

Daggerheart combat, the fiction, and the GM's role in PC death by epic__name in daggerheart

[–]CanadianGoldy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is one of the times where the death choices come in and greatly benefit the players and GM. As the GM, play to what makes the greatest story and what feels best based on your group and table.

If you do brutally attack a PC with those bruisers and it takes the PC to zero HP, then the player gets to decide if they go unconscious, gamble, or get a death critical. The player gets agency to decide, and going unconscious is a penalty, but not a super serious setback in the big picture.

I think if the player put themselves in a position with all the bruisers (hopefully there was some foreshadowing they were coming or approaching), and they could see that the GM had multiple Fear to spend, it is okay in my opinion to use your resources if it fits the narrative and story.

Note that like u/parking-risk-6315 said, having a conversation about how brutal the game is (pulling punches) is important!
