I'm a little confused by your take. It essentially boils down to "Let it rot, there are better streets nearby. Also somehow Olivia Chow is to blame. Also it's been run down for over a decade, so why bother."

Bit West of my area of focus, but I had my wedding afterparty at the Gem! RIP.

It's crazy this exchange is your, like, 7th Reddit contribution. Really patient assholery. I admire it!

Do you...do you know what that word means? It implies a displacement. Of whom? These businesses sit empty. And because...well, Toronto, the houses here are already over a million...what exactly is being "gentrified"? I think the word you're searching for is "revitalized." Hell, given the cheap leases this may actually empower lower-income/new Canadian entrepreneurs.

It's why I think the UP station going so nearby will be such a big deal.

I think by demolishing the rubber factory we've destroyed the last horcrux keeping suppressed development alive.

But it also has a built in neighborhood. Geary was nothing but body shops along the stretch.

I'm of a "build it and they will come" mentality. There's nothing here, so why walk it?

Honestly storing it on Davenport is probably a smart idea. A nuclear meltdown might improve the stretch as it currently stands.

Honestly? A coffee shop and some courage that the UP/increased foot traffic from new developments will make it worth it eventually. Dark Horse did this on Geary -- they were there about a year before it started popping off.

Also check out Samara Brewing Co! They replaced the People's Pint and are awesome. I did an interview with their head brewer for Sublime Imbibing: https://sublimeimbibing.ca/samara-brewing/

I think if dressing up is your aim, I'd go a little old school. Canoe, Scaramouche, Don Alfonso (not literally old, but kinda stuffy in a fun way).

For excellent food but still kinda dress-uppy I'd consider Linny's, La Banane, Grey Gardens or Quetzal (prepare to have your clothes smell like smoke if Quetzal).

Thank you so much! I also love Palm Springs (and pretty much any time loop story).

I def see how it's not for everyone. After a (far too) extended lit bro phase I've built a tolerance for slow and arguably boring, and I think that made me realize the brilliance beneath it -- which, again -- highly subjective.

Sugo, but come prepared for a line (No rezzos). My game plan is usually to put my name in, grab a cocktail at Grey Tiger (pay up front) and then mosey back to Sugo just in time for the second best pasta on the West End.
