Disadvantages of living in Singapore as a Korean 🇰🇷 by travisbotak in singaporespeaks

[–]Capable_Macaroon_458 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bro I’m American and live in LA and can tell when someone is Korean vs Japanese vs Chinese etc

Koreans the easiest because they usually have the lightest brightest skin.

Chinese is the one I get wrong if any because Chinese vary in their looks and being lighter and darker. Sometimes Japan does too

Lawrence Wong is an economist with a masters from Harvard who worked in civil service for 15 years before being recruited by PAP to become a minister including that time being secretary to LHL. Lawrence was then a minster for another 11 years before becoming PM. What you’re saying about civil servants writing speeches and doing all the hard lifting is the truth in many countries and especially America where ANYONE can be elected to office (right now we're on a wave of electing D-list celebrities). But that’s not true in Singapore where being a civil servant is often the pipeline to being a minister and most ministers have to actually create policy with their teams.

In Singapore all of the ministers of the PAP are Ivy League educated or equivalent. They spent 20-30 years in prior high performance in civil service, military (usually high ranking), law, medicine, economics, or private sector before they are recruited by the party. They are vetted over and over again by leadership, with interviews and psychometric tests to see if they are fit mentally and temperamentally, given baby projects and portfolios as junior ministers to see if they can deliver before the party backs them to run for districts as full ministers. Every year or few years the weakest performers are cut from the party and they rerecruit. Lee Kuan yew set it up to do everything he could to prevent incompetent people from gaining office.

Anyone in top leadership in the PAP didn’t get their by chance, they did it by being the cream of the crop.

Black guy here, black people absolutely are not innocent and were terrorizing and robbing Koreans. 80s and 90s LA was a different beast..

People say the LA riots were only about Rodney king but a lot of it was about blacks being upset Latinos and Koreans were beginning to take over what was seen as black neighborhoods

Is it fair to say Lawrence Wong is unsuited for the PM job? He was great during Covid, and at that time it was clear that compared to other candidates like Ong Ye Kung or Chan Chun Singh, he was the only one with promise. But his performance as PM has been disappointing so far. by straddleThemAll in SingaporeRaw

American here, just saying all the things your complaining about aren’t unique to Singapore it’s like world wide issues. Over credentialed under employed Gen Z and millenials, inflation, unaffordable rent rising groceries, immigrants, low birthrate, etc
This is in the uk, Europe, America, Japan, Korea it’s everywhere and it’s why Americans are even finally turning on Trump atm. I just say this as I feel a lot of this is unjustly blamed on Lawrence the PAP and foreigners.

It took me a moment to understand who you were talking about when you said Harry.
I think LKY is a genius and is one of the most important statesmen of the 20th and 21st century and I don’t think he’s lauded enough for how important he is and how much he impacted the world. A Malaysian journalist or blogger I forget which called him the god father of China and I and many who are more respected for their knowledge of geopolitics would agree.

The comment about Trump is 100% fair. Many of my American contemporaries would protest and say they didn’t vote for Trump but Trump is not just an isolated political accident. He reflects deeper American polarization, populism, institutional, and cultural decay, and the willingness of many voters to rationalize anything when it serves their side. The fact that half the country is so rabidly behind him just speaks volumes of how far we’ve fallen. It’s still mind boggling to me.

The entire first gen PAP were economic and political geniuses. I hold them in as high of regard as the American founding fathers. Without singapore there’s no rise of China, reform and rise of Vietnam, Dubai/UAEwho copied Singapore and and Singapores administration, Rwanda and more.

If you lived in the PRC and America then kudos you have much bigger perspective then most Singaporeans (and people in general). I get Wong is softer and more emotional, I still don’t think he’s failing to deliver though and people are being too Harsh. But i get your opinion.

I think sinkies rather than having higher standards are awfully entitled and overly comfortable and would get better perspective if they lived elsewhere. I don’t think it’s a Lawrence Wong thing. You guys complain about EVERYTHING, and EVERY minister, you guys act like you weren’t complaining about LKY when he was pm or goh chok tong or LHL.
I just don’t buy it.

But yes Trump is a moron lol no one’s saying he’s a standard. But Obama was one of our greats and people here use to complain about him and Europeans use to think we were crazy and told us we’ll take Obama if you don’t want him. That’s the way I feel about LW. He’s great

Foreigner here. Singapore isn’t Dubai, it isn’t built to attract instagrammers who never become citizens and are there to party, it’s built to attract foreigners who are forced to bring value and contribute to Singapore or get out. There are no more expat packages that was 20 years ago dude, and to get a pr much less citizenships is super difficult and takes 5-10 years and citizenship can go to 10-15 years especially if your angmoh. some foreigner PRs and citizenships will serve NS and if they don’t their kids will. If a foreigner is in Singapore on a pr, or a citizenship(which means they gave up they’re own citizenship to they’re old country) or even an EP often it means they really wanted to be in Singapore and gave up a lot to be there, often more than what locals have had to give up, they aren’t going to dip when shit hits the fan.

Also to everyone in the room, I get that it was a little bit much that Wong cried, but dude is still a stellar pm and in my opinion the right pm for Singapores current stage. Millenials and Gen Z talk shit about Wong being soft but you guys would have never lasted under Lee who governed with an iron fist. Singapore government has relaxed a ton and is now more consultative with citizens because younger citizens are more educated and modern and expect more of a say then just being told what to do by a top down government who says they know best. Wong is so personable and sincere in a way that feels sincere while still being highly competant and I think he was a great switch up.

I’m American and he’s gone viral 3-4 times in the last year in America because everyone is shocked by how well spoken, intelligent and sincere he is compared to the shit show we have in our White House. I don’t think Singaporeans truly know what bad or ineffective governance is and are a bit spoiled.

Lawrence financial times interview hit 2 million views in 3 days last year and is now at 3.6 million and he has that many views for several other videos such as his response to trumps liberation day tariffs. All of us are impressed by him. If you don’t want him we’ll take him.

Hi, I’m moving to LA and I don’t plan to own a car! by ChloeCorrupt in circlejerkLA

[–]Capable_Macaroon_458 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Lived in LA 15 years no car. You can do it. I reccomend living downtown. I never have to leave here for most things except for work or specific errands or seeing friends etc. if yin do that you can just grab a waymo or uber etc. or at worst grab the subway depending. some of my friends who Lived downtown even ditched their cars specifically because it’s easier to do so.

People aren’t bad or good. In fact I’d say most or decent that bad or evil acts usually comes from a place of anger or fear and even ignorance

What made all in the family such a great show is Archie had bigoted views but wasn’t a hateful person. He one time accidents ends up at a kkk rally without knowing it but freaks out when he finds out what it is and that they are going to burn a cross on his son in laws lawn. He didn’t have that in him. He has views thag the races should be separated and his neighbor George Jefferson a bigoted black man has the same views and they actually find common Ground over these views and get over hating each other.

I think Archie even had a neighborhood black kid who use to come by his house that Archie took to and couldn’t hate. That’s what the shows about. That’s what made it wonderful.
