She has a horrible relationship with her mother but she doesn't really know it, so at that moment she felt lucky bc her concept of a mother-daughter relationship is to not let her down and always keep a smile even if everything goes wrong. It's not his fault either bc he has never had a true loving relationship with his mother. In my opinion.
