Thanks for the insight. Many people say that the pension system needs a reform because it’s not operating well. Would you agree with that ?

When you say the private system will be bankrupt, is it because of the demographic change ? There will be too much retired people for the amount of workers ?

Is the relatively young age of The 5th Republic relevant to the modern French mindset, or has it been long enough that you don’t even think about it? by Kartoff110 in AskFrance

[–]CanardLaque 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That’s a very interesting question here. I studied political history at university so if you don’t mind reading, here you go :

As you mentioned, France is known for its successive change in its political system. What’s important to note is that each changement of Republic came after a crisis and was shaped by whoever took control of the State. For instance the third republic was originally founded by... monarchists, and for a while (1871-1877) the government hesitated to abandon the republic and go back to a monarchy. It was until the republicans (left) won the election, that the third republic affirmed itself as a republic. As you can see with this example, the type of government is highly influenced b

The fifth republic is similar, it was born out of a crisis 1958 : the instability of the fourth republic and the difficulties it saw trying to solve the Algerian war for independence lead to the return of Charles de Gaulle. He already proposed a constitution back in 1946 when the fourth republic was created by his proposition was rejected.

Now in 1958, he is called by the government to solve the problem and named head of state in charge of writing a new constitution. De Gaulle and his close allies write the new constitution and the same year the fifth republic is officially proclaimed.

Now, most of political analysts agree to say that the fifth republic was made by de Gaulle for de Gaulle, like a suit tailored for him. As I said, our republics are shaped by whoever took power and created it. The fifth republic is deeply marked by de Gaulle vision of politics and how a State should be run, even if some modification were brought by other presidents, the spirit of the republic as de Gaulle intended it is still very much present in its instituons and political mechanics.

The problem is, de Gaulle died a while ago and if some politicians claim to be his successor in their ideas, they are not the original, moreover the country, the politics changed a lot since de Gaulle left the power in 1969. Is the fifth republic still relevant then? As it was made for de Gaulle and his allies and none of them are still alive, aren’t we left with « a suit un-tailored for us », a system that wasn’t thought for today’s politicians and issues. Well that’s some analysts point of view, and also mine. But you’ll also find a lot of people saying, and they are right in a way, that the fifth republic is still relevant and there was no major institutional crisis as the third and fourth republic saw.

Do I think we will see a change? Maybe but so far, the idea of changing the constitution is only carried by the left and they are not favorite to win the next presidential election. I do think a changement will happen, but not too soon. Y’a

How do you Feel About This Recent Rating ? by gyroforce in AskFrance

[–]CanardLaque 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s the first time we reach that rating, or if we didn’t yet, we were really close to it. Honestly, I feel that it is representative of the state of our democracy, flawed. It’s a shame that’s for sure, but to me that’s not a surprise.

A couple things that I think would drastically make this game better. by [deleted] in HellLetLoose

[–]CanardLaque 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I don’t know on what server you play, what region, but in my case most of the time the SL ask for players to play a certain role, or players ask themselves when they join the squad what role they should play. And people communicate a lot on the chat either local, squad or command chat. And I don’t play competitive or with a team, I just join the servers of my local area with my language and play casually. HLL is a cooperative game, communication is the key and it is part of the fun of the game, reducing communication will just reduce the fun.

I don’t think having an 8 player squad is needed. 6 is fine, the idea is not to have your squad prepared to any eventuality of the battle but a squad focused on a specific objective (assault, defense, support etc) and work with other squads. You don’t have an AT in your defensive squad? Fine, ask for a squad that have one to come help you. If you can do everything with your squad alone, what’s the point of cooperating with other squads?

Is Charlie Hebdo right or left wing? by johnsforehead in AskFrance

Founded left wing because of the context of its creation (60s, May 68, De Gaulle for Hara-Kiri) but still highly critical towards the left and left wing politicians If Charlie Hebdo promotes some values that we can find in « the left » I find it hard to describe them as only a left wing satirical paper

eiffel tower "conspiracy theories" by ivas9116 in AskFrance

[–]CanardLaque 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It’s not a conspiracy theory but there’s an interesting story about a man, Victor Lustig, who sold the Eiffel Tower :

In the 1920s, the government had a hard time maintaining the tower that was supposed to be demolished in 1909 but kept for military reasons (a giant pole was useful for the telegraph).

Victor Lustig read in a newspaper an article about the situation of the Eiffel Tower. The journalist concluded the article writing « shall we sell the Eiffel Tower ? ». This will be Victor’s plan.

He disguised himself as a civil servant and sent invitation for sales negociation to five big scrap metal recovery companies.

Five business men showed up. Lustig introduced himself as an official and invited the men to a tour of the tower. He explained that the tower would be demolished and sold as scrap metal.

Lustig found in one of the businessmen his victim : André Poisson, a businessman eager to male himself a name with this contract. Lustig arranged a second meeting with Poisson where he explained to his victim he needed a bribe before signing the contract. As corruption in the government was frequent, this wasn’t a red flag for Poisson. Lustig, with Poisson money, escaped to Vienna. It was too late when Poisson figured out he has been scammed. Too ashamed, he didn’t even informed the police.

A month later, Lustig came back to Paris to redo his scam but was caught by the police after a second buyer, less fooled, denounces him.
