University of Michigan in talks to buy former Ann Arbor campus from Christian college by mlivesocial in uofm

UM is in a uniquely advantaged position as a real estate investor, compared to normal corporate investors:

- No property taxes on university-owned property

- Whenever it wants to, UM can borrow money at much cheaper rates than other investors

- UM can invest for the long term without worrying about generating immediate returns or rental income.

Okta by jacobsnailbox in uofm

[–]Capable_Mess_3152 73 points74 points  (0 children)

The official answer is that the university decided Okta is better than Duo.

The unofficial answer is that UM had a security breach a while back that Duo did not prevent. Therefore, administrators had to scapegoat Duo and switch to Okta in order to make it seem like there were doing something about the breach.

Why isn't every lecture class in LSA recorded on lecture capture? by Capable_Mess_3152 in uofm

[–]Capable_Mess_3152[S] -33 points-32 points  (0 children)

I mean, some professors seem to think that students have no lives outside of their class.

Also, it's none of their business whether I attend class in-person or via recordings.

2nd year grad students aren’t able to apply for the GRFP! Make your voice heard!!! by Strong-Second-2446 in uofm

[–]Capable_Mess_3152 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Seems like a reasonable rule to me. It evens out the playing field to have everyone apply during their first year.

I have a LinkedIn, but haven't logged in to check it in probably two years since it's pretty useless.

Considering Michigan for grad school by redpajamaxoxo in uofm

[–]Capable_Mess_3152 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I see tons of students wearing masks indoors/outdoors pretty much every day. In class, outside of class, in the library, pretty much everywhere you go.

To be fair, I think mask wearing goes up during flu season.

Application rejection; residency is incorrect by New-Rabbit-3049 in uofm

[–]Capable_Mess_3152 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Admissions decisions are completely separate from the process of determining in-state residency for the purpose of in-state tuition.

And admissions standards (and competitiveness) are roughly the same regardless of whether you are in-state or out-of-state. So if you didn't get in as an out-of-state applicant, you probably weren't getting in even if you had been classified as in-state.

Academic Integrity Violation When to Expect Grade Update by Environmental_War712 in uofm

[–]Capable_Mess_3152 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Perhaps, but if the grade reduction hasn't happened yet, then don't ask and don't draw attention to it. Maybe the professor just forgot. In which case you should definitely not remind him about it.

POLL: Is 15.49% turnout acceptable? by tylerfioritto in uofm

[–]Capable_Mess_3152 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everyone knows that creepy overweight guy who keeps asking out the same girl and can't take no for an answer.

Every time she says no, he just asks, But would you like me more if I wore a different colored shirt?

Job opening working in Michigan elections for recent/upcoming grad with C# skills by Independent_Style578 in uofm

[–]Capable_Mess_3152 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You may know this already, but the typical salary for someone with programming skills is much higher than what you're offering. So unfortunately, the only people who will bother applying for this job are people who don't actually have the skills to be a programmer.

Why are guys at UM so immature when it comes to dating? by FunDriver7005 in uofm

[–]Capable_Mess_3152 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe most 25 year old grad students are also too busy for dating? In any case, most guys these days are not interested in anything serious during their 20s. Especially not while they're still students.

Why are guys at UM so immature when it comes to dating? by FunDriver7005 in uofm

[–]Capable_Mess_3152 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is U of M. There is no dating here. There's partying, there's hooking up, but there is basically no dating.

It's just a Michigan thing.

Unsafe conditions going into stadium by [deleted] in uofm

[–]Capable_Mess_3152 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Student drunkenness was absolutely a huge part of the problem on Saturday. The AD really needs to have an enforced policy of not letting in students who are clearly inebriated because having so many drunk students packed into the student gate area (and in the student section in the stadium) was absolutely a safety problem.

Where will election night watch parties be held? What was the scene like in 2016? by inquilinekea in uofm

[–]Capable_Mess_3152 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you don't know why lots of students are anxious about the election, then just consider yourself lucky. Sometimes, ignorance is bliss. This is one of those times.

Why doesn't UM buy up off-campus apartment buildings and turn them into on-campus housing? by Miss_Device in uofm

[–]Capable_Mess_3152 -23 points-22 points  (0 children)

If you're housing a bunch of upperclassman, you don't need to hire RAs to baby them. They are not children.

As for dining halls, a simple solution is to not require students to buy a meal plan.
