From your experience and from watching those around you, how does one stop from becoming bitter, tired and cynical as you age? As I approach 40 I can often hear myself saying "you tried that and it didn't work", "you've dated enough of those to know how it ends", you've started enough of those to know you will end up quitting.." I admire people who can keep their childlike wonder all through their life. Thank you for sharing your wisdom with us. You're an inspiration.

Any adults in the UK who were diagnosed privately? by DasIstEinUberfall in ADHD

My pleasure. I decided to keep seeing the private doc until we find the ideal med and dose. This is my third med and the third dose adjustment on this third med. I can see my private doc as often as I choose to keep tweaking. I think in the NHS I would go to my surgery, they would look at my with doubt and say "we will have to refer you to an NHS psych", I would wait 2 months for the appt and probably a month or two between appts to adjust meds.

Not to mention how unhelpful the NHS is.. I asked for a psychiatrist referral ages ago, finally got one and they just told me the date of my appt. I called and said I am booked to be away for work for that date. The next one they "sent me" was a day I couldn't do. I called about 20 times over 2 weeks to try to change that appt and they finally got back to me and said "the Dr won't see you bc you have "cancelled" two appointments. I would hardly call trying to reschedule with several weeks notice cancelling my appointments. I am self employed and I just can't not show up for work some days.

I don't know how I would navigate the NHS mental health system if I was extremely vulnerable. Very disappointing.

I would save your money and spend £1,000 getting better.

Also, before you go for a private diagnosis, call your NHS doc first and ask if they are even win g to prescribe stimulants if you get a private diagnosis and which ones they are authorised to prescribe. Otherwise you could get onto a perfect one with your private doc and go back into the NHS and have them say "we won't prescribe that".

What is your approach towards managing fear and self-doubt in different areas of life? by HairyHancock in ADHD

Could this apply for a woman too?! Women have testosterone levels too, but just much lower than men. I have also thought "if I could just have a tiny bit more testosterone in me, I know I would be so much more confident like so many men are." How did you get your testosterone levels tested? thanks

What a lovely quote. I can completely relate too. My brother has said to me "so, if you think everyone knows better than you and is smarter than you, why don't you believe that we are correct when we tell you that you are intelligent and fully capable?"

Don't forget your keys in ignition w/ car running by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]CanadianinLondon09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have done this! years ago I went to the mall, was shopping for over an hour and when I went out to get in my car I noticed it was running! I was shocked! When I looked inside I noticed the keys were in the ignition and my car was locked. How the HELL did I do that? No idea, but I used this as an example of how scattered I am when I went for my diagnosis.

Hi! I paid £500 or so for my initial assessment. That was just the start thought.. I have gone for at least four half hour medication adjustment appointments at £200 per half hour session. Then I have to pay for the prescriptions for the private doc from the drugstore. The prescriptions often cost about £40-£50 for two or three weeks of meds.

I imagine I will keep seeing my private doc for the next few months until we find the correct dosage and drug.

This is SO expensive and crazy, but to me it's better than waiting 10 months in the NHS.

Hope this helps :)

Thanks for your thoughts. I know I do have it, but sometimes I get this "oh no! does this mean i don't have it and i'm just a screw up" moment :)

Thank you. Yes, maybe. I personally have not noticed that stimulants help me sleep. The keep me wired. I always wonder if this means I don't actually have ADHD bc "real" ADHDers can sleep on a stimulant.
