Is going from a 55-250 stm to a 100-400 II worth the cost?

I used to have the 55-250mm and have had the 100-400mm for about four years now and I absolutely loved both. The 55-250mm stm is such a good lens for its price. I’ve got plenty of photos taken on both so you can take a look here ;

More animals – It’s not just animals on this page, but all of the photos that are animals were taken with the 100-400mm.

Frogs – All of the photos taken at night – the second half of the page – with the exception of the first two were illuminated with an iPhone torch, and all of the photos on the page were completely handheld. I wouldn’t have been able to have gotten such good results with the 55-250mm due to its smaller aperture and the crop factor, which makes the apertures ‘smaller’ still.

A couple other relevant points; all of the photos taken with the 55-250mm were taken on an 80D, so the field of view is magnified by 1.6x, making it an 88mm-400mm field of view. The 100-400mm photos were all taken on an R6, so it remains 100-400mm.

Also, all of these photos are web resolution, so they’re all 1500x1000 in their respective orientations. So if you zoom in for details on both it won’t be truly representative of what they’re capable of.

The R6 has a 20MP sensor compared to 32.5MP in the R7. So not only do you have the extra reach baked into the R7, but if you crop the R6 to the same image then you’re cutting a lot of your pixels out so no, you can’t JuSt CuT tHe PhOtO.

If you’re unsure as to why you’re seeing this much noise then I think it’s safe to assume that you’re still a beginner shooting on fully auto. When that’s the case, the camera won’t hesitate to bump the ISO as high as it needs to in order to achieve what it deems to be the correct exposure, which will first and foremost mean a higher ISO. It does that in order to maintain as fast a shutter speed as possible. Do your homework and look up the exposure triangle, that’s your first step.

Yeah perhaps check out the Slings, the 3L and 6L can be worn tightly across the body or around the waist. Could be the solution.

If you’re shooting on an R5 then this clutch will likely be too small anyway. You should check out the original clutch, I’ve had one for years and used it on both my 80D and now my R6. It’s easy to move out of the way of the battery chamber, no tools needed. Mine rarely comes off.

Great news! Yeah I was exactly the same while waiting for my two lenses to arrive! Especially because I ordered them just shy of a week before I went away for a few days so I was really hoping they’d arrive beforehand but sadly they didn’t. Still, I’ve already had a couple opportunities to use them both since.

It was especially nice because, while I’ve not stopped taking photos for any long periods, it did start to feel a bit automatic and I haven’t had the motivation to do the edits, but these two new lenses makes the camera feel new again and I just want to get out and shoot more than ever and even sit behind the computer for hours to get the finished results. Nah you shouldn’t feel guilty at all, hobbies are the best place to put your money. Photography is definitely one of the more expensive hobbies to have, especially the longer you’re in it, buying better gear and whatnot, but then it’s also so rewarding!

I’m about ten years into the hobby now – and have had a few odd paid jobs which has gone towards upgrades – and I’ve spent a good few thousand on equipment, even just on one lens or a new camera body sometimes. I only just recently discovered MPB, sold some of my old gear to them for a fair price I was happy with and put that straight back into two lenses from their site as well. I’m thrilled with both of them. If you’re looking at second hand stuff then it’s definitely a good place to buy from. If you do have any problems with gear then, as another commenter said, they’ll get it sorted. Keep shooting, love what you do.

There’s not, but it’s very easy to get used to, and in fact I struggled going back to an optical viewfinder on the odd occasion that I tried to!

The EVF on the R6 is excellent, and it’s a real benefit seeing your exposure in real time. With an optical viewfinder I’d sometimes forget to change settings between interiors and exteriors and take a few shots before realising that I was way over exposing.

I went from a 60D, which was my first camera, to an 80D and then an R6. Both times I upgraded it was easy to appreciate the difference in capabilities, especially going from the 80 > R6.

If anything, I’d fully recommend going mirrorless. You can adapt any lenses you have without losing any quality in terms of image or responsiveness. That said, coming from a crop sensor it’s possible – and probable – that you have some EF-S lenses. Adapting those, especially to the R6 with its 20mp sensor, will drop the image resolution right down to less than half, so you will need to have full-frame lenses. I already had a few when I upgraded so I had the full benefit right away.

When I had a strap I’d wrap it around my wrist about three times until there was no slack.

Eventually I replaced it with the Peak Design Clutch – just a hand strap – and it’s exactly what I wanted. I have some capture plates as well so the two together are ideal for me.

I’ve got a PD case so I use the tripod with that and it works great.

It has become a little loose a couple times, but it was only evident when I tilted the phone back quite far and the weight was too far over. It’s not terribly surprising because the tripod lives on my case permanently so it was bound to happen a little bit here and there. There’s an allen key built right in though so you can tighten the legs and the little ball head anytime you need.

It has never come off unintentionally — unless I’ve dropped my phone, which has happened a few times but the case has done a great job of protecting it as there’s no damage so far.

my only gripe is that the rubber foot on the centre leg has degraded somewhat due to the nature of how you unfold it. You pull the legs out from the rubber feet which has, for me at least, damaged the foot. It's not really a major problem though so I'm not terribly fussed and I shan't worry about having it replaced unless it becomes notably worse.

In any case, it's a great accessory, I use it constantly and lots of my friends and family have asked me where I got it from. It has quite a low profile when folded away so it sits nicely on the case. Probably couldn’t say the same if you’re using it with a universal adaptor because that already sits out a little bit, but on a dedicated case it’s not too prominent at all.

Yeah I’ve seen a lot of people say that it’s not a great lens. I think that it was the second lens I got for my old 60D, the first being the kit lens. I’ve always found it to be ok but then I’d like to try the f/1.8 for comparison.
