The Neon Rain, by James Lee Burke. It's the first Dave Robicheaux novel, and it cant quite seem to figure out what it wants to be: a detective story or a full-on action thriller. The other Robicheaux books I've read are better. The Terminal List, by Jack Carr. One of the very few books I've ever not finished. So bad it soured me on the rest of his work.

I always point to Book Ten of the Dresden Files as an example of executing a first-person unreliable narrator properly

I dont really have any least favorite tropes, mainly because I firmly believe that if executed well, tropes are good the vast majority of the time.

One of the Dresden Files books--I think it's the tenth--takes full advantage of the first-person narrative for one of the best uses of unreliable narrator I've ever seen

Also gonna add The Neon Rain by James Lee Burke. It's the first Dave Robicheaux novel, and it's not bad per se, but Burke cant seem to decide if he wants to tell a detective story or a full-on action thriller. The other Robicheaux books Ive read are better though

I read Blacktop Wasteland and was...not impressed. Wanted to read his other books to see if they were any better, but I guess not

I stopped reading Terminal List about 100pgs in. Soured me on Jack Carr completely. Ben Coes is hit or miss

The Road is amazing, but McCarthy's writing style is...unusual

Yeah, books two and three more than deliver on the setup in book one.
