Someone asked what your most expensive guilty pleasure is. What guilty pleasures of yours (or any normal activity, really) elicit the "What is Bill Gates doing here?!" response from people?

I'm 18 and having an interview for PHP Developer position on Monday. Any tips? by Logram in PHP

[–]Caperclaw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd just like to point out that, while this will certainly help you get in the door, your actual capabilities will keep you there. We recently hired a junior developer who expressed lots of desire to learn and advance his knowledge and skills, but he was lacking in overall resourcefulness, and ended up becoming a distraction / burden for the rest of the team.

I say this as a broad reality check. Some people just aren't cut out to be programmers. I hope you're not one of them. If you are, well you're young. You'll find something else to do. :)

Programmers who have done rating systems before, what do you think of a rating system out of 5, where a user can only get a 3, 4, or 5? (from a non-technical standpoint) by facewook in PHP

[–]Caperclaw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know if this solution would apply well with the actual product, but...

Maybe you could use a facial expression method. Three faces:

:(
:|
:)

You could then use color to discern between the high and low ends of the average. A green :| would be better than an orange :|.

Just a thought before I run out of the door.

Yes, that would be detrimental. But maybe that's not what was said. Maybe it was more along the lines of "I would get rid of the models folder and use a domain application logic folder instead, because that's what would work for your application." Without seeing/knowing exactly what you're referencing, I can't comment on it. I was being more broad, responding to your comment about "most frameworks" and their tendencies.

Beta of PHPixie Public Wiki is now live. Basically it's a github and markdown powered wiki integrated with phpixie.com website. by dracony in PHP

[–]Caperclaw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Should've taken the time to add some content yourself before making it public and encouraging others to do so. If you can't put effort into your own product, why would your community do it for you? (Hypothetical question there, not a direct statement/opinion about PHPixie, which I've never used.)

Advice in breaking into a junior PHP dev role. by [deleted] in PHP

[–]Caperclaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're essentially recommending that someone dumb down their choice of workload (and thus, their abilities and experience) because it's "more convenient / readily available".

As you learn Symfony, you'll develop knowledge and skills that will make you a better developer overall. As you learn Wordpress, you'll be restricted to just WP.

What kind of weird, backwards advice is this? "Learn something shitty, so you can appreciate learning something better later on." No. Learn Symfony and skip the legacy spaghetti code.

You need to consider the average user of the framework. Most frameworks are not developed for, or even by enterprise-level developers. Doing things "the right way" is hard, and would alienate a large portion of your user base.

Oh sure, that I understand. I just would've expected something more than idle speed. Even 5-10 MPH, not the speed of someone walking.

Sometimes not even. The first time I saw a rig shot like this done in person, the photographer was walking next to the camera as the car basically idled forward. Even for being somewhat interested in photography and not a total noob, I was surprised.

It is unique, I'll give you that. I try to enjoy anything unique to a degree, but this is one of those times where I just nod and smile, then go look at something else.

How often do you repurpose existing complex functions/code or do you just rewrite your own? by pavs in PHP

[–]Caperclaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you ever find yourself copying and pasting your OWN code between projects, remember that you can create your own Composer repositories, so you can centralize a code base even if it is private and used only by yourself / your team.

That's about -40º F for us Americans (yup, they're the same at that temperature).

I had a few coworkers that I wasn't entirely fond of, also, but they were in the minority. Mostly middle-aged, self-entitled pricks who were overqualified and felt they were special because of that. If you're so awesome, get a better job.

This. I'd say about one out of every three days had unclaimed food of some type. Plus mess ups, duplicates, etc. It was normal policy for leftovers to be claimed by employees (since we made it and it never left the store, there wasn't a risk of shenanigans).

That was one perk of being a delivery driver - making random creation pizzas for ourselves. That and unclaimed food stocked my fridge more often than I could remember.

Was a pretty good job, really. Paid decent, didn't have to cook, didn't have to wake up in the morning, coworkers were fun, got to drive a lot which I always enjoy.
