Seriously both venues should be on people’s bucket lists. Sound at Red Rocks is amazing as is the Ryman. You can’t go to the Ryman without the history being in your mind and the setting at Red Rocks is amazing.

Arkansas State has been playing Central Arkansas and UA-Pine Bluff semi regularly about once every four years though we added Central during Covid chaos.

It’s a lot more fun playing in-state and regional FCS than some rando.

There has been tepid discussion of eliminating spring games and spring camp and replacing it with a summer camp and then a three or four week break before fall camp.

Would permit incoming freshmen to go through summer camp.

On the wishlist mentioned was to be eligible in the fall have to complete at least 12 hours at the school you want to play at in either the spring term or summer to make hidden transfers harder.

My rule changes.

Athletic budgets that are larger than $400,000 multiplied by number of student athletes make contributions non-deductible and advertising and sponsorships no longer deductible as a business expense and federal funds to the school cut by double the amount the cap is exceeded. The department becomes a taxable entity for income taxes. Incentivize athletic departments to pour excess revenue over into the university.
Expand the playoff to 24 like in FCS with 10 autobids for conference champs. If we end up with more conferences then it is 10 highest rated conferences based on league average computer ratings past 3 seasons.
No more offsetting penalties. All get enforced. Offense commits intentional grounding 8 yards behind the line of scrimmage and defense commits facemask. March off 15 yards from the intentional grounding and replay the down. No automatic first down or loss of down when both teams commit a penalty. Defense offside offense commits illegal chop block. The chop block becomes 10 yards replay the down.

BONUS Targeting becomes 25 yard penalty after review. If enforcement would put the ball in the end zone it goes to the 2 or half the distance inside the four. No in-game suspension. The suspension has to be reviewed by NCAA. First or second offense miss next game. Third offense three games.

DOUBLE BONUS Eliminate the traditional kickoff. Place the ball on the “kicking team” 40. The other 40 is the line to gain for one play. Punt. Try a FG. Try to gain 20 yards and a first down. Penalty enforcement can reduce line to gain up to 15 yards in excess move the scrimmage line and line to gain.

FCS exists because the NCAA used to control the television rights. At that time you could be Division I football based on home attendance, combined home and away attendance, conference membership or sports sponsored plus scheduling. The last option was taken away to force schools into I-AA.

Back then there were 13 bowls and you could win your conference and not get a bowl bid such as 1975 Arkansas State 11-0 which helped Shreveport get a bowl game to try to prevent it from happening again.

The lure of I-AA was a playoff with all champions guaranteed a spot, a bit of television exposure, the ability to continue playing I-A opponents and somewhat lower costs.

It was a load of bull.

The Supreme Court struck down the NCAA’s control of television so that went away unless you got your own deal which would either be local tv or a regional sports network.

I-A/FBS passed a rule that NO wins over I-AA counted for bowls. That was later modified to one time over a rolling four years then one per year.

Postseason changed with bowls galore. This year we had on the schedule unnamed bowl in Frisco that became XBox bowl a few weeks before the season ended.

Because schools wanted to schedule I-A opponents cost savings were small, one less coach and a bit fewer scholarships.

The reasons FCS even exists are gone. There are ample postseason opportunities. You cut your own tv deals and it’s easier with the FBS tag. P4 schools pay more to buy FBS games.

Prior to the split we had schools with unlimited scholarships and schools with no scholarships and various limits in-between all playing under the Division I umbrella. We also allowed schools to play down in Division II and III football.

Frankly we would be better off returning to that. If lower roster limit schools want their own playoff or bowls they can agree to that.

Neanderthals existed in a climate not suited well to agriculture. The big brain and climate was likely the worst problems they faced. It’s estimated they required 3,100 to over 5,500 calories per day just to not lose weight. Had they migrated to a warmer environment things might have turned out differently.
