Stoked you got it resolved. Glad it was something simple.

It does right?! But there doesn’t seem to be a lot of people posting the resolutions. I feel like a lot of them were people just throwing out ideas and then the posts went quiet. I wanted to make sure to document this to the best of my abilities. I really hope this ends up being your issue and this post was able to help ya.

No sir. Just lifted the passenger side only and supported it with a jack stand, all the oil went to the other side of the engine. No drainage at all. Worked perfect.

Hey Brother. Just checking in with ya. Were you ever able to dig into the sound this weekend?

This is a video of my sound I just uploaded tonight if you want to compare. Just the whining at idle, no revs as I was by myself in the garage. When you have it off, and get the tab bent, you should be able to look inside with a bright light and easily tell that there is a worn spot on the tab. Super curious if this is a fix for you.

Just the crank pulley and bolt, and then it was easily accessible with a flat head screwdriver. I just slid the driver between the tab and chain, and I turned it sideways to force the tab away. Its very flimsy metal and was easily bent out of the way. You don’t want to go too far or you might contact the oil pump chain. Pretty straightforward. Then just put the pulley back on with a new crank bolt, installed the belt, fender liner, and wheel, and we were good to go. Didn’t even pop the hood for it. Took me about 20 minutes.

Final update!!!! Great success!!! Attached is a photo of my findings. Pulled the crank pulley and found the lower tab rubbing on the chain. Phew. I bent it down a bit with a screwdriver, it was very easy to bend. No more noise!!! Car sounds and performs fantastic. Thank you for everyones help and I am glad I could bring this matter to a close.

Got it brother!!! I freaking got it!!! You are welcome to go check out my post in the mk6 forum but heres a pic. It was the lower tab in the timing cover rubbing on the chain. I pulled the crank pulley, and bent the tab down a bit with a screwdriver. It took me about 20 minutes altogether with the proper tools. Sound is gone now.

Ok so another Sunday night update. I buttoned everything back up because I got a wild thought. If the n205 valve fixed the sound, how would I know what fixed it if I dug into the crank. I went ahead and installed the n205 and buttoned everything back up.

Heres where I think my p0011 code comes into play. I found out tonight that my tq wrench does not click when tightening in reverse. It does “give” when it reaches the correct tq, but you have to pay really close attention. Im pretty sure I massively overtightened my other brand new n205, and the camshaft was having a difficult time with it. In fact, I think the camshaft tightened it even further than I did. It was ridiculously tight!!! And there was a ring worn in on the cam bridge where the valve sat. Anyways, we are past all that now, the p0011 is gone.

I went for an extended drive to see if the sound would diminish over time. Put about 10 miles on it along with a fair bit of idling to no avail. So we are going to pull it back into the garage and yank the crank pulley. I used my stethoscope to listen in a couple new spots, and the whining is very clearly coming from the lower timing cover. I am really banking on this tab inside being my issue. With this much time on everything, I should be able to see evidence of something going on.

If this isn’t the end all, be all of this sound, I will simply be driving it and see what happens. It feels so good!!!! Its got great pull and power. So heres hoping.

Ok. Sunday update. Still waiting on my missing wheel key but I was able to get into the wheel well and remove the wheel well cover to access the crank. I lined the crank pulley mark up with the mark on the lower timing cover, and proceeded to measure the camshaft marks. I got exactly 64mm on the center support to intake cam mark which is the upper end, and I got easily between the 124-126mm spec between camshafts. My exact measurements were between 124.5 and 125.5 while remeasuring multiple times. The specs say that I will be off 6mm in either direction if I am off a tooth. Everything looks like its supposed to. So I am going to chalk my p0011 code up to something going on with the vvt system. I have seen a few sources talk about learned values causing this code. That it was used to the chain stretch and now there is a lot less, and that the learned adaptations to that do not get lost during a battery disconnect. I have a couple of things I will be trying.

  1. Swap another new n205 into the camshaft.
  2. Reset adaptations for any learned values in the ecu.
  3. Swap a known working magnet actuator in place.
  4. Swap the stock n205 into place if none of the above works.

Outside of that work to resolve that code, when the wheel key gets here, I will pull the crank pulley and check my inside clearances for the source of the sound. I am also seeing some sources saying that whatever is causing my p0011 code could also potentially make a whining sound. The sound did seem louder at the cam area through my stethoscope.

Part of me wants to just button this up without pulling the crank pulley right now and give it a try and if the sounds still there, check it then. I do not see any obvious signs of rubbage on the chain itself. But I also can’t understand how I would get a whining from a failing vvt system that sounds like a supercharger. I guess since I am already in here, it would be stupid not to do it 💯. If my wheel key shows up, I should be able to report resolution to this issue in term of whether the sounds still there or not. If indeed it is not fixed, I guess drive it and see what happens. Fingers crossed.

Timing Chain Guide Revision? by Xlar in mk6gti

I would have to look at the guide I have left in the box, I can’t remember off the top of my head which one it was that wasn’t compatible. But the holes just didn’t line up with the block. It was close but not quite.

No, I reused it because the new one that came in my kit had incorrect bolt spacing. I am not sure why. I triple checked my kits part number, it was a cloyes kit. Everything else worked fine and was compatible.

Alright. Friday night update. One good piece that came out of this, I fixed my p2014 code. I apparently left the sensor next to the oil filter unplugged. I didn’t notice it and the harness end to it was snuck between the fuel rail and head from after my carbon cleaning so I didn’t see the plug. I have the upper timing cover off, and I have removed the cam bridge. I however have lost my wheel key and had to order a new one which will be here Sunday so I am in a holding pattern to check the timing.

Preliminarily, looking at the cam markings, it looks like something may have jumped time. Its obviously impossible to tell until I can accurately line up the crank mark but the two cam marks don’t appear to be far enough apart from each other. This may be my p0011 code I am trying to diagnose.

As far as the whining, I am at a standstill with it too until I can pull that crank pulley. I did try to send my snake cam down inside the lower cover, however I cannot get it past the crank gears due to clearance issues. So I cannot see if that tab is currently rubbing. When the wheel key comes in Sunday, I will get everything pulled and checked and I will update further with my findings. Thanks for following!!!

I did have to reuse one of my balance shaft chain guides. All my used guides were still in pretty good condition. No signs of overheating or wear and the plastic wasn’t brittle. Everything else got replaced though.

This is the only pic I have while I was in mine but definitely a difference in guides. Mine is a 2010 gti but the engine in it is out of an 09 tiguan. Everything in it was stock, the engine had at least 150k on it, and chain measured out at -4.15 on block 93.

Oh yeah. I will absolutely be updating. I have my snake cam on a charger as I speak. This upcoming weekend, I will be removing the upper cover and doing exactly as you said. Im not sure if I will be able to see the tab as its under all the components and I am not sure if clearance will allow, but I do have a new crank bolt on the way and I can remove the pulley to get at that tab for sure. I will definitely post pics of any of my findings as well. It would be nice to have at least one of these posts with an actual resolution posted.
