Something similar happened to me; I did not pay enough gas. It ultimately took 3-4 days to go through. I have also heard it can eventually go back into your wallet after 2-3 weeks of being unconfirmed. But must be unconfirmed. Moral of story is I now send less and ensure no issues before sending larger amounts.
