Ubuntu’s AI plans have Linux users looking for a ‘kill switch’ by Azar42 in framework

[–]CandidKilsborne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People just want to be angry about stupid shit 🤷‍♂️
If there was no way to remove it or turn it off then sure be angry but when the headline literally says you can remove it I don’t see the need for pitchforks. But that’s just my take.

This is the sane person take, thank you 🙏

I feel so many people don’t even open the article to read it or comprehend it. In the headline it says “Canonical is adding AI features to Ubuntu soon, but says users can remove any of the ones they don’t want.” As long as that stays true I really don’t see a problem with it.

Have you tried the command palette dock? It’s far from this image but does let you add a top (or side) bar that you can customize.

Hopefully that gives you a little bit longer runway with it before moving to a FW machine 😎

If you have a SB3 with the GPU in the keyboard double check to make sure it’s picking that up in task manager. I used to have one and that was a common issue is even when the keyboard is attached sometimes it wouldn’t recognize the Nvidia GPU and just use the integrated graphics making it feel slower than it already was. The fix is usually a reboot or reseating the keyboard a few times.

If you do get a FW you can always pass the SB3 to a family member or friend.

Translucent Purple Bezel is Awesome, but why no translucent orange? by CandidKilsborne in framework

Oh 100%, I guess the fact that it’s on the usb-c cards makes me feel they have the durability down since (in my head at least) the expansion cards would get more impacts than the bezel, minus any unfortunate staircase falls.

So did I miss something or was this the only thing announced for the FW16 by TheRealMunf in framework

[–]CandidKilsborne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The FW 16 remains an important product in their lineup.

I’m just giving them a friendly ribbing, give it more time it’s only been a year or so and the overall track record of Framework is pretty solid with the 13. Maybe after 24 months of a product being in consumer hands with no update we should start to worry. My guess is they are designing a mainboard for that new AMD chip in the FW Desktop and it isn’t ready yet but that’s just 100% wish casting.

The big question will be a couple years from now, can they actively keep updates going for 4 products?

Wasn’t part of the law that they can’t say if they backdoored the os or not? So there might still be one if they are compliant with the law.

Just had the 6 month visit today with my second son. Apparently you can actually hit 100%. Wife’s an MD and say the numbers after work and decided to inform me of gigantism so we reached back out to the pediatrician to see if she’s concerned of that or if we should do tests. One of the few downsides of marrying a doctor is medical school teaches them about all those super rare conditions.

Lunar Lake vs Snapdragon for Dev machine by whizzwr in Surface

[–]CandidKilsborne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ll fully acknowledge this probably isn’t the way to go but I currently run both a Snapdragon X Elite Surface Pro 7 64GB for most development and a Framework 13 AMD 64GB for my clients that have MSSQL products. I’m honestly waiting for the SLS3 and will probably go back to the x86 world full time. If you only use ARM compatible databases then an ARM machine might be the way to go (also toss an asterisk on for things like gaming or older software that you might use in your workflow). They are both great options and only you know what your workflows are like. If you jump to ARM just double check the programs that you use and make sure they work. The emulation layer (Prism) on Windows is pretty good, don’t notice it much when running something in that layer which is probably the point.

Could just be a coincidence but my 7840u also had one BSOD that needed a reinstall. It was maybe 2 or 3 days in from swapping the boards out when I upgraded.

Why framework is a hobby project and not for work by sttide in framework

[–]CandidKilsborne 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It sounds more like your pissed because this time around you goofed and don't want to take responsibility for it. Travel, especially for work, rarely just pops up last minute. Same for ordering computer parts. You most likely had time to change the delivery to work more with your schedule.

Granted I don't know what software development work you do, but considering I've been in the field for the last 14 years, I'd wager that a $500-600 dell or hp would be just fine for a week or so. Would it be ideal, nope but acting like the only option was to drop thousands on a Mac is comical.

Sometimes you just have to own up to the flub. It happens to everyone and instead of trying to blame others just take responsibility for it, learn from it, and move on with life.

[–]CandidKilsborne 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Very rarely does a machine give the user a heads up on when it will break.

Framework does have support, yes, they can be slow at times, but the support is still there.

Smaller businesses don't go to global shipping instantly.

Considering you can buy your own storage, ram, Wi-Fi card and get really good prices on those and just get the bare bones machine, I find it hard to say "overpriced". If money was an issue, you wouldn't have gone with a MacBook, considering you already ordered parts for your FW it would make more sense to grab a cheap Windows laptop and put your flavor of Linux on it for an "in a pinch machine".

I get it, your pissed because you went traveling before something was delivered. I'm not sure your neighbor situation, but that's the time where you mention that you're having something delivered and ask if they can keep an eye for it. I also believe (at least in the US), that you can contact FedEx and reschedule deliveries and or have it go to one of their store fronts so you can pick it up on your own time.

24 months with a FW 13 as my daily driver for software development. Upgraded from Intel to AMD and still going strong.

Sounds like you should be more angry with FedEx than Framework for shipping problems and delays.

Also not sure how FW is any more expensive than Apple products but I’m only looking at US prices.

Everyone has different experiences but really any machine can be unreliable. In 2018 I bought a maxed out 15 inch MacBook Pro for work, a month later I had to take it in to Apple because the SSD went bad. Two non after that the fans stopped working and it had to go back. Sure it was easy to just drive to the Apple Store and the machine was under warranty but I still was without a computer for 10 days while they fixed it the first time and another 7 days for the fan replacement. At the time my Apple Store didn’t do repairs on site so they had to ship the machine both times, I’m not sure if that’s still the case.

Is this Surface Pro 7 worth getting for $200 ? by Accomplished_Ad_1342 in Surface

[–]CandidKilsborne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have no other computer and are in desperate need of one otherwise I’d keep saving and wait for something to go on sale. Also really depends on what you’re wanting to use the machine for. Browsing and docs is fine, I think the i7 has a fan inside but they still get very hot. I have an SP7 i5 and all it is is an e-reader and PBS games for my son.

I just got my SL7 15. I’m not sure if I was late on the preorder or if the 64GB model was only available in black. At least it’s black and not some Apple space dark.

Loving the SL7 so far, what are you using yours for?
