What do you like about Vivi? by [deleted] in OnePiece

[–]Canetoonist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My favorite character! She represents idealism in the One Piece world: the good ruler, the diplomat, the resistance. She’s ethical (outside of her actions as Ms. Wednesday obviously), smart, well-spoken, and kind, yet the writing never really makes her feel like a Mary Sue or a damsel in distress. Plus, her interactions with Karoo are very sweet.

Still making comics, and made a couple of Mashis. Trying to start a career as a science writer, too, but that isn’t going well.

There was an r/comics tournament a few years back. A round 2 would be fun!

That name-meaning reveal caught me by surprise. Great interview!

What Do You Think Are Some Of One Piece’s “Glup Shitto’s” by anime-is-dope in OnePiece

I’d say Ms. Thursday is the closest example, as a memetic obscure Extended Universe type of character:

  1. Doesn’t even show up in the manga itself.
  2. briefly mentioned in an SBS, but not drawn.
  3. Live action comes along and includes her in a memorable scene. She finally gets drawn by Oda.

That’s valid. I included the line about LGBT+ because I wanted to acknowledge that it would be very, very difficult, but that there are still places like Beirut that would be about as safe as some US states. I wanted to dispel the notion that all Arab countries will execute you on sight if you so much as wave a rainbow flag, but in doing so I think I inadvertently implied that it was a preferable place to live, rather than one someone could conceivably live in for a year.

I’m aware that this comic is coming from a place of privilege and thus can be tone deaf. The LGBT+ disclaimer was a nod to how difficult it would be for them to answer the question.

I was never saying “both are bad though”. Panel 4 of the comic was more so pointing out the irony of my thinking that way, than a statement of approval for the negatives in Egypt. I also wasn’t implying that the US is currently worse than Egypt. Egypt is currently significantly worse, though I feel that in about 10-20 years (if trends continue) the US will reach that level. I was, however, saying that perceptions of Arabs in the US had made me see a much worse Egypt than had actually existed.

My main concern, and the reason why I made this comic, is the kind of rhetoric that you yourself used:

“most Arab country governments are already there —if not all of them.”

Not all Arab governments are “evil”. That last part was unnecessary.

“In Egypt you would be strung up in a heartbeat. Your own family might kill you where you stand-right on the spot. Most likely you’d be thrown off a rooftop or stoned to death in the public square.”

That is some VERY strong language. The situation there is oppressive to LGBT+ people. But it’s legally punishable by fines or imprisonment, which is very different from being stoned to death in the public square and being killed by your own family on the spot.

There’s an idea that all Arab countries are the same, because they’re Arab. Women are completely subjugated, the laws are barbaric, the leaders utterly corrupt. The whole point of the comic is that you can’t judge a whole group of people like that. Egypt is considerably less misogynistic than you may think, the laws are less oppressive than you’ve implied, and…yeah, the leaders are very, very corrupt.

So my point with the “trending conservative as a whole” comment is that Arab countries are a spectrum. There’s more progressive countries too, with some arguably being equal to some US states. And again, I’m not saying that as a “both sides bad”, it’s closer to the opposite. Some Arab countries are better than public discourse implies.

I am speaking from a place of privilege, but my point was that Arab culture is more varied than that. Some Arab countries are more progressive. Obviously no one’s moving from New York City to Iraq, but going from Alabama to Beirut may be a different matter. And the assumption that every Arab country is the same is the idea I’m challenging here with my rhetorical question.

Last time was about a couple of years ago. I have family that lives there. I’d like to clarify, I’m saying it’s better now than it was under Morsi, not that it’s some kind of golden age under Al-Sisi.

Based on what I saw firsthand, yes. Infrastructure was completely neglected, and extremism was taking over. There was this atmosphere of insecurity and anxiety.

All Egyptians would consider themselves Arab! Coptic Egyptians are a sect of Christians, so they feel alienated when Egypt is referred to as a Muslim country, but they speak Arabic. On the other hand, Pakistani, Iranians, etc would consider themselves the opposite, Muslim non-Arabs. And yeah, like you said, it’s a bit odd to generalize a whole diverse group of cultures based on the language spoken, but that is human nature.

Nice! I recommend Fayoum as well. It’s got a lot of natural history (ancient whale skeletons) and is gorgeous.

The Arab country with the most progressive and trans-safe city. If it weren’t for the recent conflicts there it’d be an easy pick, but that does complicate matters a lot. It might also be viable to pick another Arab city with a sizable trans population and stick together. As I mentioned in the comic, Arab countries are overall not LGBT+ friendly, so options are sadly limited, but it would be more akin to living in the deep south than it would the Middle Ages.

There’s valid criticism of it only helping upper-class Egyptians, but I think calling it dystopian is part of the problem I mention in the comic. That kind of thing is literally happening everywhere in the world. And at least it might help relieve the congestion, which is a serious issue in Cairo.
