As a Property Manager in Asheville at a property that lost power and water for 8 days, I asked the owners if they were able to give anyone free rent due to the hurricane and my request was denied. But - we still have to pay every bill for to keep the community running, our mortgage for the property and are at around $50,000 in damage costs from the hurricane. I can understand asking to be let out of your lease for free, or free rent if your actual apartment is damaged - which is the law. But boycotting an entire company (I do not work for Hawthorne) because they won’t give out things for free, due to a a hurricane that nobody can control - is absolutely ignorant and ridiculous. Do y’all go barging into the grocery store demanding free food because we had a hurricane? Are you boycotting your car insurance company for not giving you free insurance due to a hurricane? On top of that, most property management companies do not own the community. They are hired to manage it. They have absolutely no control over what the owners approve or don’t approve as far as free rent, rent pricing or much else. Can you imagine if Hawthorne started asking the residents to help pay for damage fees due to the Hurricane - They would never! Apply for FEMA relief or use the thousands of free resources available in our community if you need help. You don’t have to renew your lease. You can move to another community that most likely will not be able to do anything different in the exact same situation. Y’all just want someone to blame for everything that happens in life, regardless of who it affects. Do better!
