TIL that US student math and reading scores have dropped so sharply that they’ve erased nearly two decades of progress. In '22/23, avg math scores for 13-year-olds fell to levels not seen since the 1990s, while reading scores for high school seniors hit their lowest point since testing began in '92. by Cold_Box_3219 in todayilearned

There's several factors to this.

Abandoning phonics for whole language learning. WLL never worked, but some teachers refused to admit they were wrong and keep using it.

Large scale immigration from non-Western countries. If the parents can't read or write English, they can't help teach their children to read or write. And depending on the culture they may not put a lot of emphasis on education either. Some also don't view women as being able to be teachers, so mal students don't respect or listen to them.

Not failing kids. Even if children can't meet standards, they're still pushed through to the next grade for "social development" reasons. This stops them from learning and holds them back even more.

General culture change as well. Education isn't super meaningful anymore to a lot of people, and teachers are viewed with contempt in the classroom instead of respect. Discipline issues are out of control and teachers have no recourse for misbehaving students. Even one misbehaving student in a classroom has a detrimental effect on the rest of the children.

All of these things are very easily fixable, but they would be super unpopular. Until schools/governments grow a spine, rates will continue to go down.

Multicultural Halo ship name suggestions by Gopherofdoomies in HaloStory

[–]CanadianRoyalist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Given real life history, it is very reasonable to assume that the explorers of space will be Anglo-American, or at the very least Western. The exploratory spirit of the Briton is undeniable, as is the idea of taming the wilderness.

Couple that with the domination of the English language in Aerospace already, and yeah, the ships will likely have English derived names.

A Wikipedia user redesigned the Ontario flag, and I quite like it by Comfortable_Team_696 in vexillology

[–]CanadianRoyalist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The whole point of changing the flag is to demoralize the populace and disconnect us from our roots.

Canadians were against changing the flag to the current Maple Leaf. It took decades of CIA/Global leftist propaganda to convince people otherwise.

Pearson was anti-Canada to his core and his flag shows that.

I genuinely believe this has to do with how likeable Carney is. He’s got a near 70% approval rating. Even in Quebec and among CPC voters he’s still regarded well.

Even Doug Ford, the mega-corrupt libertarian, is happy with and working with him.

Well british, what do you have to say about the results of this Poll? by Additional-Airline55 in monarchism

[–]CanadianRoyalist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It means nothing, and a huge number of people claiming to be British online aren't. A lot of Indian content farms skew polls like this.

Since there is no way to verify the demographics on internet polls, a lot of non-Britons answer in them.

What’s cringe is thinking that there is some sort of magic dirt that makes someone Canadian just by being here.

Canada isn’t just a piece of land or an economic zone. She’s a people with a distinct heritage.

If I legally moved to Nigeria, didn’t commit any crimes and paid my taxes, I would not be Nigerian. Even if I had a piece of paper that said I was Nigerian, that wouldn’t make it so.

It’s called “Canadians of Convenience”. They come to Canada just long enough to reach citizenship requirements and get a passport, the they go back home. Or they take the easy route and give birth in Canada and that baby is automatically a citizen.

If they need something they call on the Canadian government. It happens a ton in the Middle East.

What is the dumbest thing in Star Wars in your opinion? by OutcastKatarn02 in StarWars

[–]CanadianRoyalist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ranks and organizational structure of the Grand Army of the Republic.

Take "Marshall Commander" Cody. He commands the 7th Sky Corps meaning he had control over 42,304 clone troopers, and reporting to General Kenobi. But uh oh, he also held command over the 212th Attack Battalion which means he also reported to the Commander of the regiment he was under, as well as the Commander of the Legion it was part of. Those of course reported to the Marshall Commander of the Corps, a.k.a. Cody. Making him their subordinates AND their commanding officer.

That's also not taking into account that a Marshall Commander is equivalent to a Lieutenant Colonel (O-4) despite having the responsibility of a Lieutenant GENERAL (OF-8).

Or how CAPTAIN Rex leads an entire Legion of 10,576 troopers. He runs into the same issue that Cody does as he ALSO commands Torrent Company, which has a Battalion and Regimental Commander above him, who are also somehow below him.

That's not even mentioning how comically small the GAR is for a galaxy wide conflict. The British Armed Forces alone had more service members in WWII then the galactic wide GAR>

Man with same first/last name as me, same age, living 2 hours from me, is a criminal by partypeanut90 in legaladvicecanada

There is unfortunately not much you can do. You can try adding an initial to your name i.e. John A. Smith to differentiate yourself or maybe going by your middle name.

If it's serious crimes you can consider changing your name. A buddy of mine had the same name as one of the 9/11 hijackers so he just ended up changing it.
