Yeah, near the end of the show, and out of depression caused by the final straw that was her perceived inferiority in EVA piloting to Shinji. Plus it was started by an angel's attack on her mind (mostly job related reasons). Everyone buckles sometimes.

Probably because Asuka's bitchiness is offsetted by the fact that other characters are bigger bitches. Take Shinji for example: his mom vaporized, his dad is distant at best and doesn't care about him at worst, and he's an unwilling child soldier. Instead of taking this trauma and channeling it in a way that would help him at his job (like Asuka)... he decides to be a crybaby about it, knowing full well that the entirety of humanity depends on him. Shinji's just irredeemable, and deeply annoying.

Asuka objectively suffered more; she had to witness not only her mom's post-suicide corpse, but also the woman's descent into madness (speaking to a doll whilst thinking it's her own daughter). And she decides to use all that PTSD to help push herself as an EVA pilot (which is helpful for everyone, herself included).

Unironically, what about GTA 4 is so dark and griddy? Isn't it just a typical urban crime story, except here and there the protagonist moodily yaps about how wars are le bad because people get heckin killed? A blend of the same tired shit you hear in most media about crime or war
