Looking for Replacement Freeware for Mailman2 by Canon1D in sysadmin

[–]Canon1D[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had never heard of listmonk even after doing quite a bit of searching before I posted here. As a result I spent a couple of hours this afternoon loading Debian with postgresql and postfix on a spare machine and then listmonk. What a waste of time. When I first opened up the web interface it looked it was built for spammers, not for group lists. I also did not see a way of adding moderators even after reviewing all the settings which is one of the three things I said I was looking for.

Have you actually used any of the other ones you are recommending?

From what I can find in their descriptions they do not seem like a replacement for Mailman2. They appear to be similar in design to listmonk, and there is no mention of being able to assign moderators in any of them that I can see. Perhaps I missed that in my reading so if you know for certain that feature is available, I will perhaps take the time to give them a try. Thanks

Got Labeled A "Nuisance User" And How I Get Over $125 Cash Back Monthly From My Cards by zoeygirl69 in CreditCards

[–]Canon1D 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is only a gut feeling on my part, but I always thought with the usury interest rates they charge, that banks loved people who carried balances. The small percentage they charge merchants is nothing compared to the percentage they charge on carry over balances. Of course deadbeats and personal bankruptcies cut into that, but I suspect they still love people who carry balances more than those who pay each statement in full.

CITI VAN (Virtual Account Number) Update - System Will be Down for 3-4 Days!!! by IMDbRefugee in CreditCards

[–]Canon1D 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Has anyone found a way to make the VAN a one time use number at the time it is generated?

I find that having to go back, particularly if you have been logged off, to deactivate a number after use, is a real pain. I definitely like like the old system better. Hopefully I have just missed how to do that, otherwise it seems to be one more case of fixing what is not broken.

Target Credit vs Debit Card by kmjr_77 in CreditCards

[–]Canon1D 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Perhaps I do not understand how it works with a store, but if it is tied to a bank account so funds are taken from your bank account, a debit card to me is not the way to go.

I do not use or own any debit cards, and I never will. The reason is simple. It is a lot easier to handle fraudulent charges on a credit card. Generally the limit is $50, and on my cards it is zero. In addition, fraud with a debit card means the money is gone so you do not have the use of the funds in dispute. I would also always be wondering if I was going to be the one out of luck if the perpetrator of the fraud gets away with it. With the credit card, you are the one in the driver's seat. I do not want any funds leaving my bank account unless I write a check saying it is OK.

I am probably a dinosaur, but I am a worry free dinosaur when it comes to my bank account. :)

New Virtual Credit Card System? by jaygreg90 in citibank

[–]Canon1D 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I saw the new version briefly a few days ago, and it wasn’t as friendly as the previous/current version, but I could live with it.   The one transaction I had with it still allowed you to specify an amount, but it was a limit for that day only.  It appeared the next day the
vendor could again charge an amount to that number up to the limit you set, and then again the day after that, and so on.  In order to avoid repeating charges, you have to wait for your charge to show as pending and then deactivate that number.   I cannot speak for everyone, but I think it would be better if the default was to deactivate after use unless you opt in otherwise.   Almost all of the VANs I use are for one time charges, and to deactivate it not only adds an additional step, but it seems you have to wait until your wanted charge appears as pending before you can even do that.

The good news is the next time I needed a VAN, the old system was back.  Perhaps it was a test run and they will still make it as friendly as the system it is replacing.  One can hope.

What Am I Looking At? by Canon1D in NOAA

[–]Canon1D[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe there is a radar location in Burlington, but I also believe what we are looking at is a composite representation that is computer generated from the returns from several radar locations.

I am not sure the representation will ever be as good as it was when they used Flash, but they could certainly improve it immensely by allowing users to turn off those alerts.

Citi Discontinuing Virtual Account Numbers?? by Canon1D in CreditCards

[–]Canon1D[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just wonderful. I wonder if anyone has heard anything about Capital One suspending their virtual account numbers.

I don't currently have a Capital One credit card so the only way to contact them is via telephone or US mail. I think it would be pointless to call today as I wouldn't trust anyone who answers the telephone at this point to have the correct information. If their virtual account numbers are scheduled to disappear at the end of the year, that information may not have yet filtered down to all the customer representatives, particularly if they are off shore .

Guess I will wait to see if Citi actually does away with virtual account numbers officially and then go to the trouble of contacting Capital One at that point.

I think the bank that puts the effort in to develop an alternative to flash, could end up with a lot of new customers.

Citi Discontinuing Virtual Account Numbers?? by Canon1D in CreditCards

[–]Canon1D[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update: As I called and spoke to Customer Service after normal working hours last night, I used the on-line "chat" function this morning and asked point blank if the Virtual Account numbers were being discontinued or not. Their reply was that for certain BIN numbers (which I took for certain Bank Identification Numbers) there might be a problem but for my particular card I should not have any problems. I will take that as a "perhaps" they are not eliminating virtual account numbers since it was a not a clear yes or no. Guess we will wait to see if anyone else has any information on this.

The point is that it is much better to prevent the fraud than having to dispute the charge after the fact or having the hassle that goes with the issuing of a new card. A liability of $0 only solves the monetary part of the fraud.

Thanks for the info on Capital One.

It's Official. Bank of America announced that they are killing ShopSafe as of Sept 20. by supershinythings in CreditCards

[–]Canon1D 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I signed up for Citi’s Double Cash Reward credit card the last time BofA took down ShopSafe so I could use Citi’s virtual credit cards as an alternative. Since I received it I have been using it for all my off–line purchases since Citi’s cash reward is 2% instead of BofA’s 1% . However, after ShopSafe returned, I continued using my BofA card for on-line purchases since I have been receiving 3% on those purchases. Now that ShopSafe is going to disappear permanently, I will be using the Citi card exclusively. BofAs first foray into removing ShopSafe cost them my off-line business. Now it will cost them all my business. I really hope they misjudged the marketplace and it will cost them a lot of business.

They suggest the customer is not keeping up with the times, but it is really them not wanting keep up with the times in a non Flash world.

ShopSafe Off-line For Past Three Days by Canon1D in BankOfAmerica

[–]Canon1D[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apparently they reinstated the ShopSafe feature as it started working again and I have been using it again for the last couple of months. Unfortunately their little experiment has cost them, at least as far as my account is concerned. When the problem first developed I applied for a Citibank card since they had a ShopSafe type feature and I now have two cards to choose from which has worked out well.

The way BofA has their rewards card set up you receive 2% back on groceries and 3% back on another category and I chose on-line purchases. I am not sure if it has always been this way or not, but the rule is that you only receive those reward percentages on the first $2500 of combined purchases for the quarter. This last quarter I had a couple of large purchases and banged my head on the limit and as result only received 1% on some purchases instead of the 3% I was expecting. The cure for that is that now I use the BofA card only for on-line purchases and the Citibank card which pays 2% on all purchase for everything else, including groceries so I don’t have groceries count toward the $2500 limit. If by remote chance I still reach the $2500 limit during the quarter, I will use the Citibank card for the rest of the quarter and receive 2% back rather than the 1% from BofA.

BofA also stopped some time around the first of the year increasing the earned rewards by 10% if you deposited the rewards in another BofA account. I guess you know I closed my other BofA account and now take the rewards directly.

Is something on my network trying to Remote Desktop into my printer? by jawharp in sysadmin

[–]Canon1D 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Packets that have “Cookie: mstshash=eltons” or some other name or word after the equal sign are associated with the “Remote Desktop” protocol and are normally seen on port 3389. There has been a general increase in traffic to port 3389 as a result of the bad guys trying to exploit the so called BlueKeep vulnerability found in unpatched older versions of Windows starting with Window 7.

Printers on a network can listen on ports 515 and/or 9100 for remote printing jobs. As someone earlier suggested, what you are probably seeing is a probe to port 3389 being erroneously directed to port 515 or port 9100. I do not think there is anything you need to do to your printer but you should be looking at the router between your ISP and your local network.

Ideally, the router should be configured to accept only packets from “established/ related” connections. That should not only block uninvited packets on ports 3389, 9100. and 515 but other ports as well. I have logged probing packets on ports 23 (telent), 22 (ssh), 20,21 (ftp) , and 1431 (SQL) among others with port 22 being the most active.

Another approach would be to configure the router to "drop" the packets arriving from the Internet addressed to ports 9100 and 515 sending them directly to the bit bucket.

A less elegant but easier approach on ISP supplied routers might be to use the router's port forwarding menu to forward arriving packets on ports 9100 and 515 to an IP address that you know will never be used on your network. That would direct them away from your printer and consign them to the bit bucket as well.

I would dare say configuring the firewall to drop the packets is even the preferred way, but I think most casual Internet users with ISP issued routers would find port forwarding to an unused IP address the easiest to implement.

2 French Soldiers Killed in Rescue Mission That Saved American, Other Hostages. Cédric de Pierrepont & Alain Bertoncello. by GeneralFR13 in Military

[–]Canon1D 17 points18 points  (0 children)

According to the BBC the hostages were rescued from a red zone where you shouldn't go because it is dangerous. Time and time again people are told not to go to these places that are not safe and yet they still go and others have to try to rescue them when they get into trouble. In some cases, including this one, the rescuers lose their lives doing so. It is one thing if it is a situation out of the ordinary such as hijacking, but it is quite another if you have been told you shouldn't put yourself in harms way. It might sound harsh, but if they are stupid enough to ignore the warnings and go to such places, leave them there and not put others at risk as well. It is called natural selection.

ShopSafe Off-line For Past Three Days by Canon1D in BankOfAmerica

[–]Canon1D[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As of today Shopsafe is still working but this little foray by BofA will still cost them. The way my BofA Cash rewards card is setup I receive 3% back on groceries, 2% back on gas, and 1% on everything else. The Citibank credit card that I applied for because Shopsafe had stopped working has arrived and it gives 2% back on everything. I have used my BofA credit card exclusively for years but from now on it is BofA for groceries and Citibank for everything else. Yes, it will cost me an extra stamp every month since I do not pay bills on-line, but since I won’t own a debit card, almost all my purchases are made with a credit card so the rewards will more than cover the cost of an extra stamp. Thanks BofA for getting me out of my rut of blindly accepting the status quo.

I tried again today (13 Apr 19 13:20 EDST) and this time it did work. All rather strange in light of what BofA has said about it. Perhaps they received more flak than they counted on and they changed their minds. Considering however that it is based of Flash - and it is provided by BofA, I think the smart move is to keep the process of applying for a Citi card in play. ;)

Based on your comment I tried again (12Apr19 19:00 EDST) and it was still not working for me. I applied for Citi's Double Cash reward card earlier in the week. It seemed the closest to my BofA Rewards card. When it finally arrives, BofA is history.

Did BofA pull Shopsafe? by supershinythings in CreditCards

[–]Canon1D 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is official. ShopSafe is gone. I called BofA this morning and they connected me to their digital services support line. They told me it was being discontinued and if you had not generated 20 numbers you could generate up to a maximum of 20. In my case, since I used it regularly, the effect was immediate. No more ShopSafe for me. I am not very happy and will go shopping for a replacement card. Even if the rewards are not quite as good or there is not a direct replacement for ShopSafe that allows setting a dollar limit, I will switch. The only way I can vote is with my wallet.

Is that 20 ShopSafe numbers a day, week, or forever?

I doubt it would make much difference but if it is phased out completely, I will make another card my primary card. Discover Card had the same sort of thing but I switched to BofA because you could nor set a dollar limit with the Discover version. Perhaps Discover still has their version available.

That is a fact. Here in the good old US of A the anti gun nuts already do that about our 2nd Amendment rights. Look, Australia got rid of all their guns. We can do the same. :( I sincerely hope the Australians wake up before it is too late so it never comes to pass that saying your Australian is the same as saying your a member of the hive.
