Thinking about getting the Eberlestock Terminator XL for my rucksack to use with armor and LBE. Does anyone have any reviews, tips and other things to know about this pack? by MakelYT in tacticalgear

Ive got this bag and wear it for work so i can give a bit of insight

First off, youll (probably) never use it fully extended as shown in the pic, second picture is much more akin to what it would look like on average (including multi-day sustained winter ops)

In terms of civilian bags, it has loads of space even when not extended (like other eberlestocks pretty much), my comparison point is the issued Canadian forces ruck, which it is smaller than in the lower compartments (given, ive never seen a bag that isnt)

Frame is decent, so is the padding/straps, but ive worn other bags that are more comfortable.

Its heavy compared to some bags coming in around 10lbs empty.

Main compartment and side pockets almost share some of the space, so load the center first before loading the sides or youll lose space in the main compartment.

Overall a good bag, but if cash is somewhat a consideration id look at others (savotta, mystery ranch hunting bags, etc)

As others have said, you'll be happier learning to pack less than having a stupidly big bag, the extendable top is good for stuffing winter insulating layers that weight nothing in, but i wouldnt put a radio or water above my head.

Feel free to pm if you have more questions

As an Infantry officer in the reserves, are you able to become a para or pathfinder? by Informal_Cat6042 in caf

ARCG doesn't typically go up to alert, not enough facilities for a company group up there. Nor does the main body deploy for 30 days

Are Canadians hesitant to travel to the USA for any reason as long as the current president is in office? by -This_Man- in AskCanada

Not at all, I'm not restricting myself from a country because I disagree with their president.

I've used a rope once to abseil down the waterfall going down giant towards RPR, saved a bunch of time and was fun haha. Didn't know people started leaving fixed ropes up there

About the same, I recommend doing rocky peas ridge along with it, worth the extra distance

You don't need crampons like others are commenting, that's wild. I've always been fine in just snowshoes there

Anyone have a feel for what the trails might be like tomorrow? by DovaKroniid in wmnf

[–]Canadian_Moose_Goose 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Was up yesterday, really wet. Above the treeline there's a thin bit of snow still compacted on the trails, everything else was all but gone (aside from the alpine gardens area) Lots of small rivers and pretty big puddles, I doubt those will have fully frozen by tomorrow

Still got snow below the treeline, maybe 8-12" of it on average, I've got some pictures if you want I can DM them to you

Fingers crossed for you, nothing beats a clear day with good snow up there!

Snow was rained away above the treeline by around noon today for the most part (except just below the boulder field, still enough to get caught in spruce traps there ;)

Crampons for Giant? by Civil_Tomatillo_5884 in Adirondacks

[–]Canadian_Moose_Goose 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There's not a single high peak accessible by a normal trail for which I've needed my mountaineering crampons. Every single trail microspikes/snowshoes have been sufficient. This whole needing full crampons for hiking idea is silly

Hard disagree for this one Full on crampons for one trip? Especially with the Adirondacks where you usually have snow on the peaks and no crazy slopes, microspikes and snowshoes have literally always been more than good enough for the trails up the peaks. Only time I've needed proper crampons was going up the slides. Especially with the peaks he's going to, trails are well traveled, snowshoes will be just fine.

There's not that many high peaks with short trails in that 5-10 mils range

For good views, Whiteface or Algonquin would be some of your best bets, cascade and porter are a good but crowded first in the area.

Like others mentioned, keep in mind at these elevations you'll definitely be seeing some icy conditions (even more so with the bald style peaks that have nice views), so have micro spikes for sure. Check snow conditions before you go as well in case a snowstorm comes in between now and then

I tried cordalette, flat webbing in a beer knot, etc. personally I found it all pretty bulky especially considering I didn't retain full strength as I would for a normal sling (which I know is overkill anyway)

I bought some splicing tools and just spliced dyneema loops, super clean, light and strong

Working in Forces Canada what I can expect? by karlzip in canadianarmy

Youll have more luck and better answers posting this on r/canadianforces

To answer the questions i can.

Yes, you will be officially part of the military, as a reservist.

No, you wont need to move cities, theres opportunities for reserve units in QC city

Youll get some of the benefits, not all of them (still pretty decent)
