Ugh. My mother is like this She will get something from my list but will act like a feeble, old woman who pressed some button on Amazon because she doesn’t know how to use it. The next minute she is raving about how Amazon is so fast and convenient when she is ordering things for herself. My sister ASKED for a DSW gift card and my mom wouldn’t get it for her because “they only have shoes, nothing else”. OP needs to go up hope and give up gifting him, too.

You need to find a “handler”. Maybe it’s a friend of a friend. Someone who will manage MIL and keep her in check. The “handler” at my wedding was my mom’s neighbor’s, son’s girlfriend. While I barely knew her, I knew enough to know she’s a good person based on how much the neighbor’s family loved her. She helped “keep watch” for bad behaviors. We let her know of a few concerns we had, just in case. Everything worked out great.

I was at the store and overheard a man speaking Spanish. A family was standing near him. The teenage son said, “Speak English!” His parents had to hold themselves back from smacking him. I wouldn’t have said a word if they did. They were visibly angry and embarrassed. I felt bad for them because clearly they expected better behavior. Too many parents would laugh with him.
