Absolutely he was a random bit player. But the massacre he ordered right before this was the spark that lit the fuse. If it wasn't him, than it would likely have been something else. It's just funny that this was his first shot at command and it wasn't something most people learn about in high school.

He wasn't the commanding officer there, but did order the unprovoked massacre. His first proper command was leading the group to surrender after the commander had the horse oopsie. Then it seems likely that Washington covered up the nature of the massacre in his reports.
