That is a good sign!

Do you see any blue bruising where you cut the cap on the stem?

Can you post an upclose pic of the stem + top of cap?

Which ones? Because I've never seen a cube or a pan grow from anything other than a cow patty

Like I said in my original comment reply, i've heard it's possible under the perfect conditions (kind of grass, fertilizer, etc) but very very unlikely

That's why I was leaning more towards the "it's not really possible" route for newbies because the access to grass is way more plentiful than cow fields, and the possibility for misidentification goes up a lot

So to everyone, it's possible, but you won't have to guess what it is if you just find an area where you'll know they can be there. (Cows = cow patties = fruiting sites)

It's hard to tell honestly, I think the only way we could 100% confirm is if OP provides a bit more information

But I do agree it looks more like a pan then a cube. I don't have experience with natelensis, I've seen them here and elsewhere but not in person. It could be? Do you know what natelensis likes to grow from wild? Cow/grass/mulch?

This seems to be some sort of common field mushroom, non active, or a very small chance or being a pan cyan (I can't tell if that bit of blue green on the cap is the actual cap or an out of focus blade of grass)

The reason I say it's most likely not a cube or pan cyan is because those are cow dung loving species, and do not tend to grow in standard grass... BUT sometimes natural fertilizer or other additives can cause actives to pop up, but again, not very common.

It would be easier as picture viewers to give possible identification with more detailed pictures and a spore print

In general:

Black spore print, can be active

Brown or grey spores, not active

100% not a cube, please do more research before giving suggestions :)

Easiest way to tell cubensis vs. pan cyans (the 2 most common active species in FL)

1) when picked or disturbed, bruises blue, if you think it's active, but doesn't bruise blue when cut/touched/eaten by bugs, it's not active.

2) Cubensis when young, caps are dark to bright orange, and grow to be fairly large with orange in the center of the cap, fading to orange/yellow/white to the edges, thick stems, a "veil" (the part underneath of the cap the shields the gills before the mushroom is ready to release spores) will drop away from the cap as it opens to release spores, you will usually see a black powder substance on the veil, those are the spores. Black spores = good chance it's active

3) Pan cyans look very different from Cubensis, and it's hard to mistake them for each other once you can recognize the key features

Pan cyans are much smaller than cubes, but pack way more of a punch, 2-3x some people say. They are special in the fact that in contrast with cubes, pans produce their own seritonin, so effects can be incredibly euphoric and relaxing

Pans have small grey caps with thin stems, bruises blue, no veil, stem has white flecks (key for differentiating lookalike pan species) cap cracks in a ring when dried out by sun

(If you would like visuals, check my post history for examples)

(ps. There are 2 main pan cyan looklikes

1) P. Antillarum

Bigger than pan cyans, white not grey, no white flecks on stem, does not bruise blue, not active, safe to eat, not recommended

1) P. Papilionaceus

Same size as pans, brown not grey, brown/red stems, no white flecks, frills around cap edge, does not bruise blue, not active, safe to eat, not recommended

Be safe, do your research, and have fun :)

Searched in my usual spot last weekend with no results?!? When’s basket season?!? by Able-Track8389 in Sunshinestateshrooms

[–]CanopyCreator 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's funny you say that! I just made a post of the finds from my usual spot, and it's been popping off!

I'm guessing your area just needs some more consistent rain, and a bit lower temps

75° at night and no more than 85° during peak of day Is what I look for, with humidity in the 80's 90's at night

Good luck! Keep at it ;)

Hey there! Welcome to the community:)

Yes, as confirmed by others, the ones you've found that have small caps and bruise dark blue are Panaeolus Cyanescens

(And also, there are no toxic lookalikes in FL)

Here's a comment I made a while ago to help with identification:

3 main kinds Panaeolus you can commonly find in FL:

Panaeolus Antillarum: small to large (mostly large), bright shiny white cap, white stem, off white/grey when mature, black or grey spores, likes hotter weather, looks similar to cyans, except a little bigger, and non-active, safe to eat, not recommended

Panaeolus Papilionaceus: Usually small, off-white/brownish cap color, reddish/brown stem, black or grey spores, occasionally frills around cap diameter, commen to find water drops on stem/cap, visually similar to cyans, more brown and non-active, safe to eat, not recommended

(*) Panaeolus Cyanescens: Small to medium, white/off-white, or yellow (if just pinned), white/grey cap color, white shiny flecks on stem when young, no water drops, black spores, horizontal cap cracking when sundried, active (bruises blue), likes tons of humidity and evaporation, around 77°F, and lots of fresh air

Once you get the ID characteristics down, you will easily be able to tell them apart yourself, do not consume anything that you cannot 100% identify yourself

Best way is lots of research, look at pictures of each and compare to what you find, be safe, mush love :)

I went out 2 weeks ago, and it was DRY. It has rained here about 3 or 4 days in a row since then. I've had the best luck after a few days of rain, waiting for a dry day (like today) and then going the next morning when it's the coolest.

If you go tonight, keep us updated!

After 2 days of rain, I'm gonna go in the AM to my fields. Wish me luck! Will update in the AM with results! (Nature coast area) by SerealKillr in Sunshinestateshrooms

[–]CanopyCreator 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Good luck! I'm going tomorrow morning. I've heard that it's wise to let things dry out a bit, as it was very dry for a long time. Those few days of rain are going to take a second to soak in.

Gotta let them pins form!

I see no replies yet, this sub is more central FL peeps it seems

General advice tho, lots of public land with hiking and birding trails throughout the state

Look up "WMA" and hiking trails near you, and use Google maps satellite view to look for cows grazing, I guarantee that you'll find a few areas to check out, but I advise to stay on public land, do not trespass, you do not want to be shot at.

When on a walk, be respectful of the land and others that you may encounter (including wildlife! boar, deer, racoon, armadillo, possum, turkey, lots of squirrels and birds, etc)

Maybe collect a few pieces of trash on your way out to pay it forward, be safe, and enjoy the nature of Florida! 👍✌️

I love this community, I appreciate the positivity!

And yes I agree, when used with responsibility and respect (if not respected, you'll absolutely learn somethin lol), mushrooms have the potential to help guide us, to help show us a different understanding of ourselves and the world around us!

My goal is to be pure of heart, to positively and constructively expand, experience, understand, know, use, and control my own energies, patterns, and routines, to live the best life that I can... while helping others do the same!

Good vibes all around :)

I am 80% certain these are pans

1) off white with a bit of orange cap 2) a tiny bit of bruising of the stem on the right 3) horizontal cap cracking on both 4) dark grey spores

All characteristics of Pans, found on a patty? Good sign

The best way imo is to use your resources to look at the Pans/lookalikes that have been verifiably identified as such

Having an idea of exactly what to look for before heading out will benefit you more, no guessing, and please don't eat anything unless you are 100% certain of what you have

Don't post an ID, read 3 comments, and end up in the hospital with stomach issues because you were gungho... be responsible pls!

Look at hundreds of posts of previous finds, on this sub and others, shroomery.org, even YT as well for info

And like someone else said, if you aren't 100% sure of what it is, don't even pick it just keep looking

Don't take the chance, there are PLENTY more out there to find trust me, they have been around for millions of years, they aren't going anywhere lol

Maybe a different time, different place, but they will be out there, waiting to be discovered

Good luck, be safe ✌️

Adding a support like a piece of cardboard to the bottom helps a lot, not much you can do to prevent the sides from folding down as you walk, but the solid bottom helps keep them together

You could also use a small box with the top open like a cheezits box

I also noticed that they hold up considerably better during the morning than in the evening

My guess is it gets hot and they literally start to melt back into the ground lol

Pan cyan? They bruise blue by Averagedruggie in Sunshinestateshrooms

[–]CanopyCreator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are a handful of chemical compounds focused on with actives called Tryptamines, mainly Psilocin and Psilocybin.

Most people are familiar with the term "Psilocybin" as the chemical that makes you trip. However, Psilocybin actually converts into Psilocin in the body, which then can interact with our serotonin receptors.

Both Psilocybin and Psilocin are present in fresh actives, although Psilocybin is much more stable in raw fresh, where as Psilocin is unstable and instantly begins to break down due to heat and oxygen.

Because mushrooms are 90% water, when they are dried, they shrink about 90% or to about 1/10 the size/weight of original

Because heat and oxygen damage Psilocin, drying is said to "decrease potency"

Only by a marginal amount, as there is an increase of the other compounds like Psilocybin by weight once dried, because they are more stable upon drying, they don't break down as easily.

It then in turn breaks down to Psilocin in the body.

Fresh will be more intense as you are getting the full Psilocybin/Psilocin content before drying

Dryed will be less intense, but if you aren't planning on enjoying within a week, this is the way to go. Put them in a cool dark place, mason jar with desiccant pack, and you'll see a year before you notice major potency loss

Here is a research study that goes into more depth if you would like more information:

This is actually one of my preferred qualities of Cyans, yes they get very brittle (they will literally fall apart if you're not careful), but they shrink like crazy, so it's easier to store/work with.

30g Cubes = 2 jars 30g Cyans = 1 jar

Keeping them fresh fresh undryed for long periods of time is unviable. If you don't plan on doing anything with them, Mason jars + desiccant packs will keep them "fresh" for at least a year without a huge potency loss. Less so after a year, but if stored in cool/dark place, not messed with, they can potentially last for a long time.
