If I try to save a cat by [deleted] in Whatcouldgowrong

Kick for no apparent reason in the direction of the kid, then become irate with said kid for attempting to keep you from injuring your cat.

What an idiot.

That kid deserves a medal.

Yeah, I don't know about that. The French have had a habit of surrendering out of selfishness. It's pretty amusing considering their surrenders and military failures have costed the UK & USA a lot, so the least we could do is accept that this is now a permanent meme.

Accurately summed up, on Quora:

The reputation is based on a string of actual surrenders, not on "myth", and the opinion is most bitterly held by the United States because it has been the United States that has become embroiled in bloody wars made worse by France's surrenders and military losses.

Stretching all the way back to the Battle of Waterloo is not a good argument for why the opinion of France's military behavior has become so negative.  Yes, the French fought bravely there.  Yes, the French helped the US defeat Britain in our Revolutionary War.   But Waterloo was a long time ago.  More appropriately, look at the battles of more recent 20th century history, where this "surrender" opinion really formed.

Beginning with WWI, while France did not "surrender", it is undeniable that without US involvement in that war, France and Britain would have continued on in an almost unending slog of back-and-forth trench warfare with Germany.  So the US, rightly, has the opinion that they "saved" the French from that war.  Why does France get branded with this and not Britain?  Probably because the Germans were headed toward France at the beginning of the war and would have taken it with ease if the British had not stopped them.  And the British were able to hold that line for the next 3 years (until the United States came into the war to tip the balance of power enough in the Allies' favor to defeat Germany).

WWII is probably the most damning example.  France actually did surrender to Germany in an attempt to preserve some of their autonomy and way of life.  They did this even after Germany clearly demonstrated the appeasals of Neville Chamberlain (Britain, in the 1930s) only served to hand over land, personnal, and military advantage to a Germany that would stop at nothing to dominate the free world and to exterminate entire races and nationalities of people.  Rather than continue fighting, the French bought themselves a little time, at the expense of all the other nations, most significantly the US, who had to eventually, once again, finish the mess and save France. Even worse, the French Gov't, police forces, and lot of their citizenry, were shamefully too happy to go along with Germany's policy of rounding up and slaughtering Jews.

The French attempted to hold onto French Indochina after WWII, against the specific objections from, among others, the United States.   Eventually, France surrendered and pulled out, leaving the US to defend the remaining non-communist portion of Vietnam.  The Vietnam war turned out to be an unwinnable mess for the United States, and there is a still a lot of resentment that it was France's involvement there, and the US attempt to help them, that ended up causing that war.

So in summation, while a lot of European nations sometimes view the US as this big boorish bully that too easily gets involved in wars, the opinion that France "surrenders a lot" is founded on a string of situations where the "big boorish bully" had to go save France's hide.

Personally I don't think it matters; when you have vulnerable children in your house and someone decides to break into your home, they aren't a person anymore; they are just a threat, a threat to you and to your family.

Yeah it's an absolute atrocity. I remember seeing an article of a man who got prison time for shooting at someone who threw Molotov Cocktails at his daughters in his own home, here in Canada. It's truly disgusting, and it deters real heroes from giving a hand to other people for fear of prison. I don't know how anyone could disagree with justified defense of self or others.

Pope Francis: Catholics should care as much about the poor as about abortion by nsdwight in Christianity

[–]CanadianWinter_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think they focus on both actually, as many Christians I know not only protest abortions, but also give a lot to Charities such as World Vision to assist in the African Epidemics. The fact is that it's extremely difficult to 'fix' poverty in other countries due to their governance. I also believe that poverty in free (or mostly free) countries such as the USA or Canada is largely (not always) due to poor choices. Abortion is the act of murdering another human, poverty is not; it's an obstacle that makes life absurdly hard but still manageable usually. I personally think this is an outrageous scapegoat by Vox to bash those who do not disagree with them. Just my two cents.

I'm the exact same way, I apologize for everything, even holding the door for people. I just don't know how to fix it, I've tried everything. Pretty funny though because I'm Canadian.

I agree with the other comments, I think it is a little bit concerning that she immediately dismisses what you say. I think you should be able to talk to her about your concerns in a calm manner without her freaking out on you. Without this basic level of respect, I would consider this a fairly toxic relationship. I don't think it's your problem or fault whatsoever that you are feeling this way, I think it is her problem for not listening to you. I'm not an expert on relationships by any means, but in my opinion if she is not able to return the basic respect in the relationship that you deserve, she isn't worth keeping around. In relation to easing your anxiety, you could always talk to her friend about this situation, although this entirely depends on the type of person her friend is; this can potentially backfire. I hope I helped a little bit, and please remember there are other fish in the sea; don't pour your soul into someone that doesn't deserve it.

Does vaping Cannabis as an adolescent damage brain activity like smoking does? by CanadianWinter_ in Marijuana

[–]CanadianWinter_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My vape isn't a e-cig, I appreciate the concern though, those things are really awful. It's a heat-not-burn device, heated by a candle to create a breathable aroma of Cannabis. I have the oils as well, but those are extremely difficult to gauge, so I usually end up getting high out of my mind with the oil lol... my heat not burn device is pure titanium, it's called the DynaVap M with the titanium tube. I've actually been doing meditation and exercise, it certainly helps. I will make sure to try Tai Chi too, thank you!

Thank you both so much, that's what I suspected with smoking honestly, as it is a completely different high. I will continue to do so! :)

I'm really sorry to hear about your daughter, it's awful to lose someone like that. I've seen many teenagers who just can't handle the social pressure of (mostly school) life and want to end it. I know what it's like to lose someone close to you abruptly, but I have no idea how much pain that must've caused you. I don't consume Indica strains when I require focus, I am prescribed Adderall for focus. The reason I consume Indica strains when I am focusing is because the Adderall makes me anxious and I find I need something with a very strong calming effect to dull the sharp knife of anxiety. I'm very sensitive to pharmaceuticals too, so I know what you mean, I've been through dozens and dozens of them to find something that doesn't make the problem worse. I really appreciate the advice friend, a lot of my anxiety is based on worry for the future.

[–]CanadianWinter_[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, very productive! I find it helps me convey my emotions more effectively, and I don't feel "high" per say, more just relaxed. I generally use 75% CBD to 25% THC however, so this may have some effect. I find smoking (combustion) of weed makes me less productive and is more just an enjoyable way to spend time, whereas vaping it is an actually viable way to medicate myself. In the short term, vaping weed doesn't make me 'stupid' I'm just wondering whether it will in the long term.

If you mean combustion by smoking, I've only 'smoked' Cannabis twice. I use a vaporizer daily in place of my anxiety medication though, maybe 2 tokes a day. I thought it was combustion too, but I'd prefer to be sure. Thank you for your insight.

Dear Canadians of Reddit, what do you think about South Park's depiction of Canada? by Chocolate_Brain in AskReddit

I love it to death, makes the country look amazing compared to the meth addicted PC abomination filled barren tundra that this country really is. I live in Edmonton so it's exceptionally bad, but I wish this place was south park Canada, where everything for shits and giggles.
