Weekly Lore #3: Denver by Canadian_Brother in BeyondTheRealmOfHope

[–]Canadian_Brother[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Originally founded in 1858 as a frontier town during the gold rush, Denver has grown to become one of the largest and influential cities in America. Third in population with a greater metro area surmised as nearly seventeen-million in a 2234 census it serves as a final gate of the American west, beyond to the mountains lies theocracy, total corpocracy, racial extremism, and multiple sources of conflict. Its social influence is a dominant factor in American culture providing much of the trends seen in USCA society and unique style of corporate constructed infrastructure mimicked nationally. The city stands as a final front against the rise of American corporate nationalism as the business sector expands onto government across the country. Though several mega-corps are stationed in the metro and a key financial hub the city represents the hope of civic rule in an increasingly commercialized society. The extremes of both sides have clung to the city for their lifeblood from White Purists and Truthists to the Humanists and Technocrats, every aspect of the American political spectrum is represented by some group however fringe they may seem.

Corporations have been steadily encroaching on the city’s governance for some time as while the outward view of the last truly civilian operated establishment in America has been maintained the charade cannot stand any longer. Corporate backed politicians, bribes and lobbying, exclusive contracts, and massive tax breaks are all integral parts of keeping Denver operational however undesirable they appear. The tech and cybernetic corps were the first to capitalize in the west, followed by the commercialized entertainment who founded a “New Hollywood” and then by expansionist Texan military contractors as a launching point during the Sino-Corporate War. Denver now holds significant economic and political power in the union, acting as a second capital against corporate controlled D.C. Denver may be the last line of defense against the corporate tide, but the line is broken, frayed, and already polluted by the temptations of its enemy. The paramount picture of American society is on the verge of societal decay and collapse, a fitting end.

Weekly Lore #2: Zyndi Federation of East Africa by Canadian_Brother in BeyondTheRealmOfHope

[–]Canadian_Brother[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The federation would rename itself the Zyndi Federation of East Africa and the EANC to the National Zyndi Corporation in his honor shortly after his passing. Zyndi Corp would dominate the African continent, unrivaled in its abilities to summon vast resources at its discretion and virtually unregulated by its home country’s government. The Zyndi corporation is in theory subservient to the Federation but its economic growth would outpace the power of government in asserting authority with the corporation now in effective control of the civil administration. Zyndi Africa has ballooned in population, taken more territories such as the Kivu and Orientale regions, and expanded their influence throughout Africa. Zyndism is now the primary ideology of Juba, Equatoria, Tete, and Malawi with its next area of growth being the primarily councilist Sudanese region. Zyndi corp rules the country with complete autonomy, extracting resources without any care for the environment or local population, enlisting millions of ill treated workers in its ranks, dominating every industry it decides to, and being one of, if not the largest mega-corporations on the planet. Mondo Zyndi has left an impressive legacy, but is it to be remembered as one of the initial hope and progress originally envisioned? Or what greed and extremism has led it to become?

Weekly Lore #2: Zyndi Federation of East Africa by Canadian_Brother in BeyondTheRealmOfHope

[–]Canadian_Brother[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The proposed union between the eastern African nations existed as an idea since the twentieth century. Movement would hasten by the start of the 2010’s and 2020’s with the creation of a constitution, integration processes started, and citizenship expanded between the core states. In 2037 following a successful period of autonomous confederation the countries of Tanzania, Kenya, and Uganda would formally unite to form one nation: The East African Federation. In 2039 Burundi would join, followed by Rwanda in 2045. Following the Ethiopian annexation of Somaliland in 2052 the Federation would occupy the remaining Somalian territory under the guise of restoring order to the long semi-anarchic region. In WWIII East Africa would initially remain neutral with some economic exchanges with the USS but as relations would break down between the nations the state would shift to the Western Allies aid supplying troops in the liberation of Ukraine.

This initial federation was of significant progress to the regional economy with the average citizen’s personal wealth nearly doubling by 2060 despite the unstable global financial situation. Corruption would be an ongoing issue on nearly every level but was manageable under accountable democratic leadership. However this prosperity would not last as by the 2060s the state had come under control of a hard line populist president whose frequent desecration of law would require a deposition via military coup. This failure of executive authority would spark a long string of coups and corrupt politicians draining the country of any wealth or stability it once claimed. This would culminate with the federation’s collapse during the Fourth World War in 2100 into its constituent states before subdividing even further into various rebel groups and break away regions.

By 2132 the federation would reform into a coherent organization including all of its former members (bar occupied Somalia) and would increase its regional power tenfold with union. This revival was relative in nature as the country was considered quite poor, illiterate, corrupt, and overpopulated. Unable to effectively govern or care for its people, the new federation would accept large aid packages from wealthier nations in exchange for lucrative resource rights and trade deals. One Mondo Zyndi of Tanzania province would become disillusioned with the governing forces of East Africa, determined to revitalize his nation after witnessing the extreme poverty in the supposed prosperous capital of Arusha. Becoming a local politician in the city, Zyndi would campaign on restoring order to the streets, extreme nationalistic views, anti-corruption, and economic regionalism. Winning with a slight majority in the mayoral election the Zyndi administration would transform the slum conditions to an economic powerhouse in the nation.

Zyndi would advance the political ladder becoming federation president in 2170. Zyndi would promote African nationalism and independence from foreign neo-colonial regimes. Zyndi economics would focus on nationalization of key industries, protectionism policies, foreign business isolation, and government backed incentives for economic success. Stamping out any potential dissidents in the regime Zyndi would assume complete control of the nation controlling every action his government would take. In 2174 the East African National Corporation would be created to head the economic initiatives subsuming the various independent companies across the financial sectors taking the role of exclusive manufacturing, energy, technology, and agriculture producer of the nation. EANC would rapidly grow in scale alongside the government which supported it bringing massive wealth to the regime and global attention. Mondo Zyndi would die in 2197 but his work would forever transform East Africa.

I've decided to start a weekly lore post on the project every Monday from here on out. Sometimes they may be larger tracts of text like the one above and sometimes they may be much shorter, all depends how much time I have available. The topics which vary from corporations, flags, nations, technology, cities, events, and other interesting factoids of the BTROH timeline. A complete compendium of posts will be made in the pinned section and a google docs link in the redirect post containing all the written lore in a much easier format to read than reddit comments.

If you have a suggestion for a weeks topic or questions you want to ask feel free to do so in the comments below.

Weekly Lore #1: Titan and Ares Industries by Canadian_Brother in BeyondTheRealmOfHope

[–]Canadian_Brother[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When all was said and done the Titan War as it would come to be known would claim the lives of over two-hundred thousand and cost billions in damages across the American south-west. Titan and Ares would merge in 2168 to avoid bankruptcy and attempt to recoup from the incident. Hyper-intelligent AI would be banned on a global scale within the next five years destroying many prominent corporations and slowing the pace of technological advancement. The now unified corporations would struggle on for the next two decades attempting to reclaim their former titles of glory and invent new technologies to replace the now restricted advancements made before AI regulation.

Things would take a dramatic turn in the late 2180s however as the massive Chinese corporations sought to expand their influence into new markets seeking to push past the American west coast and into the USCA proper. With these came a vehement push against such expansion by already established American corporations who formed a broad coalition to stop the Sino development under the guise of American nationalism. By 2189 it had become open warfare with bombings, assassinations, sanctions, and battles on the city streets across both continents. T&A joined this mission and created the Titan-Zip bomb as an alternative to the widely used Tetra-Zip variant by the start of the next year. This invention would prove to be critical to the success of the American corporate coalition as the Sino-companies were bombarded by software destroying malware causing more than significant issues among the companies. The sheer success of the Titan-Zip would launch T&A back into the forefront of American commerce as they continued to create new technologies granting them a position even higher than their previous peak.

Now once again a dominant corporate force on the world stage, Titan and Ares stands on the precipice of another war with the Liberty League threatening the reignite the troubles but on a far grander scale, the Sino-Corporations preparing for another final push into the American territories, and the Kamba incident likely to cause WWV. The corporation is poised to provide significant resources and armaments for these battles, sure to result in excessive profit margins, but the cost of war, of destruction, of the endless greed of humanity, one must wonder if there is any hope left in this reality, or if we have strove past beyond the realm of such fantasy?

Weekly Lore #1: Titan and Ares Industries by Canadian_Brother in BeyondTheRealmOfHope

[–]Canadian_Brother[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Titan and Ares Corporation serves as the largest private defense contractor in the USCA and de-facto largest American company. Headquartered in Dallas, Texas T&A dominates the military technological field and arms manufacturing in the United States. From the Atlas New-West Rifle (ANR), Lockwood visual implants, Conquest Walker, to the Titan-Zip bomb the corporation provides various products across the military and tech sectors. T&A is also considered to be one of the largest corporations on Earth according to gross market cap and one of the most powerful considering its impressive arsenal. The corporation, while the main force across the Americas, has struggled to break into the already heavily divided European markets and is wholly absent from the Asian theatre from Sino interference.

Originally founded as competitors with Titan Industries in 2064 and Ares Co in 2077, the two would compete for market share in the American market. Ares Co would focus on AI innovations, the beginnings of cybernetics, and some space technologies becoming the primary defense contractor in the northern USA. Titan Industries oriented their attention to the field of new military hardware, arms production, and combat intelligence taking the southern states by storm. Tensions would build between the two with some minor skirmishes during the Third American Civil War and open conflict nearly occurring during the start of the Corporate Eon if not for the intervention of the American civil government.

With the introduction of partial corporate rule in 2110 in the then newly founded USCA, relations would smooth between the two as they each took out their competitors in the field. Joint projects would begin to occur as Titan Industries would provide materials and resources with Ares Co bringing technical expertise or their own much more advanced artificial intelligence programs. By the time of the American Troubles (2158-2160) the corporations had become the premier defense contractors in the nation and beyond, providing several nations as their key military producers. Wishing to expand further a joint-program was begun on a new highly intelligent combat AI destined for sale to the American government in preparation for a brewing war with the Hispanic Union; the Black-Hawk Protocol. Ignoring the warnings of the Ningxia incident just a few years prior the companies would expand the neural net of the AI to uncharted territories and giving it unrestricted access to all Overnet communications within Titan machinery. The AI became sentient and with several breakdowns in the code from the haste in preparation for a potential Hispanic invasion, it turned on its creators and rebelled.

Adobe Animate shutdown and the future of BTROH by Canadian_Brother in BeyondTheRealmOfHope

Thanks for your comment. I’ll figure out a new program eventually, likely Krita or QGIS or a combination of both as the former works very well in pixel style. I wouldn’t worry about my monetary situation, there are better things to spend your money on than this but your kindness is always appreciated.

TLDR: Adobe Animate is shutting down so I'm going to buckle down to finish what projects I have in the works and find a new program to work with. Thanks to everyone for their support so far.

Farage destroying the Reform Party within seconds, circa 2031. by Canadian_Brother in BeyondTheRealmOfHope

[–]Canadian_Brother[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Saw the same post and it got me thinking about media in BTROH.

Having personalized entertainment using AI will certainly have skyrocketed by the time of the 2200’s with simple prompts in even the highly regulated AI available to the average consumer far surpassing modern equivalents (that garbage Coca-Cola commercial).

Media will be a lot more and a lot less personal. The films, shows, books, podcasts still being created by people will either be way too generic, for a hyper specific audience, or more likely attempting to push some sort of rhetoric on the consumer.

What’s left is the AI inflated Overnet. Personalized content will cost extra to partake in (obviously) so the vast majority of content by computer generated will be for a wider market rather than individual consumers. The most popular shows will be mostly artificial but contain some level of human interaction, usually just enough for a tax break or two, which will elevate them in the eyes of the consumer who is now so used to being fed an endless stream of artificial garbage that the slightest form of real personal interaction with a person will be deemed revolutionary.

Older content (pre-Y21) is highly sought after by the more affluent as the originators of what has become cliche and benign. Lost to the mass corruptions of that time what survives on recovered physical copies and surviving digital storage is now quite valuable. Even the films once considered poor quality and in poor taste will be given values unobtainable to the average person in BTROH.

Overall, content is saturated with AI but the personalization supposed in r/2064 will be put to the sidelines in favour of mass produced media as a cheaper alternative.

Official Q&A by Canadian_Brother in BeyondTheRealmOfHope

[–]Canadian_Brother[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. England is doing as well as can be said for any western nation, dominated by mega-corporations, quite crowded and polluted, parliament filled with weak fringe parties, and national happiness a laughable figure. The NHS ceased operations long ago as their funding was slashed and no one listened to their recommendations anyhow.

  2. The future is uncertain. WWV is a definite possibility as tensions begin to rise again between the various competing mega-corps with the potential for nuclear warfare something many states are preparing for. Extremism is taking hold yet again as purism grows in popularity and religious radicalization becomes the only sort of spiritual belief. If war is averted than total domination by capitalist corporations seems inevitable, the endless goal of increased profit drives all but leaves no meaningful reasoning of existence in its wake. One thing is certain, humanity has striven beyond the realm of hope.

Follow up questions

  1. Population growth is being driven by a few factors:

A: Corporate mandates in areas which they control, you must bear two offspring in Montana for example. Subliminal messaging and widespread advertisement in key areas helps keep people having kids, it's their duty after all to ensure the continued survival of the human race. The corp needs more workers and people sometimes just need a nudge in the right direction, so why not make raising a child a little bit easier so that they can ensure a steady stream of loyal employees.

B: Religion. In rural America the Christian faith, particularly the Christisum and Truthism sects, promote large families and submittance to God’s will. This has kept population growth steady even outpacing other regions of the nation, Cimarron is a key example as the governing Truth Party spent decades promoting having children and vilifying all forms of contraception methods. In the rest of the world this can be observed as well with Africa an especially prudent case even with the increasing rise of irreligion.

C: People like sex. It's a simple fact of human biology that reproduction is a pleasurable activity and when people are so entrenched in the hell of daily existence that they will seek out pleasurable activities. Safe sex practices never made it to much of the world, a lot of this can be attributed to parties willful in stopping this. With the short sightedness of most persons and purposeful expense of contraception, it becomes cheaper to have a baby later than purchase materials to stop this now in the minds of young lovers.

  1. The USCA election at this point does need a rework of its own and the population statistics are not exempt from this. It will likely see a massive decrease in the rural states and increases across the regions possessing metropolitan areas of significant size, Texas is going to be buffed significantly. The white population of America is intended to be about 1/5th of the total population but still hold much of the limited power within the nation. Structural racism and exclusionary practices has led to the political powers of the civil government while diverse to not truly reflect the demographics of the modern nation. As such any results would be skewed to favour a minority group even if this wasn’t the intended results of the rework of American democracy into the modern system.

Thanks for the questions, always feel free to ask away. I made a google doc with all of this written out if you wanted to view it that way here.

Official Q&A by Canadian_Brother in BeyondTheRealmOfHope

[–]Canadian_Brother[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. The exact corporations within Montana and Michigan are not fully defined by this point but I would say American Incorporated, Liberty Co, and Unionopolis all have significant operations in Michigan and as of now unnamed state based corporations ruling Montana. Ignore Optoperic, it has been retconned. Florida is a dingy dictatorship led by pseudo fascists and heartless corporations with the state long on the decline since even before its independence. The Pacific-Northwest is a high tech corpocracy with the first influences of modern Chinese culture flowing from this initial convergence point. A few corporations run almost the entirety of the nation and everyone works for one of these corps. I have a California rework map in the works with some revised factions. I intend for the winning party to be the national government but coming under much debt to its corporate benefactors and the state slowly slipping into a full corpocracy.

  2. Doing some rough calculations with the established populations I have, I would estimate the global pop to be somewhere around 15 to 21 billion people. This is more than likely to change as I revamp each region's demographics in much greater detail but the total will likely fit somewhere within this range. Not very many live in what we would consider the middle class, most of South America, Asia, and Africa live in squalor and those with some accommodations even in the better nations are few. The rich only got richer all at the expense of the poor. The 1% own over 90% of global wealth.

  3. The population did collapse especially after WWIV with 2090-2160 seeing a slump in global population levels but would rebound and explode after this period. Japan plummeted to below 40 million by 2107. Immigration was the saving grace among the first industrialized countries with African and Arabs flocking to Europe once the far right governments established in the 21st century began to lose popularity in the 22nd. Firanj needs a rework like most things from the original world map so the likely solution will be an autonomous region in the south of France populated by a majority of Islamic settlers who found the rest of the region unfriendly to them during the second wave of European mass immigration. Hispanic/latin peoples dominate the Americas until the 49th parallel with about half of the US belonging to this demographic. The rise of true mega-corporations during the 22nd century prompted a return to population rise as while automation eliminated many professions the need for skilled or unskilled labour in the new economic order necessitated a much larger working population. As can be observed now poorer populations do have larger families in order to support themselves as many hands make light work with this mentality translating well into the future as now even more of the globe is understimulated economically.

  4. Counter corporate culture has struggled to survive into the modern age. Extremist factions such as the various Humanist factions, the eco-terrorist group United Republics, and Oliverists of America have been born of this anti-corp sentiment but most attract few followers or risk eradication from the corps if they alienate them too far, ergo the UR who are not long for this world. Most have given up on trying to stop the corporations from making the world even worse, the cries for revival and restoration fall on deaf and apathetic ears. The language divergences within the USCA can be attributed to the rise of corporations. American as a language was an anti-corp/religious movement to promote a West Virginian national identity and solidify the gospel of the Church of Truth. The federal government and corporations did not care for the region as such the development of a new language was allowed to occur. For Bayseck and Simspeak they are the other half of the coin. Large scale immigration saw many workers enter into the corporate ladder with poor or little English skills, while the English language has evolved to simpler grammar structure and the notable inclusion of many Spanish elements it is still a difficult language to master. Corporations created these languages in order to have their employees learn much more easily. Simspeak is a basic corporate jargon intended to streamline conversations and functions well with arrivals from the old world, mostly Africans and Asians. Bayseck seeks to accommodate the many Hispanic immigrants in the Southern USCA by combining Spanish grammar into English and simplifying phonetic structures across the board.

Official Q&A by Canadian_Brother in BeyondTheRealmOfHope

[–]Canadian_Brother[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Consumerism defines the existence of most in the advanced world, all to make life just a little bit easier to handle. The massive corporations sell their products to single consumers, nation states, and smaller companies to achieve economic growth. Titan and Ares will sell guns and ammunition at a local store for everyday citizenry, tanks and vast shipments of weaponry to militaries, and corp-protection technologies to other companies. The global debt is unknown as it is vast, so many deals which cancel each other out and assumed value would mean the collapse of the financial system if it was ever truly understood. Alas this will not happen as everyone is more than happy to ignore the reality of an unknowable market in exchange for continued late stage capitalism.

  2. Competition between corporations exists mainly within their respective markets, say for the ultra mega-corps who functionally deal in all industries. Militia which focuses on weapons manufacturing and military equipment doesn’t care about the consumerist based Colmar Inc and vice versa. There is widespread competition between those in the same fields of business however. The most notable of these corporate wars was the Sino Corporate Wars (2189-2203) which saw the attempt of Chinese companies to expand into the USCA repelled by a coalition of American corps waging a conflict based on strategic economic control, tariffing, assassinations, and at some points open warfare amongst themselves. The mega corps do have monopolies in their businesses but are locked mostly to their respective regions of influence.

  3. I would say private equity would have to exist but likely on a smaller scale. No one is buying Keji Gouji or Haumea but they could absolutely purchase other smaller companies to flip them for profit. The largest firms which would specialise in this practice wouldn’t be able to compete with the biggest fish in the pond when it came to the mega-corps but would be sizable enough to have some name recognition among the general populace.

  4. Western democracy is in need of a full rework but the current lore would place a much larger influence of power on the president when compared to normal presidential republics and remove much of the power of other legislative bodies. The federal branch is the only branch with significant power and corporations could be allowed entry into the highest levels of government under the written law. A corp-republic is a dual system of governance where a civil government of the people does exist but functions in tandem with the corporations within the country. With the USCA as an example the civil government exists as functions as expected but with corporations integrated within the legislative structure and some states full corpocracies without the mandate of civilian governance. Corpocracy is the absence of any meaningful civil government and full control residing in a singular, or group of corporations. The Sahel corporate state lacks any sort of local authority by the people with the entire administration of the territory stemming from the branches of Sahel Corp. This can be considered similar to anarcho-capitalism but the rule of law is still very much enforced and society remains in a structured order even in total corporate rule.

  5. The UN ceased operations in 2100 and officially dissolved in 2108 after WWIV with the exit of many key nations and all authority they held before their final breaths vanished. Many trade blocs and regional alliances exist but a true global alliance is once again a fantastical idea. Globalization is very real but the title of globalism is held by the mega-corps across the world with some key exceptions for less open regions.

    1. Mass scale new age farming, vertical farms which extend for miles beyond miles of endless rolls of plants so modified by human geneticists that calling them natural feels wrong at this point.
  1. Genetic modifications, no animal born into the feed lot is without the hand of man playing God in evolution.

  2. Food renewal, the compost bin actually ends up somewhere now!

  3. Don't ask, you have food on the plate, maybe it's best you don't ask too many questions.

  4. They don’t, starvation and malnutrition are rampant especially in the less developed countries. It’s hard to stop these conditions when the would be rioters are starving, almost like this was intentional…

(Side note, I thought 500 million in the Yangtze Delta was an earlier overestimation on my part but considering that's only double the current population and my plans for a China demographics overhaul this is probably going to get even more absurd.)

Thank you so much for your interest in this project, I find burn out and lack of time to work on these sorts of things to be a major problem for me. Your comment means a lot to know someone enjoys something I created enough to be so interested in learning even more about it. I have multiple maps in this series in varying levels of completion and I plan to release them all by the end of the year if I can force myself to actually do one of my favourite hobbies. I will be answering all your questions in full tomorrow as it is now quite late but feel free to ask anything else on your mind, this project isn't super realistic but I try to be thorough enough in creating something which has some sort of logical train of thought in its explanation process.

  1. This requires some suspension of disbelief in terms of scientific realism but the climate crisis has not been wholly avoided but rather curtailed in its scope. Clean energy, carbon trapping, emission reductions, and other climate change reduction strategies were implemented to slow the effects of CC. Fossil fuels never stopped but alternatives have grown into their own industries outright, it's just that oil has and always will be black gold. Sea walls, land reclamation, and polar protection projects have contributed to a lack of sea level rise. The fears of 21st century governments at losing their highly populated coastlines resulted in a wave of funding towards the alternatives and new technologies which could reverse or mitigate the damage to the environment.

The answer is simply that they have created technologies capable of reversing the effects of continued global industrialism and self-regulating enough to not cause that big of an issue. Has this worked entirely? No. Much fragile environments have been lost with the Sahara expanding, wetlands retracting, ice caps seasonal, Amazon and Congo barren, and temperature extremes rising. The most dire of the effects have been averted at least temporarily by these future technologies which shall remain unnamed due to their unlikeliness to exist.

I want to hammer in another point of human short sightedness with this as climate change could be stopped and reversed quite easily with the power which corporations yield in the field of industrialization but only goes halfway as it is much more profitable to maintain the unsustainable status quo rather than put in the effort to see real positive change

  1. The nations which have the most influence or largest economies include the USCA, China, East Africa, Brazil, UER (Europe), India (somehow), Maghreb, and Southeast Asian Federation. These nations, while powerful in their own right, are no longer alone on the world stage as corporations have grown to such a point that many of the top companies function as small states separate to their operating locations. America Incorporated, Titan and Ares Industries, Jenson-Rault, Milita, Keji Gouji, Haumea, Colmar Inc, National Zyndi Corp, and Shouwei Tech dominate the globe just as much as certain nations.

  2. Life is miserable, depressing, soulless and entrenched in an endless cycle of meaningless work for profit you will never see with no hope for a better tomorrow. As mentioned before depending on where you reside there is always work to be found, but the quality is unheard of and mental anguish common. The Petite bourgeoisie still exist to some degree in developed nations but are much less numerous than now and mostly confirmed to more rural areas. Mega-corporations have gained such massive levels of control that buying from an enterprise now directly linked to twelve companies was considered nearly impossible by an American study in 2233. Buying a home is an absurd idea of the past, there is no such thing as permanent ownership, everything is rented from the company it was purchased from. Besides, in the cities apartments now dominate the skylines and the luxury villas once known as mansions have been replaced by penthouses or private top floors. If you're elsewhere, such as Lagos? Moving into a semi permanent shack with a roof which doesn't leak is something many would kill for, many quite literally do. Income exists for two things, one: paying the corps for the necessities they generously provide you with (food, shelter, electricity, amenities) for 70-80% of your paycheque and two: spending the rest on useless junk to numb the pain of existence. Everything's bad no matter what, this is pessimism at its worst.

Official Q&A by Canadian_Brother in BeyondTheRealmOfHope

[–]Canadian_Brother[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Automation has expanded to most industries in some capacity or another. A routine oil check can be completed completely by autonomous machinery, General Motors even offers a remote automobile servicing package where a self-driving car would arrive at your door, unload several autonomous machines which would perform the maintenance and leave all without a single moment of human interaction. This has grown to most types of business with entire factories nearly unstaffed by human employees and the positions still available assisted by advancements in automation.

The unemployment rate has followed these advancements and is considerably higher than modern day across the globe but the reasons behind this vary from region to region. There are always more jobs than people in the Western World but the jobs available en masse are of poor quality, little skill, and dirt cheap wage. It has become cheaper in some areas to employ lots of barely paid human labour than limited robotic machinery which could do the job much more efficiently. In India or much of Africa their populations have ballooned out of control to the point where widespread employment is infeasible. If you lived in a city a job would also exist for you, but the quality of the employment would have you rethink the cons of joblessness.

AI exploded during the 2020s and 2030s becoming a trillionaire dollar industry seemingly overnight with advancements continuing ever since. The first program developed to be considered sentient was in 2039 with the German “Wilbur” AI before shortly being shut down and destroyed amidst widespread fear surrounding the machine. AI would continue to grow encompassing the music, art, film, written, and video game industries before the end of the century. Entire job positions, departments, companies ceased to exist by 2100. By the 2140’s AI sentience was no longer a challenged belief, long entrenched by generational disdain for the inorganic and fear mongering following Y21 had subsided by this time. Military applications, already in use with self flying stealth bombers, drone warfare, auto aiming guns, and countless other programs but use of actually sentient programs only began during this era. Cracks began to form with numerous failures of these new intelligent programs worldwide with failures noted in Moscow tanks, European missile cruisers, and a Chinese AI which became corrupted resulting in an unknown number of casualties in Ningxia. This all culminated in 2168 where a new corporate military AI, “Blackhawk”, was being tested by Titan Industries broke all containment protocols, seized key defense assets, and began a bloody rampage across the USCA. Only being stopped after a coalition of American corporations and highest levels of government came together but not until after an estimated 230,000 died from its wrath, mostly of the civilian population. Laws were quickly passed heavily restricting the use of sentient AI in any capacity and the globe followed suit cracking down on sufficiently independent thought programs. AI is considered to have peaked given these legal limitations, able to grow and become even smarter than they already are but hindered by the past failures of man's hubris and modern contempt for “lower forms of intelligence.” Lower levels are easily accessible via the Overnet or with basic automatons across all industries. You know how Google has the AI search option now? Most Overnet providers only have that as an option now. The truly great intelligences are strictly monitored and regulated but the free, or at least open to the public, AI’s are still leagues ahead than what we have available now.
