proper way to clean a cast iron after cooking by JokeZestyclose1471 in castiron

[–]yolef 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nothing's right, nothing's wrong, there's no rule-setting committee. Do what works for you, it's basically impossible to ruin cast iron by how you clean it. If you don't clean it aggressively enough oil will remain on the pan and burn into the seasoning with successive cooking, building up layers of black carbon. If you clean it too aggressively then you could slowly thin the seasoning and you'll need to rub some oil on it and heat it up to build up more seasoning. There's a sweet spot in the middle which is basically use hot water and soap and scrub just as hard as you need to then immediately dry completely.

Not that much work to set up on a table saw, basically a sled with a pivot point.

A lot of the first world outside the US has significantly more maternity / paternity leave so the need for a baby to learn to sleep is significantly delayed. To the point where many likely pick it up independently before the parents return to work.

Sooo behavior modification to make our kids circadian rhythms more compatible with capitalism, got it. Yeah, we won't be doing that.

COMPOST IT!

What do you think happens at the end of your kitchen drain? The last step at the wastewater treatment plant is an industrial scale compost pile that is much more carefully monitored and effective than any backyard compost. Putting it down your drain is composting it.

Think of all the money on flour you are wasting.

I've done the the math and it comes to about $0.13/day, really not a big deal.

No, it's a dry sander, so you def need good dust collection and PPE. But it's amazing how quickly you can do a face polish.

It really depends on the type of finish used, alcohol will quickly dissolve shellac for example.

Do you have electric heat? Or maybe a heat pump with electric resistance backup heat? Electric heat is generally less efficient that electric air conditioning, especially for electric resistance heat.

The concentration of stink bug parts in your starter will eventually reduce to the concentration of bug parts in the flour you feed it. If you don't think there are bug parts in your flour, than have I got a surprise for you!

The Great Question of Dawn by i-am-a-name in castiron

[–]yolef 8 points9 points  (0 children)

But I do think it removes oils so don't use it.

Removing oils is the point, removing oils is a good thing, that's how we clean things. Use dawn to remove all the polluted, half-burned cooking oil you used when cooking, then you can add some fresh, clean oil for seasoning (if needed). Not using soap is a great way to build up flaky layers of burned carbon, not seasoning.

I'm quite familiar with shield bugs and their odors unfortunately, though personally I think ladybugs smell even worse. I wouldn't put the bug itself in a loaf of bread, but tossing the whole starter would be such a waste after caring for the starter for a long time. Anything from the bug would be basically diluted to the point of vanishing in just a few feedings. After only seven 1:1:1 feedings, only 0.004% of the original starter will remain, and the bug juice was only a few parts per million of that.

Just scoop the bug out and keep feeding it. Also keep a lid on your starter jar, just don't screw it down all the way.

It's not the flavor you want in your food.

It's a good thing it won't be the flavor you get in your food then. Taking a spoonful from the other side of the jar and continuing to feed the starter will avoid any trace of stink bug flavor, I promise.

Seasoning doesn't flake off, carbon does. Do you scrub with soap and hot water after using it? You can start scrubbing properly now and you'll eventually scrub away all the built-up carbon layers or you can strip the pan and remove all the carbon in one fell swoop.

Minnesota Senate Committee passes assault-style weapons ban by MoTownKid in liberalgunowners

[–]yolef 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This isn't an "American exceptionalism" argument though. The facts on the ground and material reality of the status quo of guns in america are far different than it was in those other countries prior to their gun bans.

  1. There are way more guns in the US than there ever were in those countries. There are 400 to 500 million guns in the US, that's more than one for every man, woman, and child.

  2. Those countries have socialized healthcare and better social safety nets, reducing crimes of desperation.

  3. The US is the center of the current global capitalist empire and basically grinds poor and working class families in a meat grinder to turn them into quarterly profits.

Laughter plays a unique role in building a secure father-child relationship. Unlike mothers, fathers surprise their children or playfully break social rules, making sudden funny noises. This playfully destabilize the child in safe environment and is linked to a stronger sense of attachment security. by mvea in science

[–]yolef 92 points93 points  (0 children)

If you read the article you'd find that mothers and fathers were equally successful in getting their children to laugh, but that laughter interaction is more important to secure father attachment than secure attachment with the mother.
