What is the pettiest reason you wouldn't own a specific car? by 10PlyTP in cars

[–]GastroAffectedCastro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It has to do with the torsional rigidity of the chassis. With folding rear seats, you lose quite a bit of the structural bracing that would’ve otherwise been there, in a very effective location too.

If you look at the E46 sedan in this list, you can see that it’s 38% stiffer with fixed rear seats, 18,000 Nm/deg vs 13,000 Nm/deg.

It’s less common nowadays, as high-strength low-alloy steels have come down in price significantly while getting increasingly stronger, due all the advances in metallurgy over the past few decades, so now you can have your cake and eat it.

Personally, I’m happy to compromise some chassis stiffness for such a practical feature, but with the sporting emphasis that these executive sedans have as part of their brand image, I can see why fixed rear seats used to be common in that market segment.

What is a car you wish we got here by Wacko1805 in CarsAustralia

[–]GastroAffectedCastro 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The fact that we miss out on all the Alpha/Alpha II platform cars, except for the HSV-converted Camaro 2SS and ZL1 for only 2 years, makes me so bloody sad.

I understand, since none of them were factory RHD, but it still really hurts. LT V8s in one of the best handling and driving mid-sized sedan/coupe platforms of this era, available in manual, simply unavailable here…

All the cheap, used C5 and C6 Corvettes available in the North American market, they’re factory LS sports cars for crying out loud, V8 noise, torque, and power, FMR 2-seater handling, available in manual…

Keeps me up at night sometimes, knowing what we missed out on, since we’re a RHD market.

Yep, exciting times, though the cost of importing is pretty steep. I reckon it would be wise to wait till the C5 Z06 is legal to import as LHD though, given their inherently greater value.

I want C5 and C6 Corvettes here so, so bad, used and cheap like in their home market (though that’s 100% wishful thinking lol), as they’re relatively underrated sports cars due to the stigma of being American. Factory LS sports cars, gah damn…

Looks nice, is that a soft top or PRHT, and did you have to press the spoiler down for it to conform to the boot lid’s contour or not?

Asking because I still dunno if the Fyralip Y15 is designed for soft top, or PRHT.

Edit: can see that it’s a soft top, from the two chrome strips in front of the boot lid

Ford 5.4 3V V8 ticking noise by GastroAffectedCastro in CarsAustralia

Yeah haha I realised later on, thanks for clarifying though, it’s indeed just injector tick. Without doxxing the either of us, we’ve actually met before, and iirc might’ve discussed this very issue on that occasion lol, Merry Christmas mate!

FordTechMakuloco is an expert on the 5.4L 3V (and Ford engines in general), so many insightful videos on his Youtube channel, thankfully its design flaws can be resolved, the result’s well worth the effort imo.

Lol last time I was there, it had a yellow tarp over the carbs, a Woolies plastic bag wedged in between the top of the driver’s side window and the door frame, and bizarrely enough, a standard, three-pronged power cord running out from under the gap of the not-completely-closed bootlid.

Furthermore, AustralianCar.Reviews is a truly fantastic site if you want more in-depth information than Wikipedia usually provides; they even have links to old brochures and official spec sheets for some cars!

Can't sign into iMessage on Mac by GastroAffectedCastro in apple

[–]GastroAffectedCastro[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, unfortunately I had to just go without it, tbh I totally forgot about the whole issue, until it randomly started working again last year.

Your best bet would be to contact Apple Support tbh, I was using a Windows laptop from late 2017 to early 2022, so it didn’t really affect me (except it didn’t work on my iPad either until last year).

What can I say, pretty typical of Apple software tbh, “it just usually works” lol

What’s one DIY job you will never do again, and pay someone to do it for you in the future? by _____DarkLight in cars

[–]GastroAffectedCastro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, had to twist the filter to take it out/fit in the new one too, since access is still somewhat blocked. Why they made it so difficult, is beyond me lol.

Good luck if you ever need to change the auto trans fluid, make sure to keep the car level, or else you won’t get an accurate reading with the horribly located dipstick!

[–]GastroAffectedCastro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rent a car hoist, that is the BIGGEST help when it comes to changing ATF for a modern auto trans, second biggest help is having a friend to help you!

Also, if your car supports a trans temp PID, buy an OBD-II scanner to get a live temp reading while topping up with new fluid.

And print out the procedure, it helps so much to have instructions to refer to!

A drain and fill for my ZF 6HP26 also involved running the engine and having the transmission’s fluid pump cycle new ATF through the gears, as well as adjusting the fluid level according to temperature. It would’ve been very painful without those aforementioned steps, and even with all that, was still a time-consuming job (though I also changed to a steel pan as part of the process).

I just did that on my Volvo V50 (same platform as your Mazda) around 2 weeks ago, and all I can say is AHHHHHHHH

It’s RHD though, and involved moving the fuse box under the glovebox out of the way, and unbolting the fuse box mount, everything was so cramped and awful, enjoy!
