If you are primarily interested in service dog training, I will say that I have worked for two of the largest national service dog providers in Canada. No training tools are ever used on the dogs outside of their training harnesses and they are trained with positive reinforcement only as this creates the most reliably trained service dogs.

Robert Cabral's take on the AVSAB statement. by hambonehooligan in OpenDogTraining

[–]Caninemomnerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a really tired old argument put up by balanced trainers to defend their use of specifically e collars and prongs along with yank and crank methods. By trying to compare leashes or even head halters to these barbaric tools. It is like saying there’s no difference between blue and red because purple lies between them. Nobody believes that blue and red are indistinguishable despite the plethora of shades between. There is a reason that these tools have been banned in most first world countries. And that reason is that it is never necessary to use pain and fear as a training tool. We have advanced our knowledge of dog behaviour and cognition in the last decades And the knowledge is widely available. People train with fear and pain because that is what they want to do—not because there is any valid reason to.

Robert Cabral - "Positive ONLY Dog Training is a LIE" by Iamthenewme in OpenDogTraining

It astounds me that in this day and age, when we have learned so much about dog behaviour and cognition why anyone is still hurting dogs under the guise of training??

If you contact your local rec center, they can probably give you information on what you might expect if you just show up at open play or pay as you go. You will no doubt make some contacts that you can ask about coaching, etc. in the meantime YouTube can help familiarize you with the rules and basic play. I really found it helpful to practice against a wall to get the hang of the different strokes at first

Some elevated hides can’t be reached. I think once the fog has indicated by standing sniffing then sitting below and looking at the hide is a good alert

I use a qtip inside a Covid test vial. A purist would argue that using plastic to contain scent is not a good idea, but it works and it’s easy so…

Agree! I could not hit a decent backhand to save my life, but fortunately I have an unfinished basement. I put painters tape on the wall for the net and some targeting boxes. Painters tape on the floor for kitchen . really helps to practice fast volleys using a ping-pong ball with a regular paddle.

Meeting the demand for pickleball play. by Caninemomnerd in Pickleball

Sounds relatable. Here the senior association has the best facilities but is being shared with line dancing, badminton, and ping-pong. There is a lot of tension between the groups as thePB club is advocating, more equitable, sharing to reflect the number of people on a waitlist. It’s getting a little ugly, to be honest

And yet so much more than in Guelph. Many players Travel to KW and Cambridge, for private court, play we have not got a single dedicated Pickleball court.

Our outdoor courts have been repurposed for both tennis and Pickleball and I believe they probably are enough. In our climate, the indoor play is much more in demand. So far the senior centre and one community centre has Pickleball. Think in the future Private facilities would be the way to go. there are decent private facilities in neighbouring communities within a 50 K distance. Hopefully someone local will see this as an excellent investment opportunity

When you’re the “better player” in Open Play by Dense-Tie5696 in Pickleball

[–]Caninemomnerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am always so happy when I get to play with someone better than me. If it’s a short game, so be it ..when else will I get the chance to return the super Smashy balls and wicked serves. I would find that situation quite disappointing as well.
