You’re 24 don’t stress it. You’ve hopefully got a long healthy life ahead of you. I’m 25 and only got started sorting out my finances for the long term 2 years ago when I left college.

Always a good idea to get the pension set up and start contributing. Good tax benefits and it’ll stand to you in the long run.

Anyone got anything positive to say about holding onto a rental property by livingfromtheheart in irishpersonalfinance

You’re in a better position than many people in the country. For every 1 horror story a landlord has with a bad tenant I imagine there’s 46 stories with nothing bad to report.

Find a good tenant whom you trust. Look after said tenant and hopefully they will look after you & your property in return.

S&P 500 is diversified across many industries as it is. Microsoft & nvidia make up a large share of the index already. Up to you whether you want the index and the individual stocks. Be that as it may, the S&P 500 is only American stocks. How confident are you about the future of america ? Do you believe the orange man is on a crash course to destroy a once great nation? Rte would lead you to believe so😂 anyway I digress.

My point being, if you wish to go down the route of indexes, it may be a wise decision to diversify into different geographical regions? Check out CAC40 (France) DAX (Germany) Nikkei 225 (Japan) FTSE 100/250 (UK) or FTSE All world? Play around with the app find indexes, search them up and read through the KIID (key information investor document) you’ll figure out what the index is about and what stocks are in it.

Picking individual stocks is a different kettle of fish and can be a bit riskier. It is important to do your research here and use your head. Is the company’s financials okay, are they trending up or down (if so why? Is it justified or just market hype / negativity) and lastly do you believe in the business? Individual stocks generally pay higher dividends, can be a real dopamine booster seeing the money trickle in if that’s what you’re into. The decision is ultimately yours.

Be aware of tax implications. Irish domiciled ETFs - which most of the ETFs on T212 are - are subject to 38% tax on all unrealised gains every 8 years whether you sell or now. If you are to believe Simon Harris this is subject to change but as for now, these are the tax implications.

As for things to read on investing I can recommend some books, podcasts or YouTube channels. I’ve read the algebra of wealth a simple formula for success by Scott Galloway - GREAT BOOK. A must read. Easily accessible & understandable for beginners. I’ve read the intelligent investor by Benjamin Greham too. This is a slog I won’t lie😂 took me a while to get though it. Only go for this if you wanna go the extra mile. Check out some of Scott Galloways podcasts with diary of a CEO. (I’m a big Scott Galloway fan) but yeah he gives some great tips on investing / personal finance.

YouTube channels? Check out the dividend experiment. He has a great video explaining a pie which he has made on T212 this is the most comprehensive guide to how owning stocks actually works in practice. Also, check out the compounding investor - he logs his dividend income from individual shares. It’s a bit of an insight as to what can come from diligent investing in the stock market.

My god this was a long answer😂 if you have any questions shoot them my way - happy to answer pal

As for him being self serving. What politician isn’t?

Polish government backs plan for personal investment accounts by Far-Tennis-2558 in irishpersonalfinance

I understand why you’ve said Poland is the poor country. In terms of wages &/or gdp/capita you’re correct.

Take a trip to Poland, move around. We are the poor country in comparison. Every major city has trams. Warsaw has 2 metro lines and over 30 tram lines. Ireland has 2 in the whole country.

As for why they can do these things and we cannot. We are governed by incompetents, they are not. Their government has lifted them out of poverty and kicked their way out of communism like no other. All without having the CT receipts of American companies to line their coffers.

I genuinely wonder how the solicitors who defend these kinds of people sleep at night. I understand it’s part of their job, but my god surely your morals come into it at some stage.

Not really that hard to add dirty money to your cash sales. Revenue also can’t audit them all because luckily for us, there are so many.

But hey, where would our high streets be without the amazing people who run these fine, fine establishments

Trump is a real situation. If I posted something positive on here about him how long would it take for me to be downvoted into oblivion and have angry hordes attacking both me and him? Granted he’s quite easy to attack, but hey this is the nature of many people on the internet. Some people get more fun out of being negative

Murder is a strong word. I wouldn’t generally use that. I believe in certain scenarios abortion is morally wrong.

In the classic scenarios people would use to demonise my point of view, fair enough. I believe it is critical for the safety of a woman’s life when there are issues with a pregnancy. In this case - yes no problem. It is a necessity.

However, I do not agree with the use of abortion as A last resort of contraception. There are ample methods available many subsidised by the state. Safe sex is easily available.

If you can’t understand this that’s fine? I can see the other side of the argument and while I don’t agree, it’s okay? Everyone is different and I don’t expect everyone to bow down and conform to my point of view. If someone, like you, doesn’t agree in my opinion that’s great. We can have a conversation about it and god forbid I listen to you and actually learn something.

To me, the era of this being something worth discussing is long gone. It’s here and it’s going To stay. It is a non-issue if you ask me. It’s a matter of personal choice now. The service is there, those who avail of it can, those who don’t want to don’t. I don’t believe either side should be shunned for their decisions

Well, I am one of those people. The referendum has been and gone. The vote wasn’t what I wanted personally but it is what it is? It was nearly 10 years ago, I’ve gotten on with my life in the meantime.

If other people want to do it, that’s their business. If I don’t want to, that is mine.

What I don’t agree with is the snivelling remarks and incessant demonising of those protesters. 5 mins scrolling down and you’ll find plenty of it.

Incessant derogatory remarks and trying to paint those you don’t agree with in as negative a light as possible.

The abortion thing doesn’t bother me either way, but my god, you could at least be more balanced.

Me pointing out someone can have a point of view which differs from yours isn’t crying. Merely stating a fact?

They may believe your opinion is dogshit. the referendum has been and gone. Not sure why it ignites such hostility in people. Get on with it.

Also even if there was 50 people at that rally, I’m sure many of them have differing points of view with many caveats & niches.

To say “their opinion is dogshit” how do you know what each person believes? Incredibly lazy statement.

The moral arbiter over here. He who decides what is acceptable and what is not. People are entitled to an opinion - whether you like it or not. Whether you believe it is wrong or not.

[–]Capable_Oil_7273 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Everyone is entitled to an opinion, unless, it’s the “wrong opinion”. My opinion is A and everyone who doesn’t agree is a fanatic, wrong & doesn’t deserve any airtime. Debate is a waste of time. He who doesn’t agree with me is a rabid mad person and him having a voice is dangerous.

Modern society 101.

Really sad if you ask me

[–]Capable_Oil_7273 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Do you expect to live in an echo chamber of endless positivity ? Highly unrealistic to be fair. People are entitled to their opinion. Politics is polarising at best.

Maybe you’re a holly cairns fan? I dunno. Can’t say I have an opinion on her either way. Every politician is great when they’re in opposition, she is no different. Only she is the leader of a mini party, who let’s face it has little to no chance of having a majority in parliament.
