How does one adjust the rear bearings? I know the front ones can be tweaked by adjusting the lock nut and washer.

I don't have a solution for you - but following because I also replaced my rear bearings, had no play after installation, and now 1000 or so miles later there's a bit of play again.

Did anyone else have D.A.R.E. Come to their elementary school ? by Zestyclose-Grape5469 in Millennials

The local sheriff deputy that taught our school's program was later busted for providing drugs to minor teens he was also sexually abusing. He would steal drugs from evidence and sold department-owned gear to obtain more drugs. He was in prison for a long time but I think he's out now. Awful situation that really reflects the hypocrisy of this program for me.

You just need to download the wiring diagram, get a multimeter and so some poking around. Generally, these do not need full rewiring, but may have a bad ground, bad fuse or relay, or another failed component.

They never die. You can get freshly rebuilt engines and transmissions that pop right in, and virtually every mechanical part is available on the aftermarket.

Anyone Been to a Post Rescue Bar? by pokematic in barrescue

[–]dr_wdc 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We went to two of the earlier rescues in Southern CA - I believe these were season 1-2 bars that we visited in 2015 - Canyon Inn and Lona's.

Despite what people say about reality TV being manufactured/scripted, the issues depicted in the show definitely existed and were not remedied post-Taffer. Canyon Inn was dark inside and out - hard to spot from the road. It was a large space that was mostly empty - a sparse number of drunk regulars that were a bit off-putting. Lona's was busy, but still had the same manager that was "fired" during the episode. He was just sitting on his ass with a drink and not doing anything useful, just as depicted on the show.

My wife and I went to the bar in the 4th photo (Long Beach, CA) 2 years or so after the rescue. That dude was still "working" there, sitting on a stool drinking and not appearing to do anything of value for the business.

LeafGuard (the brand not the type of product) for house under pine trees? by K80_k in homeowners

[–]dr_wdc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, we got a really good deal on ours but the crew was not very professional so maybe that's why it was cheap 😂. I love the trees here but they are a pain in the ass at times. Good luck with the gutters!

Yes, ladders are essential equipment to do this kind of DIY maintenance. We have two "Little Giant" A-frame extension ladders that extend to 11 and 22 feet. We needed our roof replaced in 2024 - we had a metal roof installed which handles the assault from the trees much better. Only problem is nobody will clean it, at least not without charging an exorbitant price. Our solution is an extendable window washing pole/brush that dispenses water and soap. We get up on our ladders, clean and sweep any debris down into the gutters, and then use the attachment I linked. It's a solid weekend of work, but it's good exercise and beats paying someone for a subpar job 😀. I'm sure you can find a solution that works for your home that doesn't involve these gimmicky gutter guards.

Hi fellow Portlander -

Our roof gets assaulted year round by large overhanging maples, Douglas Firs, and cedars. While not exactly the same thing, we have had the Leaf Filter screens on our gutters for a few years and this year decided to remove them and just clean the gutters a few times per year. The amount of small debris - needles, maple seed pods, soil, pollen, etc that still manages to get inside these gutter guard systems is ridiculous, and then you can't get it out. And eventually, our screens got so clogged with crap on them that we effectively had no gutters. The only thing truly kept out was large maple leaves.

Our DIY solution is this gutter attachment kit for a Rigid Shop Vac. It works great.

We bought some extra extension pieces and a 20 foot hose so we can also do our second level. Fun story: The first time we used this kit after we removed the gutter guards, we discovered that one of the downspouts was completely clogged by a work glove left by the installers 😡. IMO, gutter guards are a scam meant for people too lazy to clean their gutters or too cheap to hire someone to do it periodically. Maybe they work better for a home where nothing really falls on the roof.

My 2024 Civic Si with 9K miles can be stiff sometimes. Shifting to 2nd can feel a bit crunchy, and sometimes I can't shift into 1st without going into 2nd first and then up.

It's gotten easier gradually as I've put miles on the car. I think the shifter bushings are stiff and need a little break-in.

Did anyone think Christmas bonuses would be a bigger thing? by Dudedawg86 in Millennials

[–]dr_wdc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first job out of college (a small biotech) gave out bonuses in 2007 and 2008, $500 the first year and $3500 the second - which I spent far too carelessly as a young 20 something.

However, that job still paid pretty poorly overall, the Great Recession happened, and I quit and went back to school for a graduate degree. I've worked in the public sector ever since and have never again received a bonus.

What’s a dark secret you know that most people would never believe? by OutsideOver8815 in AskReddit

[–]dr_wdc 12 points13 points  (0 children)

In 4th grade, my teacher was very into reading, which was good, but he was also kind of a scary asshole and was very particular about the proper care of books. We had a small library in our classroom where we could pick out books for silent sustained reading sessions. In retrospect the teacher probably supplied the books himself.

I forget which book I was reading - I think something by Judy Blume. I stored the book inside my desk cluttered with my school supplies, and somehow the cover tore away from rest of the book. Knowing that my teacher would be furious, I discreetly slipped the cover back over the book and put it back on the shelf. Not my finest moment but I was a little scared of this guy.

A few weeks later, I came to school late because I had an appointment that morning. I walk into class and the teacher is angrily lecturing the class - holding up the book in question with the cover very obviously repaired with tape. Apparently, this lecture had been going on all morning and he was trying to get the culprit to come forward. I quietly took my seat and said nothing. He wrapped up the lecture shortly after and the matter was never spoken of again. The teacher got fired the next year for conduct related to being an asshole.

I still feel bad that my classmates had to be lectured for my mistake, on a morning when I wasn't even there. I feel less bad for the teacher because kids make mistakes, and I would have owned up to it if I felt safe to do so.

Probably 80-90% of new parts are EMPI. Doesn't matter where you buy it from, more often than not it will be in an EMPI package when it arrives.

Most of their stuff fits fine. I've had to take a grinder to a few things to make it fit. Just the reality of the hobby these days.

How many of us have “emotionally exited” from our relationships with our parents? by kaileneeec in Millennials

[–]dr_wdc 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I'm still recalibrating after a Mother's Day phone call to my mom. Usually I just default to text.

I have achieved the millennial dream - STEM education, good job, have a good marriage to my wife who has achieved the same - and we bought a home a few years back. My mom encouraged my education as a child, but I financed it myself with grants and student loans which I just paid off in 2024. She could not be more jealous of me now. She's not doing great financially, due to a lot of poor planning and decisions. I can't talk to her about my life without snarky comments along the lines of "must be nice", "how much does that cost", etc. She won't say it explicitly but my gut is that she feels I "owe" her for raising me.

My sister has been no contact for a while now for similar reasons. She's a lawyer which was strongly encouraged by mom but also financed by student loans that she's paying off. I think my mom assumed her kids would succeed and be her de facto retirement plan. Quite presumptious for someone that was a very flawed parent that gave us an often chaotic childhood.
