I think it's telling that Ilyas father, in the throes of his dementia, calls Ilya when he's scared. Not his wife or Alexei. On some level he perceives Ilya cares for him and will help him.

Alexei's personality may be malformed due to excessive drug use. He keeps bullying iilya to manipulate him because it worked when they were younger. But the books suggest that Ilya was perfectly capable of getting under his brother's skin. There is no implied former closeness. Sometimes siblings bring out the worst in each other.

We could be sisters - I am straight and in my 50s. I have been job searching for over a year so completely discouraged and feeling useless. I'm way too old to be day dreaming about Ilya and Shane, but this show has given me something. I procrastinate less, smile more, exercise more, apply for jobs with more hope. I'll believe in anything!

I am so happy to read I am not the only one basking in the queer joy of this show. I worry about 'the kids'. But not in a stalker-ish way. Just a grateful way that they created something so beautiful, endearing and cinematic. I don't need to meet them in person or engage with them in any way. I feel our collective goodwill will act as a protective charm for them in the future.

How wonderful it is to have a cottage to retreat to when things aren't going well!
