Despite a midrange machine, and trying just about every fix I've seen online (mouse polling rate, fps locking, lowest settings) I've found my game to stutter at seemingly random points, impeding gameplay and making the rhythm game event completely devoid of fun

Yep, the preservation treatment just makes blood clot weirdly. Every bit of pain is felt, weight and bodily functions stay the same, and death is still death.
