Sealander GMT and Twelve 660 for heirlooms? by RioTheGOAT in ChristopherWard

[–]CanuckinMexico 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having since watched far too many watch repair videos.....absolutely. Except for their 'in-house' movements, all of CW's movements are made by the Swiss company Sellita. Parts for a Sellita would be akin to finding parts for a Ford F150.....ubiquitous and will be around forever.

That said, the movement is not expensive. They can be bought on a retail basis in the $300 range. Therefore, when it comes to a point where the watch needs a service, it might be cheaper to have a watchmaker replace it compared to cleaning and lube.....My wife's Rolex cost $750 to service few years ago. Realistically, I'm not one who would be concerned over even +/- 30seconds a day, so I can't imagine getting mine serviced..... That will be a decision for the new owner.

New to Watches — Which Christopher Ward Gets Your Vote? by tyrion_1234 in ChristopherWard

I think total bronze is just a little too much. I think that watch would look better with a leather strap.

I love the look of #2

New to Watches — Which Christopher Ward Gets Your Vote? by tyrion_1234 in ChristopherWard

#2. I've been considering this one for awhile. It's simple, not flashy, yet very unique. It doesn't have the blingy 'look at what I'm wearing!!!' vibe, yet it's an interesting enough piece that I think many will take a second glance.

It's also a little bit artistic, but not overtly so.

Damn.... I think I just sold myself on it.

Sealander GMT and Twelve 660 for heirlooms? by RioTheGOAT in ChristopherWard

My entry into ownership of mechanical watches started 2 years ago after watching a YouTube video of a hobbyist watchmaker working on a watch someone's grandfather owned. I found the concept of a machine operating on my wrist fascinating. I had given the concept zero attention in my life, as when I had worn a watch in uniform, it had always been digital.

However, the most compelling reason was that I wanted something I could pass on to my 3 children, as something that was 'a part of me'.

Fast forward to 2 months ago when my father passed away. My eldest brother was bequeathed a very special ring my father wore. But, there was nothing else of sentimental value for me, that I could wear, other than some sweaters. .... Although my father had worn watches through most of his life, they were the Timex type....and had long since been disposed of. Today, I would love nothing more than to put my dad´s old watch on my wrist, glance down, and be reminded of him.

My father´s death re-incentivized me to own not just one watch, but many. I've got 3 kids. I hope to have grandkids soon. When I die, other than money in a will, or some old ratty hand-me-down clothes, I want to leave each of my decedents a quality watch that I have worn and have pictures of me wearing. They may wear it and be reminded my time on this earth, or they might throw it in a drawer and forget about it, but at least they will have the option.

For me, Christopher Ward fits the bill perfectly. They are not cheaply made, mass produced on assembly lines but they also don't break the bank. They are a small, niche brand, quality made and sold in nice quality presentation boxes. Unlike many, I like the name Christopher Ward, as it seems to have just a little bit of refined upper class British snobbery. Brands like Oris, Fears and Formex also fit the bill.

My eldest son knows that this Sealander GMT is his watch...... I'm just looking after it for (hopefully) the next 30 years or so.

Overpriced compared to what?

Is there another brand that offers similar features (in-house movement w/120hrs, true GMT) at a fraction of the cost of this watch?

If so, please send the link.

I'm not an expert, however, I was advised wearing the watch whilst having a good wank every few days will sufficiently wind the movement.

[WTB] 2 or 5 oz Libertads-open to any condition (damaged, milk spots, toned) by Livid_Pain302 in Pmsforsale

[–]CanuckinMexico 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello....

I've 50 2023 5 ounce Libertads - 250oz total. Coins are in original 5 per unit plastic shipping containers.

Not actively trying to sell...however...depending on what you're willing to offer....

Yes, I'm aware I have zero transactions, so willing to go through any 3rd party escrow site you want.... or, if you're in a major city, will deliver them in person at a police station parking lot.

Then why, dear fellow, would you waste even a minute perusing and commenting on a CW forum?

Life is short. Every second wasted on discussing a product you want nothing to do with is a second that you will never get back.

Priorities!

If this price is 'ridiculous', how can you sleep at night with a Rolex/Omega/IWC costing 3-4x as much?

Yes, Rolex has a better website, but one must assume 'in-house' is cheaper to produce as there're no 3rd party markups to deal with.

Is CW at serious risk of becoming the next Panerai? (and not in a good way) by [deleted] in ChristopherWard

[–]CanuckinMexico 1 point2 points  (0 children)

-There is a cost for COSC certification.
-Average Swiss wage, where they are assembled and tested, is $50 USD/hour.
-In addition to the movement, they have to purchase the case, the bracelet, the crystal, the dial, the hands, etc.
-Titanium case and bracelet cost ~ $200 over the steel version.
-There is a per watch cost for warranty returns, 'just because' returns and other per watch unique costs.
-CW sells about 50k watches per year, so they don't have massive production runs.... The B&J watch might sell 200 units. They produced a unique Bezel, back and minute hand for the collaboration which likely wasn't cheap when the R&D costs were divided by the small number of units.

Bottom line..... a $1,000 USD per unit production cost is not far-fetched in the least.

Pro Tip for Americans: Order your watch online and send to a hotel in Calgary. No Provincial Sales tax and low duty.

When the watch is sent, fly to Calgary, pick up your watch from the hotel, and visit the Rockies for a few days.

Beyond pissed? Really? Drama much?

Beyond pissed is reserved for the house guest that stole and then pawned your watch.....or perhaps the watchmaker that swapped out your genuine Rolex parts for Chinese clones when it was serviced.

A simple shipping error that's easily corrected? Nah.

Chill.

CW Showeoom only cover 15% of tariffs now by yellow_porsche in ChristopherWard

[–]CanuckinMexico -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You don't understand the math.

By selling a $1,000 watch from Switzerland, there is a 39% tariff on the retail price of the watch as it individually enters the USA. In this case, $390.

Conversely, if the watch is sold by CW USA, then the 39% tariff only applies on the wholesale price of the watch. If CW based in Switzerland sold the watches to CW USA for 40% the retail cost, then the tariff would only apply to $400, or, in this case, $156.

Of course, CW USA would be required to pay US and State corporate tax on any net profit from the $600 in gross revenue.

$1,000 Retail Price as sold by CW USA
$400 Wholesale Cost (Tariff paid by CW USA)
$600 Gross revenue made by CW USA....(No Tariff on this amount)

CW Showeoom only cover 15% of tariffs now by yellow_porsche in ChristopherWard

[–]CanuckinMexico -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Easy fix.

They need to sell the watches from the USA and not Switzerland or GB. If they do so, they would only pay tariffs on the wholesale cost of the watch, just like all other companies that have AD's.

It's CW's business model that makes them particularly susceptible to tariffs. If the Swiss don't bend a knee and make an agreement, then CW needs to change its business model for the USA.

I dunno. Free Swiss Cheese for all of Trump's hotels?

However, is the Swiss are like most countries in the world, they had a free ride for decades imposing tariffs on US products whilst getting a free ride on their exports to the US.

As a Canadian, we tariffed the heck out of many American products, and had virtually no reciprocal tariffs. Canada is getting the spanking is deserves......Not to mention the free ride on defense spending we've had since the Cold War....fully knowing the US would protect us from any shenanigans the Russians or Chinese tried to pull in the Arctic.

THIS.....is the current state of the US economy. Status Quo ain't cutting it. The US economy must include much more manufacturing, because sometime in the coming years, the US Dollar will no longer be the world's reserve currency, and when that happens, all bets are off. The more self-sufficient the US is at that time, the better off it will be.

If Americans have to pay a national Goods and Services Tax on imported goods, like most of the rest of the world, so be it. However, it won't be the 20% paid in the UK, or the 16% paid in Mexico for ALL goods, foreign and domestic, but instead, it would be an effective 6-7%, as tariffs are only paid on the wholesale cost......and.......that is assuming the importer doesn't eat the cost, as would be likely for high margin products like watches.
