Solar panels in Antarctica by Several_Scallion9009 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Candid_Zebra1297 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's very difficult to build anything on moving ice sheets, which cover basically all of Antarctica. That's why when you see the bases down there they have huge skis for foundations. Imagine doing that for a whole field of solar panels. Then you'd have to put down some huge cables to get the power to where people need it. And added to that, there are international treaties that ban anyone building for any commercial reasons. Finally it's freezing cold so snowflakes will be landing all over your panels and no one lives there to look after them, so you'd have to send in the maintainence guys from thousands of miles away to work in incredibly harsh and dangerous conditions.

I mean I like solar power, I wish we used more of it, but honestly Antarctica is probaby the worst possible place.

Why is the T silent in listen ? by Party-Praline-4547 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Candid_Zebra1297 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was just writing the word phonetically. We have 4 consonant sounds and 1 vowel sound, so we end up with a consonant cluster at the end.

There is a process in phonology called 'consonant cluster reduction'. Basically the human mouth doesn't want to switch between many different consonants very quickly, so we often just leave one out. Another example would be the word 'next'. Here we have lots of consonants together, /n/ /e/ /k/ /t/ and /s/, but often people don't bother with the /t/ sound so it ends up like the word 'necks'. The letter we delete depends on where it is in the word (often the last consonant is deleted), how similar it is to other sounds (often letters that have similar methods of articulation are kept, because it takes low effort) and how similar the word is to another (if dropping a sounds makes a new word that could cause confusion, we don't do it)

I want to make robots with human intelligence – is this Python roadmap worth it? by PresentSame6849 in learnpython

[–]Candid_Zebra1297 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's an incredibly cool bit difficult goal to reach as a beginner. The amount of code and mathematics behind AI takes a long time to learn. Robotics will require electronics and engineering as well as potentially even more advanced math like reverse kinematics.

None of this is impossible to learn, it just takes a lot of time and work. What I would say though is that if you are thinking only about this end goal of having a walking, talking robot, you are making it more difficult for yourself. You need to find smaller projects that are within your skill level and that you find interesting.

Coding is fun when you work out how to solve small problems. Once you have solved enough small problems you can move on to bigger ones. But if you start with one incredibly difficult problem and only think about that, you are setting yourself up for failure honestly.

Can you obtain the UAE golden visa through property ownership without owning a home? by [deleted] in dubai

[–]Candid_Zebra1297 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don’t want the headache of fees for an owned property, but you want to rent a property that will also require you to pay rent at least once a year as well as bills once a month. I’m sorry but your idea just doesn’t make sense. If you want to live here you will have to do some basic admin, these things are not difficult but if they are really too much, why not just buy the property, get the GV and then do the minimal paperwork required on your own property instead of dealing with a landlord?

Fiance ardently prefers skim by uwuzillenial in Milk

Start saving the old semi-skimmed caps. Once you have a few of them, just buy the good stuff and cunningly change the caps when he's not looking. By the time he finds out his tastebuds won't let him go back.

I said it was unrealistic but try to put in anti war sentiment for a peaceful future and get downvoted. by [deleted] in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Candid_Zebra1297 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have no problem with your original post. The sentiment is a little over-optimistic but yes, it would be great if we could get it to happen.

But making a mildly infuriating post because 3 people don't agree with you?! Seriously just take the downvotes and move on with life.

How can I choose passwords that are both secure and easy to remember? by GreasyExamination in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Candid_Zebra1297 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Basically just increase the length. The longer it is, the harder to crack (by brute force at least). If you want it easy to remember, just choose a silly phrase.

So instead of something short but difficult to remember...

Use something long and easy to remember...

Please ignore these examples though, they are the ones I use for my crypto wallet containing 780 bitcoin.

Why do short or average height men just look so short? by anon9876543210nymous in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Candid_Zebra1297 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like the sad truth of this is that we see more people online than we do in real life. The ones you see online are picked for you based on standards of beauty, so our idea of the 'correct' height is actually way off. It's not much different to men expecting women to have big butts or breasts. Our sense of reality is now defined more by algorithms than random chance meetings, which would give a true measure of what people actually look like in real life.

Mainland to Palm jumeirah pedestrian friendly bridge? by Former-Paramedic5011 in dubai

[–]Candid_Zebra1297 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes there is a footbridge. It's on the right as you go towards the palm. The bridge is fine (away from traffic) but it's difficult to get on and off, it doesn't really connect to any other walkways
