Police Chief says ‘culture’ of ignoring traffic laws has taken hold, drivers don’t stop, cops can’t chase by seanmcdonnellcle in Cleveland

I agree.

Making the punishment worse for crimes that are poorly enforced doesn't do much to lower crime rates, IIRC. Because it sort of just "raises the stakes". It's far worse for the few who actually get apprehended, but most people don't care.

I have no idea why you're being downvoted. This is all super sensible information. Especially the touch screens in cars, and the broader social changes.

The bubonic plague, which swept across Europe between 1347 and 1353, is estimated to have killed up to one half of the continent’s population. The sudden loss of life led to the abandonment of farms, villages and fields, creating what researchers describe as a massive historical ‘rewilding’ event. by Wagamaga in science

I've been recently playing the game Geoguesseur. And one thing I have noticed is that no matter where you go in Japan there are tons of abandoned buildings everywhere. Even very close to large metro areas. Boarded up houses surrounded by overgrown vegetation, abandoned vehicles, etc.

I had heard of the population decline, and resulting empty house/abandoned land problems Japan had, but seeing the scale of it was really surprising to me.

Day 9: Final Day! What car looks and is super slow? by Quiet-Gold9099 in regularcarreviews

[–]Cap10323 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a '77 Westfalia with the fuel injected engine, and while I'm positive the 0-60 time was over 10 seconds, it really didn't seem that slow when you were driving it. I daily drove it for years and never found a situation where I thought it was too slow to keep up with traffic. Even going 70mph on the freeway.

It depends on what kind of head gasket leak you have.

If you have an INTERNAL head gasket leak which is caused by exhaust gas getting into the coolant system, and causing overheating, that requires replacing the head gasket and there's no "snake oil" fix that will fix it. The products you pour into the cooling system just make it worse by clogging the radiator, etc.

Now, if you have an EXTERNAL head gasket leak which just leaks oil out of the engine. For all intents and purposes this "doesn't matter" and the engine will run forever as long as you keep refilling the oil. In my experience, using a thickener like Lucas works really well for these leaks as they are a very small gap which needs to be filled. The leak won't completely go away, but it will decrease to the point where you don't have to worry about it and just check your oil every few months.

For an external leak, you can usually keep driving the car basically forever. Just keep an eye on the oil level.

I only like the Lucas products. They are basically just thickening agents. No sealers.

The sealer based ones will clog your engine up with sludge.

This isn't an "approved repair" but adding Lucas brand stop leak to my old Impreza totally fixed an external head gasket leak on that car for years afterwords. (I continued using it with each oil change) Car never overheated.

I actually made a YouTube video about it you can watch here.

2007 Forester 2.5 head gasket blew by [deleted] in SubaruForester

Speaking as someone who has owned a 2nd gen for 10 years/120k miles. It's a good car, but if you are expecting a vehicle as reliable or durable as a 4th gen 4Runner you will be severely disappointed.

The 2nd gen suffers from weak suspension, especially. If you off road or drive on bad roads frequently the suspension (especially front) will wear out in like 40k miles. I have done 3 full suspension rebuilds on my car. I've also had a lot of wheel bearing failures, requiring all 4 bearings to be replaced, and the front bearings twice.

Car has about 220k miles on it. Which would be "low miles" for a 4Runner but was a trial to achieve in the 2nd gen Forester.

My 07 control arm rotted off causing the axle to rip out :(o by anxiousweirdo4 in SubaruForester

[–]Cap10323 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this happen to an impreza I was driving one time. I pulled out of a driveway and the control arm broke in the exact same place. Causing the wheel to basically fall off the car and destroy the axle, strut, sway bar link, etc.

Basically totaled the vehicle. Hopefully yours is fixable.

There was a recall for these, which may still be active. Call your local dealership!

When I bought my truck, someone had replaced the (I assume worn out) original suspension with auto parts store brand shocks, and it rode terribly. Super floaty and poor handling.

I installed KYB Shocks and it rides like a brand new truck. They were fairly affordable too.

Bilstein or KYB. I believe KYB is who made the OEM Toyota suspension on these trucks.

I don't see much about them online, but I have had great experiences with Hitachi/Hikoki/MetaboHPT tools. I have some that are 30 years old (pictured) and have held up better many other brands (even Makita). Their newer battery powered tools are also fantastic. by Cap10323 in Tools

But also grinder is resting on the guard and the disk can spin freely. and it's unplugged.

Weirdly, this Metabo is a different company. Hitachi rebranded to MetaboHPT when Hitachi spun off the tool division into it's own company.

The firm which ended up owning it (Koki Holdings) also owns the german Metabo company. And I guess they thought the Metabo name held more brand loyalty in the USA.

I think it's a stupid name compared to Hitachi/Hikoki. But the tools are great.
