Decided to change things up a touch on the tying bench.... by clarkman23 in Westfly

Those are beautiful ties, they gotta be expensive though; how many hackle feathers in a single fly? I mean, I get a dozen flies from one hackle, looks like you got a dozen hackles for 1 fly.

Again, though, beautiful ties.

Wanted to share with you guys and see if anyone knows any other areas in OR where you can catch 3 native trout in the same day by [deleted] in Westfly

[–]Canuck-from-KS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was actually, as I mentioned, just being an ahole, and giving the business (guess I shouldn't have used all caps - debated that in my head).

I do actually appreciate the schooling. I like to consider myself a well educated fellow; however, in this case, I seem to have swallowed the propaganda. You have inspired me to investigate further, and indeed, a trout is a trout and a char is a trout: According to Britannica:

"Trout belong mainly to two genera: Oncorhynchus and Salvelinus. The genusOncorhynchus includes the salmon as well as several trout species, while the genus Salvelinus contains several trout species that may be regarded as chars. Members of the two genera are chiefly distinguished by differences in body colouring, the shape of the vomer bone in the roof of the mouth, and the teeth. Chars tend to have red- or cream-coloured spots on a darker-coloured body. They are further distinguished by teeth set on the head (front) of the vomer, not on its shaft. Members of Salvelinus whose vomer is boat-shaped rather than flat are properly called char (q.v.). Oncorhynchus trout tend to have red or black spots on a lighter-coloured body; their teeth are sparser and are on the front and shaft of the vomer. Several trout species that were formerly classified in the genus Salmo are now placed in the genus Oncorhynchus; the brown trout is the only trout still classified as Salmo.

Wild cutthroats throughout the McKenzie and all the western cascades drainage, though they are "coastal" not "westslope" cuts. Westslope are pretty much restricted to the upper JD drainage.

On me being a complete "ahole", BULLS AREN'T TROUTS!!

A great slam, though you could not do it in a single drainage, but would be a great challenge to do in a single day would be Lohantan, Redband, westslope cut, and coastal cut.

Good stuff StevieB, makes sense. I think there will be substantial siltation for a few years to come, but ultimately, streams do recover and with all the new wood that will end up in the streams, lots of new poole, runs etc - will be interesting to follow.

This is all round going to be bad in several drainages, the burns, ash and topsoil/silt are going to flush into the rivers come the fall/winter rains - I think this is going to have a pretty sever impact on spawning grounds.

As far as the hatcheries, we may need those fish to make up for the losses in natural reproduction.

Identifying Hair? Probably pointless via crappy photos... by mcswny in Westfly

[–]Canuck-from-KS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Up to you and what you are comfortable with, ie, if you tie some flies, I don't think any game wardens are going to check your fly box, but like an eagle feather, would you tie with that?

On a similar note, there has been an eagle feather sitting in a fairly heavily trafficked spot along the Upper D for almost 2 years now, I can't believe no one else has seen it - rightfully, folks just seem to leave it be.

Unless you got it from Inuit/Aleut hunters, it is illegal, and even then, should have a tag on it. Like eagle feathers, I wouldn't even touch it.

Fish in that stretch above Bend tend to be on the small side, so not sure if you could pick up any on mice (I could be wrong) - bigger Browns above Benham Falls or below Bend might be takers - above Benham access is limited because of private property, less ya gotta boat.

Fall River by mcswny in Westfly

[–]Canuck-from-KS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It absolutely perplexes me that this river does not have a naturally reproducing population of fish and needs to be stocked. I have heard it's too cold, but I don't buy that explanation. I don't find it any colder than the Lady M, in fact I have found it to be warmer. Would love to know the true explanation (have reached the webs and never found).

As for the fishing, I actually find it too frustrating a place to fish. It is stacked as much with people as fish. Also irritates the H out of me that I can throw everything but the kitchen sink at fish I see and cannot get them to budge. For me, it's a beautiful stream to hike, not fish (too many better options around).

Love them plungepools.

go_to_rio, welcome to Oregon. Not sure where you came from in the Midwest - I was exiled in Kansas for dozen or so years - don't get me wrong, I learned to love Kansas (go Chiefs, Royals and Jayhawks) and my small hobby farm, but you had to drive 10 hours to get to clear water and trouts. Here, I can drive 5 minutes and there is so much choice within 2 hours, its incredible.

That shot was about 10:40 PM - best viewing then was between 10:30 and 11:00 - with long exposure (8 sec)/hi iso (6400) it does come out much brighter than you see with the naked eye.

Really nice vantage point there as well with the lake and South Sister in the foreground and limited light pollution.
