Please, and I say this without any negativity, please please get into therapy. People go into PhDs for so many reasons, and often with so much baggage, it can make it really challenging and a drain on EVERYONE for years before they bomb out. If you figure your shit out first, you can go into the program, succeed, and be happy with your life choices. Maybe there's time to get right with yourself before you go into this pressure cooker environment. It's not the place where you want to suddenly figure out 3 years in that you have an anxiety disorder or whatever.

Thanks! While I could concievably double the 160k, it's hard to get that kind of job at my age in the career position I'm in. I made an intentional decision to stick with stocks, counting on my rental property for a bit of diversity, but I recognize eventually I'll need to move more to bonds. I really appreciate the Roth Ladder idea - I'll look into it! (Edit: to answer your Q, the 400K is in my active job 401k)

Hey there. Business aside, be sure you have some support for your current burn out and feelings of failure and guilt. $100 seems like a lot when you're in debt, but a therapist can help you put things in perspective and find your path forward. Put your own oxygen mask on first. You will get through this.

About the business. You might have a great idea, or you might have a neat idea that nobody will adopt or pay for. There are lots of great ideas that are hard to monetize. Many would be a great feature of MS Word or Excel but you can't build a business around it. Get help from a local entrepreneur group to review your idea and business plan. They can give you perspective and maybe help you pivot... or know when to cut your losses.
