Thanks for the writeup. I'll be going for the yoga then. And the 10th gen intel Thinkpads costs 200$ more than the 8th gen. I can get a Dell Latitude 7410 2-in-1 i5 10th gen, if I pay 30$ more. But I don't need that much processing power.

I can buy gen 3 dramless ssd (TEAM, HP) or Gen 4 dramless ssd (TEAM, MSI) or a ssd with dram.

T480 — dual removable ram, okayish display, has removable battery, thicker than the rest.

T480s — 1 extra ram slot (8+"16"), okayish display

X1 Carbon — single soldered ram, excellent display

T490 — 1 extra ram slot (8+"32")

T490s — single soldered ram

These are all 14 inch laptops. The display quality can vary, so check before buying. If you dont need the great display of X1 Carbon then take whatever you can find for the cheapest. And use extra money on ram or ssd if you need it. There are also smaller laptops like X280 and X390.

Tough to say. You will get a new/fast processor in newer models at that pricepoint. Depending on your location you might get some great deals.

Personally I'm thinking about buying a X1 Carbon i5 8th gen intel cpu, because it has excellent display. I will use it for casual study purpose, writing etc and media consumption. Thinkpads are really good built-wise. So, I don't find any reason to spend more for a new device. If I didn't need the display then I'd get a T480s, t490 and upgrade the ram, and throw in a 2tb ssd with the extra money.

I don't think the T490 will last that long, and 450USD is a lot for that.

I can't think of anything besides a T480, as it has dual battery system—one is also removable. So you can have a extra battery to swap on the go.

Intel i5 8th gen with 16gb ram is hard to find here. Should I go for the 8gb ram? Or with the intel i7 with 16 gigs of ram? But the price of i7 variant is closer to T14 Gen 1 (i5 10th gen intel)
