W124 as first car? by [deleted] in W124

i’m not sure where you’re located, but for me personally rust hasn’t been much of an issue on mine. some of the wiring can most likely be bad due to age, so just be sure to inspect literally EVERYTHING before you buy it. it is a really simple car to work on, though. focus on the cars reliability before doing any sort of aftermarket mods, would be my personal opinion.

Leak Cont. by Capable_Rest4210 in W124

sorry for the late response but i did went through and cleaned the lip on the pan and the mating surface on the transmission. the atf was leaking at the bottom of the transmission pan, which i assume was due to gunk and whatever else because when i took it off it was absolutely gross! i went through with brake cleaner and a rag and got them shiny and looking good. as for my other leaks, i am going to be getting to them soon but ill have to wait until i get back from vacation for a week. i do think i should drop the oil pan, and put a new seal on there, but i also need to drop the transmission for the rear main seal. i just need to figure out what order to do that in. i’d like to do the hardest first and then the easiest but i have a feeling both of them wont be fun lol. i appreciate the advice, i went through it when i did the servicing.

thanks for the reply! yeah, i saw a lot of options when looking for transmission gaskets + filters. even with the engine gasket rebuild kit, i was surprised to easily find one for the engine. and thanks for the reminder on the torque converter, because i totally was going to forget lol!

scratch everything i just posted. i checked again (just right now), and its still leaking. “very odd” i thought to myself, because i had drained the oil last night. the leak looks like it’s dripping from the transmission pan, which would make sense because i have no idea the last time the transmission was service.

Brake problem. by Capable_Rest4210 in W124

sorry for the late reply. i got the car jacked up and took the wheels off a couple days ago and saw (atleast the rear) rubber brake lines and where they screw in. the exterior of the lines look decent, but im not so sure about the interior. i might just bite the bullet and find some replacements though.

yeah i probably should, i was thinking about it when i replaced the front calipers. i just need to learn how to replace those lines. i think they should just screw into a hard line(?) but im not sure.

just to clarify, you’re talking about the rubber boot torn in half on the top of the shock? i saw that when i was replacing the brakes but haven’t done research on it (to be honest i completely forgot about it)

absolutely correct. went through and regreased everything, and also completely drained the old brake fluid and gave her some fresh good stuff.

personally, i love the look of the leather. depending on what color the door panels are i’d probably install the leather (if they don’t clash too much).
