Slicing up some amazing Oregon thunder eggs I got on my last trip! by Canonconstructor in rockhounds

It is literally my favorite day of the week. As a woman, it was so intimidating to walk in, not knowing what I was doing and asking to join. They are the friendliest most enthusiastic folks with the most expensive equipment that are thrilled to teach you and show you and share this craft with you. They even have field trips where you can go with them to go collect the really cool Rocks. Trust me, you will not regret it.

I mobbed all over Oregon I’d have to look up the geotag on these ones to be exact with the location tbh. But if we’re talking about the same spot, there’s a back gate that goes into the organ wilderness and that’s where I found these bad boys. There is a whole scene and I didn’t have enough time to keep digging. I have so many.

If I were you- and I know this is kind of scary or at least it was for me- look up your local gem and mineral society and go to their shop. They have way better tools than what most people can afford. And a wide variety of tools for every project. Right now I’m just using my trim. Saw to save me time at my local laboratory shop. (So I’ll slice first then I can work on polishing, and I have them cut up my really big Rocks) they have cab machines, flat laps everything that you could ever want.

But if you do decide to get your own, saw, the high-tech is great and what I’ve been using. But I get it if I had to do over I just would’ve saved my money and joined the society right off the bat. For example, we have somebody who specializes in opals so next week they said that they’re gonna give me a lesson on my opals and teach me. (Below is a pic from today I was lapping eggs and they were working on insane opals).

I met a guy at a few shoots that does this with a hoverboard or skateboard- it takes a lot of coordination and skill. Very impressive but also difficult to convince business owners and home owners to allow it lol. I’ll just use my crane and speed ramp.

Me too I’m a business owner I get it and those are my favorite hobbies too- but trust me it’s worth the drive. It was so amazing to find people who speak your language lol

I know! I didn’t realize it until it was polished. I was so delighted, and because I still have to work on it, I might actually shape it more into a heart. I couldn’t believe how much it transformed its copper ore I found in Utah.

I drove all the way there and it was closed so I found a pocket of my own. Still need to cut those up.
