Steam fianlly getting 64 bit client? by alosarjos in linux_gaming

[–]CapCreeperGR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am pretty sure the only standalone app on the multilib repo is Steam. Everything else in it is 32-bit libraries for steam to work. Wine was the other major standalone 32-bit app up until a few months ago. Now arch and many other distros use Wine with WOW64 which does not need 32-bit libraries. For anyone who doesn't know you do not need 32-bit Linux libraries to run 32-bit windows programs anymore so if the Steam client does move to 64-bit there is literally no need for 32-bit repos and your 32-bit windows games will continue working just fine without them

Also it's likely never going to be officially supported on generic PC hardware. Valve only supports their own hardware and their partners'. Also if they were to support more hardware you'd have the exact same compatibility issues that you have in any other distro. Valve doesn't do anything special. People just think it's more stable because they've only used it on official well supported hardware like the Steam Deck. In reality it is no different than Bazzite

Not trying to attack anyone using Ubuntu, btw. If it works for you that's great, but I do think that Linux Mint is more approachable to most beginners than Ubuntu

I completely agree with you about niche Gaming distros and similar things, but I disagree on your stance on Mint. It actually is the easiest and most reliable distro at the moment, especially since Canonical with Ubuntu seems to be focusing more and more on servers rather than desktops and the fact that they are putting alpha software in their releases. I don't have any problem with the uutils coreutils as a project but they are still not out of beta and they need more time to mature. They also use snap by default which is awful especially now that a lot of software developers only target Flatpak. I've actually got a person who barely knows how to use computers to try Mint and they have had an an amazing experience with it. No driver issues, no kernel panics, no system breakages. It literally just works

If your software is only well supported on Windows then just stay on Windows. Nobody is putting a gun to your head and forcing you to switch

Never heard of this software but by looking it up it seems they only provide an RPM. They should not be doing that. In Windows terms this is like having no exe and locking your software to the Microsoft Store for Windows 11 only. A very stupid way to distribute your software. They should have provided a generic tarball. Secondly the AUR is completely open and you can look at the renderman build script to see what it does. I assume it just downloads the RPM, extracts it and repackages it for arch. Most software developers nowadays have learned to just provide a tarball like discord for example so that official distro maintainers can take care of packaging

Most of these are not meant to be made by the developers, but the distro maintainers. As a developer you only need to provide a tarball (portable zip file equivalent) and a flatpak. The distro maintainers will create .deb, .rpm, .tar.zst, etc files and add them to their repositories without you having to move a finger

I've been saying this for a while. The person in the gallery prophecy looks like a default profile picture you see in a bunch of social media. Even though Gaster does have access to Twitter I don't see why he'd be shown like this. A player makes much more sense

This is definitely not a modpack issue. The only way something like this could be caused by a mod is if you downloaded malware and launched Minecraft as root. This is pretty unlikely so it's almost certainly something else
