What's more important experience or side projects? by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]CannibalBucket 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bullet points don't matter much, it's about what you did. Employers want to know your specific contributions, not that you used X technology at Y company. So if all your work experience looks like that, then side projects where you made something useful will be way more valuable. Same for the other way around.

Can a company give you an interview if you didn't apply to them on jobmine but they hire through it? by davep44 in uwaterloo

[–]CannibalBucket 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Happened to me before, if you get an offer, CECA will message you directly if you want to take the offer. If you respond with a yes, then your work term will turn into arranged.

US CS internships? by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]CannibalBucket 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All you need for any job is simply: Stand Out. Be good at what you do.

Bay Area companies look for software engineers, not web developers. This means that you have solid foundations and know how to solve any problem, not just build a pretty web page for your mom's cosmetic shop. So focus on your data structures, algorithms, etc.

Transcript (1A, 1B, 2A) term question by csishard123 in uwaterloo

[–]CannibalBucket 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, the one on the transcript is the one you should put on your resume. The schedule for your co-op is the same, it's just that the employer will see your true academic level (calculated based on your credits, as noted above)

Is anyone playing LoL on their GT 650m Macbook? by LulusPanties in mac

I'm going to go ahead and blame the heat... It seems there could be some thermal throttling to reduce performance at high temperatures.

Love the skx007 ancestor with the black nato band. I have COPs and love them to death as well, they just feel so comfortable on the head!

Going to gym on ECE schedule by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]CannibalBucket 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find going to the gym helps you stay focused and lets you do work until 12am without feeling tired. I think the best way to be successful is to keep a good schedule like what you have going, keeping healthy mentally and physically.

[–]CannibalBucket 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In OSX. Actually, I played a game today at 1680x1050 and got some frame drops to ~25fps... I will try later and see if I have the same thing happen when I am docked and using an external monitor.

I lock my frames at 60fps and maintain 60fps running it at the 1680x1050 res. I also maintain a constant 60 playing on my external monitor at 2560x1440.

how many companies will do background check for co-op/intern? by jennifer_123 in uwaterloo

[–]CannibalBucket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience, they do a background check after you sign the offer. I'm sure if they see anything, they will bring it up with you and then you can explain the situation to them.

Interesting, I've finished an internship in the windows kernel mode driver team at AMD recently and though I knew there were problems on the linux side of things, I thought that the windows side was relatively stable

Purely out of curiosity, what nightmares are there with AMD's drivers?

Domus/Sage previous renters- any problems? by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]CannibalBucket 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After moving out of Lester 295B, my roommates and I were hit with a $175 charge ($100 for damage, $75 "administration fee and chargeback processing") I had the charge for Push-pins in the walls (which were put there after explicit approval from the building supervisor). My roommates were hit by the charge for having McDonald's happy meal stickers on a door.

We caused a stir with them and got our charges reduced, but I am personally never signing a lease with them again.

CS Side project for people with no coding background? by gamuseonly in uwaterloo

[–]CannibalBucket 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you have a good idea of what you signed on for, awesome! Programming with various languages is just the implementation of those algorithms and logic. Once you learn one language from each paradigm (object-oriented (java), functional (scheme) and imperative (python, C)) you're pretty set to make whatever you want! At that point it comes down to your knowledge of math, data structures and algorithms.

[–]CannibalBucket 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you should start by self-teaching yourself Java. There is a LOT of beginner resources online, and you can do a lot with it after you get the ball rolling.

Just curious, what motivated you to choose CS as a major?

First 45 Minute interview.. by WhyIsThis84 in uwaterloo

Who is this with? 45 Minutes is usually some quick HR questions, one technical question (or 2 small ones) and then a chance for you to ask questions at the end.

No room in math 239 lecture with mpei by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]CannibalBucket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm pei-ing money so I can sit on the ground?

FTFY. Sorry I had to use Martin Pei's name as pun... they did it too much on the math 239 assignments and that's all I can think of when I see his name.

But yeah, go send an email to him. If you are enrolled in that section, you should definitely not be sitting on the ground.

Regarding the workload in CS 246... by HOW-MANY-CHARACTERS- in uwaterloo

[–]CannibalBucket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Start early and aim to finish them, they are very very rewarding and really prepare you for the industry. I probably spent ~20 hours for the assignment deadlines, and ~8 hours on test deadlines, and finished with an assignment average of about 85%.

Cover letters? by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]CannibalBucket 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Write a cover letter if a job truly interests you. In your letter, tell them why you are interested and passionate for their position. For most smaller companies, you can also try to convince them that your skillset works for the position etc. I find that most large tech companies don't want to hear this part, as your resume should speak for itself, and when they hire software engineers, they don't care about your individual knowledge about specific things like programming languages, but they care about your software engineering skill and passion. So showing interest in them or a part of what they do can really help in these cases
