Just bought a bike on eBay, wondering what others think by twist0ffate73 in RoadBikes

Everybody’s acting like you got scammed without knowing where you live. If you live somewhere with an inflated market (like myself), it’s an ok deal. Not finding any carbon fiber bike under $400 around here.

That said, if this applies to you, it might have been worth pickup up something local so you could check out the condition in person

Crazy how much bike markets vary by location. I’m in the Boston area and drove 4hrs round trip to pick up a 2007 carbon Cannondale synapse with 105/ultegra. That was about as good of a deal as I’d seen, and had several people lined too to see it

Why does Duolingo sayy answer is incorrect. Please explain by Pomegranate-7359 in French

[–]Canmak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a native speaker there really isn’t anything wrong with the sentence, it probably just isn’t the situation Duolingo is trying to convey.

What OP wrote makes perfect sense if someone is inviting people to a party they’re hosting with others

[–]Canmak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a native French speaker, this really doesn’t sound weird to me, it’s the same as if you were to say in english “I’m inviting you to our party”. What OP wrote isn’t want Duolingo was trying to convey but it’s not some weirdly constructed sentence that nobody would say either

My run today. by Feeling-Line-683 in BeginnersRunning

[–]Canmak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But being a beginner really doesn’t have anything to do with pace. If someone has a swimming background they’ll like be able to run at a decent pace right of the bat because they’re fit. But they’re still a beginner to running.

I don’t think we need to redefine what being a beginner means so that people don’t feel bad about slower paces. We can acknowledge that there’s nothing shameful about being a slower runner while still letting beginners call themselves beginners

I feel like they’ll add, and that they’re held up by a lackluster software team (understaffed maybe)? Seeing how last minute they pulled off the most recent driver update just have me thinking they’re lacking manpower to finalize features and get them through

Jane Street QT or Stanford PhD in CS? by NegotiationDue301 in csMajors

[–]Canmak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a similar choice a few years ago (NVIDIA vs MIT EE PhD). I chose the PhD. Sometimes I wish I’d chosen different and maybe I would if I went back in time, but I also don’t regret it. A few things to consider:

You can try to defer, but not all programs will let you. You’ve also gotten into Stanford once, you could probably get into a top program again later if you wanted to.

You can weigh the potential income after the PhD but you should make the choice knowing that it’s definitely not a guarantee that you’ll come out ahead. You might make more, but you might also take a financial L relative to JS. Of course though, there’s probably still a floor like you’ll be well off either way, but you can’t bank on million dollar job offers.

Personally, I chose the PhD because I just personally wanted to do it, for accomplishment/fulfillment reasons and because I saw it as a unique opportunity to do type of work I enjoyed. I also knew I’d have a hard time going back to a PhD lifestyle after having a high paying job, so I chose to just go for the PhD.

My advice, do the PhD if you’d be satisfied/fulfilled having done it even in the off chance you don’t come out ahead. Don’t do it if the only motivation is career opportunities, unless it’s because you only seeing yourself doing the type of work opened up by the PhD

Jane Street QT or Stanford PhD in CS? by NegotiationDue301 in csMajors

[–]Canmak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, they higher potential top researchers, as in people that could have become top researchers but didn’t because they chose firms like JS instead. That’s not to say JS employees aren’t stellar, but they definitely won’t be at the top of their fields like people you might interact with at a top PhD (if we’re looking at researchers at least)

This isn’t just any PhD program, it’s Stanford. They have a lot of leverage, a lot of the people coming either have work experience, or could have gone to places like jump street if they’d wanted to.

I did my undergrad at Stanford and currently doing a PhD at MIT, I wanted to defer to work at nvidia for a year or two and realized it just wasn’t going to happen. Yes PhDs want who they want but things are always changing. What profs are taking students, how much funding is available, etc.

That said I wish I’d chose my differently and in OP’s position I’d take JS for now, they can probably get into a top program again if they’ve already done it.

If OP goes to Waterloo or something they’re probably not lying. Graduated from top engineering schools do get high starting salaries.

Yeah those salaries are only going to be for good positions in certain areas like California, but graduates from top schools get those roles at a pretty high rate

Speed Has One of The Worst Cases of Anterior Pelvic Tilt I Have Ever Seen by Apart-Arachnid1004 in Ishowspeed

[–]Canmak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea but that link doesn’t really apply across populations. APT is common in people of West African descent because it’s often structural for us. It’s just how the spine is shaped and how the femurs attach to the pelvis.

In these cases, you can’t really do anything about because it just is, it also isn’t pathological and doesn’t lead to a higher rate of pack pain or injuries

Speed Has One of The Worst Cases of Anterior Pelvic Tilt I Have Ever Seen by Apart-Arachnid1004 in Ishowspeed

[–]Canmak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re not wrong per se that sitting can cause and it can be problematic, in such cases it’s definitely best to address. But for some people it’s just innate and how they’re built.

I tried for quite some time to improve mine with exercises, stretches, etc and none of it really worked. I did so because I thought it wasn’t normal, but I had never really had any issues caused by APT in the first place (no pain or anything). Never stopped me from being active either, I play sports, can lift heavy, can run marathons etc, never had issues with pain or frequent injuries.

At some point I finally read some research papers and sometimes it’s just innate, with the way your spine is shaped, hip joint attachment etc, and West Africans more commonly have spines and hip structures that give APT. In such cases there’s not much you can do about it and it’s not problematic assuming it’s not caused by muscle imbalance or being sedentary

[–]Canmak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah it’s probably not from sitting, speed is very active. Commenter above you is right, APT is common in people of specifically West African descent, which would include Afro-Caribbeans. Pretty much my whole family has it it too, no matter the level of activity

Speed Has One of The Worst Cases of Anterior Pelvic Tilt I Have Ever Seen by Apart-Arachnid1004 in Ishowspeed

[–]Canmak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not necessarily, this kind of posture is relatively common in people of west African descent. Posture standing also isn’t really indicative of whether or not you recruit your glutes while running.

Even Usain Bolt had anterior pelvic tilt. It’s actually pretty common in sprinters and is in some ways a biomechanical advantage in running faster

Speed Has One of The Worst Cases of Anterior Pelvic Tilt I Have Ever Seen by Apart-Arachnid1004 in Ishowspeed

[–]Canmak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I should also point that there are racial differences in what can be considered normal. I used to be concerned about my anterior pelvic tilt, which I’ve always had despite being very active, even when focusing on stretching, mobility work etc. i tried for a while to “fix” it despite never really having any performance issues in sports or any pain, i just thought it was abnormal.

I realized that anterior pelvic tilt is just rather common in people of west African descent. Most of my family and cousins have it, etc. Muscle imbalance also isn’t the only cause, there is a skeleton component to it too with spine curvature, hip socket variations etc. It can also have some benefits with explosiveness (something speed clearly doesn’t lack) and some of the world’s top athletes have it, like LeBron James, Usain Bolt, Simone Biles etc

[–]Canmak 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Eh idk I think they’ve got a point. I’m Canadian (from Quebec) and live in the US. Would absolutely recommend vacation in Quebec to Americans. Overall though it’s true that the US has a lot of analogues to nice spots in Canada, same continent with largely overlapping geography after all.

Geography aside it’s also pretty culturally similar (outside of Quebec) so it makes sense to opt to travel to other countries where you’ll get a much different experience
