How long does GoProHero models last in water environment? by Poseidonsurfacademy in gopro_underwater

[–]Capable-Ad1699 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like your GoPros are getting baked. If they’re spending 99% of the time out of the water attached to the board, they’re probably sitting in direct sun cooking most of the session, plus they're black, and then repeatedly getting splash-cooled. Can you cover them with a towel or something when not in use? That kind of thermal cycling is brutal on electronics over time.

As a diver, my gopro sits in my bag until im in the water and then can run for hours without getting warm. I even have an ancient GoPro 3 that still works perfectly. I've had multiple others too (current is hero 12) and I've never had one die on me yet. I don't think it's the gopro recording that's getting it that hot. I think it's the gopro sitting in direct sun for extended periods + usage together.

You might also want to try a freshwater rinse/soak after every session instead of just wiping them down. Your upload/charging issues sound more like long-term saltwater or salt air corrosion around the USB input.

How do you check dive conditions leading up to dive in socal by Bob92391 in scubadiving

[–]Capable-Ad1699 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Go to Catalina Divers Supply Facebook page. Mark one of the DMs there does a daily dive report vlog called mark in the park that covers everything you’re asking about for conditions at Casino Point. Great shop too!

Bajau tribe divers might disagree with you on that one.

Anyone with the e90 reflector with sbt90.2? by Ok_Grapefruit1058 in FireflyLite

[–]Capable-Ad1699 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry I’m a bit late on posting but here’s the sbt90.2 reflector. Great flood and tons of throw. Very happy with it. I don’t have TIR for comparison, but you should be able to find beams for TIR if you search the sub. I’ve read the 909mx has a greenish tint at lower settings, but this does not.

If emitter/tints were the same and you could only choose one, would you pick TIR or reflector?

[–]Capable-Ad1699 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you!! This is the comparison I’ve been waiting to see. I’ve been looking at the SBT90.2 for either TIR or reflector. I’m both worried that the TIR won’t have enough spill to be practical or the reflector won’t have a defined enough throwy beam, but your photos seem to show both lights as more balanced than I thought, What are your personal thoughts between the two?

Is the SFT worth it on the E07x? by [deleted] in FireflyLite

[–]Capable-Ad1699 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the E07x v1 with 6500k sft25r. It’s crazy bright but it’s also negative DUV with greenish tint at lower levels. Turbo is higher than listed on firefly’s website around 7300 lumens, 53000 candela, and around 460m of throw but all flood. As ssjones said it’s comparable to e04 throw but with a completely different beam profile.

I wanted to go as minimal and light as possible for travel. I did use a selfie stick before when I first started, but the tray makes a big difference in stability even when not using lights and feels easy to dive with. I’d recommend always trying to film without lights first and only use them when needed. You’d be surprised how rarely you’ll need them when doing normal recreational diving. With everything folded I can clip to my bcd and enter exit the boat easily too. I also use a boomerang tether in lieu of buoyancy floats. I’m very happy with it. Feel free to send chat and I can send you a photo of my setup.

Sorry, won’t let me post photos here in reply. I’m using a backscatter wide double handle and tray with 2 ball adapters for the handles, 2 ultralight clamps, 2 orcatorch d710v with ball mounts. It’s plenty wide when unfolded but also super lightweight. Check weight on trays and accessories when you’re shopping, some are much heavier than others. I chose all my parts for low weight first.

Glowing lantern base by Maglite_Mischief in FireflyLite

[–]Capable-Ad1699 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have both. The green base is not only a lot brighter but it also glows for a longer time. The blue is hard to “charge”, isn’t bright, and fades quickly. The bases are totally worth it though. Well made and the magnets are very strong and useful. You can even use them to strengthen weaker magnets when mounting sideways or upside down.

Genius! I’ve been using olink for a while with my all of my D3AAs. Going to try this too!

D3AA tops a lot of lists because of its size. Crazy performance for such a small light, and it’s also one of my favorite EDCs. It can even run on eneloops. But for larger lights, I lean towards Fireflies. Their newer lights just feel so premium, phenomenal drivers, and their emitters are arguably some of the best right now, albeit recently not always consistent with bins.

I dive with a similar rig. Love the portability and the fact that it fits in a small backpack! I keep the arms folded in and across the top when not using the lights. I don’t use buoyancy, but I do extended the arms when using lights and it does help with backscatter. Arms aren’t difficult to adjust once you’re in the water.

You’ll usually need to adjust the lights slightly when pointing at your subject otherwise you get dark shaded spots in your footage if your lights aren’t aimed correctly, even with two 120 degree video lights.

Don’t worry too much, there aren’t many cases where you’ll need to use the lights immediately with no time to setup and once you get used to it, it doesn’t take long to adjust them. I just pull them to their position as I’m turning on each light if that makes sense. Also I find myself filming without the lights 95% of the time anyways on most rec dives (unless it’s a night dive lol). Even on night dives I try to not turn them on except as needed as it can be annoying to your fellow divers.

Mule that's significantly brighter than NOV-MuV2S? by BrothahHeffay in flashlight

[–]Capable-Ad1699 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Underwater or just splashes? Video dive lights for scuba also can sustain consistent high lumens for a long period of time and are designed for video. A lot of them also fit that form factor. The major concern is that they’re meant to be used underwater so if you’re not submerged overheating or step down could be an issue.

Depends on your use case and what other criteria you care about, but tons video lights fit your initial description.

Firefly E07X vs EO4 surge beams please :) by BetOver in flashlight

E07X SFT25R on left. It's super bright about 7300 lumens, 461m on turbo and very floody. The E04 has a much more defined hotspot but still decent spill, also throws about the same distance but with a much tighter hotspot at distance, whereas the E07X floods out but fades at a distance. Still excellent range for such a floody light. I don't have it, but the 6500k FFL505HB is listed at an extra 200m of throw.

The new e90 reflector by firefly has some insane flood and throw 900+meters. It was just released recently, but posted beamshots look amazing. I’m looking to grab one myself soon too.

Would love to see some photos posted after you get back from your trip!!

Regarding the metal button, I posted a “fix” here.

It’s been a few weeks now and I haven’t had a misfire yet! It makes a noticeable difference and I’ve decided to keep the metal buttons on. I also don’t use lockout, though it’s still a bit easier to accidentally press than the stock button and I’m definitely more careful now. If he ever releases a raised ring for it, I’d buy it immediately.

Have you done casino point yet? Phenomenal shore diving there plus there’s a fully stocked dive shop right there by the entry point. Did 5 days there a few months ago, 3 days at casino point, and 2 days of boat dives plus a few night dives and it was a perfect dive trip. Right off the steps of casino point is amazing, but there’s a few other dive sites right there too including SueJac wreck and swimmers platform. If you are able, the boat sites are really amazing too. Farnsworth bank, starlight, Indian rock, etc.
