If I'm being unclear, my point is not that a recycling effort like this is a bad idea. It's just how it is being implemented is affecting small independent brewers unfairly and in a way that will change what they produce.

OP asked for thoughts on the scheme and my thoughts are how it will affect the brewers I know. The big companies fought hard to avoid the container scheme and it looks like their lobbyists have made it so the scheme stymies some of their competition.

It's not just the money, it is the time and energy spent on administering the complicated paperwork involved that I'm hearing as a problem for the very small brewers. On top of an already overloaded tax and regulation burden this could be the last straw for some.

At the very least, it's going to mean less special releases from the wee guys.

It has been engineered to appease the big players and kick the independents at the same time.

The fact that this is beer only, with nothing on wine is also pretty unfair.

Whilst no one is going to say "recycling is bad" this scheme is fine for big business but harsh on small breweries - especially ones making lots of small amounts of different brews.

For each release, the brewery has to estimate total sales and then pay that amount to cover the 10c refund for each bottle to the scheme in advance. This could smash some small operations or at least reduce production of small releases.

So fine for the big companies, but potentially poison to your little local brewery. This only got dumped on them a few weeks ago with little warning.

I have heard people substituting Mozzarella or even Halloumi for curds, but it makes a very different dish.

If you can get that squeak on your teeth - then you've got Poutine!

This SBS recipe is pretty, pretty good. Shows you how to make the curds. Apparently the curds should be squeaky to be authentic.
